To all of the NEGATIVE comments, he said you can decide which is your favorite. He did not say.."which one sounds best". You should pay attention before criticizing. I appreciate that he took his time to do this video.
These types of videos are always fun and thanks for sharing. I loved both kits, however a real comparison can't be had when the heads are different and Moongels and internal mufflers are used.
Apples and oranges, a 3 ply Getsch with clear heads vs a different generation Ludwig 6 ply with coated heads and tons of Moon Gel..why bother comparing them?
The most ridiculously pretentious, and stupid comment I've read on youtube in at least 2 months, is Joe Cap's "Apples and oranges..." comment. Just another dipshit fooling himself and perhaps 30 other clones into believing that he knows something. The gentleman who created this video gives anyone who wants it, the opportunity to listen to and see a couple of beautiful drum sets. All of you non-thinkers pretending to be wise because you point out that Moon Gel has been employed on the Ludwig drum set heads, WISH that you could create recordings with sounds as good as Ari gets. But, you can't. So... you troll... and you type. Fack... what the hell what Gretsch THINKING? They put internal mufflers on the drums Ari is playing? MORONS! The could've avoided drilling so many holes in the shells if they had thought ahead to the days of Moon Gel!!! Ugh! Pff... GREAT VIDS, Ari Ilaskivi. Thank you for sharing :). That's what any comment should be stating.
Hello guys, Moongel was used because some heads were ringing too much despite tuning (used heads were troublesome to tune). As little moongel was used as possible.
Thank you for sharing the video of your beautiful drum sets. Great job! That Gretsch floor tom is joyous to hear! OMG... the Gretsch bass drum too!!!!!! Wow
To my ears the Ludwig kit elements sounded more distinct as individual instruments, the Gretsch kit sounded more like a homogeneous collection. The heads and muffling play a little into this equation. I think that the bearing edges and shell type factor into thus too. Cool video thanks for sharing
Should run coated on both kits. That gretsch is wide open and that Ludwig is held back a bit. Hell of a good tuning job on both kits though and great chops.
While there are two many variables at play here to make this comparison anything other than ridiculous, I absolutely love the sound of this particular Ludwig kit. It sounds glorious!
Both kits sounds fantastic, just like I want them to. Gretschnut remarks about different heads and moongel. In my mind this demonstration shows a potential. I believe that a competent sound engineer can make most kits sound good. And I believe that great drummers can make any desent kit sound good. This is NOT mathematics! And you made those kits sound really good for rock music. Thank you for the really nice video.
Love them both! I think the Gretsch had more attack and resonace but it could have been the clear heads. Would like to have heard them with the same heads
i own a set of 1967 ludiwig blue sparkle deluxe classic set, with metal snare, first time in the studio the engineer said "those ludwigs sound great" still have the set, with original everyting except the cymbals that came with it and the throne, added a rack and a floor tom but did not alter the hardware at all......the hi hat cymbals are paiste that came with the set
both great kits , you would not be disappointed with either . I play Gretsch myself so I am a little biased in their favour but both great sounding drums .
Personally, nothing beats the sound of that Ludwig snare. Just wow! The Ludwig toms are also good but I thought the kick was too diffuse. Maybe tuning or mic placement but I loved the Gretsch kick more. I want a definitive beater strike and a solid resonance that doesn't linger too long. The Gretsch kick was the cat's meow IMO. The Gretsch snare on the other hand rings like the Liberty bell and needs dampening to my taste. Once tamed it may be a lot tighter sound and closer to the Ludwig but still in 2nd place to my ears. Fun comparison guys, I'd be happy to take either kit home. Cheers!
I had that Ludwig and sold it like a moron.. I now own a late 70's, 6 ply maple Big Beat in Black Cortex. It's in absolute beast.. This video is great and thanks for posting !
I own a Ludwig Legacy kit. Love it. This Gretsch sounds fantastic too. It is almost like saying do you like a Gibson Les Paul vs. a Fender Stratocaster. Ideally get both if you can afford it. If I had to choose I would still probably roll with Ludwig by a small margin only because I am used to the Ludwig sound.
Two beautiful classics! I'm currently a Gretsch guy (although I have owned both brands at different times and love them both), but in this comparison the Ludwig sounds a lot better in my opinion. However, if the heads and tuning are not exactly the same then we're kind of comparing apples to oranges.
Very different sounding kits. The Gretsch snare drum sounds insane, while the Ludwig toms and kick sound unbelievable!! I think the Gretsch kit would sound better with coated heads to warm them up a bit.
I like the Ludwigs mainly cos of the coated Ambassadors though! :) Thanks for the review- very very cool! But I thought the Gretsch bass drum sounded a little punchier.
Out of context, the Ludwig Oyster Black is superb, but I believe the Gretsch Gold Sparkle would fix immediately on a rock mix. Just like Charlie Watts knew it. Would Ludwig match that? Maybe.
I couldn't tell, was there a hole in the front head of the Ludwig bass drum? Both kits sounded really nice. The Ludwig kit sounded like Ian Paice's Ludwig drums from Deep Purple.
The Ludwig bass drum sounded rounder and fuller and the Gretsch bass drum sounded a little choked yet oddly enough the Gretsch toms rung out more compared to the Ludwig toms but as stated by other comments that could be all to do with the heads and the moon gel and not the shells.
This has been answered several times already... Some heads were ringing way too much without dampening (because of old heads and/or not so perfect tuning). Moongels did _not_ kill the sound but actually made it better. Owner of the kits could not afford to buy new heads for the comparison but he wanted to make the comparison anyway.
Great classic rock sound. If you've still got the kits, how about a head-to-head in a more jazz tuning? (Yes, I know 13/16/22 is considered rock fare these days. But tell Messrs Krupa, Rich and Morello that)
Ari Ilaskivi - Beautiful thanks for letting me know! Check out my channel and enjoy some snares etc. Love both your kits! Keep grooving! Thanks again for letting me know the specs on your kits. All the best, DC
Moongels just damped some ringing which was a bit disturbing. They did not kill the sound. Owner of the kits had not replaced heads for a while and the drummer had some problems to tune them properly for the test. Next time no Moongel, though.
To all of the NEGATIVE comments, he said you can decide which is your favorite. He did not say.."which one sounds best". You should pay attention before criticizing. I appreciate that he took his time to do this video.
Amen, Brother Richard. Amen, and thank you :)
Yup 100%
The kick on the Ludwig kit sounds glorious! Great video 👍🏻
Hard to compare with different heads.
I agree! True drum comparisons always have matching heads. Unless you want new drums.
These types of videos are always fun and thanks for sharing. I loved both kits, however a real comparison can't be had when the heads are different and Moongels and internal mufflers are used.
Moongels did not affect the sound much - it dampened ringing just a little bit. The heads did not sound any better without moongel pieces.
Pulu Studio
Then why put them on 😖
Ludwig all the way!!
The Gretsch kit sound amazing, but the Ludwigs sound beyond amazing. Great tuning and mic'ing too.
I'm a Gretsch man but wow those Luddy's sound damn good, nice drumming as well !!
My uncle has those same Ludwig’s. Owned them since 1977. They’re amazing.
I still play my 1973 Oyster Blue set every day.
Apples and oranges, a 3 ply Getsch with clear heads vs a different generation Ludwig 6 ply with coated heads and tons of Moon Gel..why bother comparing them?
to hhear the sound difference of course... any kit should be compared before you buy the kit for you.
100% fact

I agree @With Joe on this matter of FACT!

New drum video coming soon - review of rare Camco drums!
Should run coated on both kits. That gretsch is wide open and that Ludwig is held back a bit. Hell of a good tuning job on both kits though and great chops.

Incredible sounding drums. BOTH earning their spot with a 1st. place trophy.
🤘🏻❤🏆 🥁🏆🥁❤🤘🏻
The smile on Ari’s face lifted my spirits that’s love what tone and tempo
Ludwig snare, gretsch toms
That my friends, is a good mixing job.
That great Gretsch sound! 🥁🤘😁👍🥁
Yep!

Great Drum comparison. Appreciate this.
Cool comparison video man! Both were great. Ludwig suits me fine. 😇❤️😉
Love them both! I think the Gretsch had more attack and resonace but it could have been the clear heads. Would like to have heard them with the same heads
It's probably due to the amount of moon gel he used on the ludwig
Thats true too!!!
Both kits sound great!

I love the sound of the Gretsch! They have such good tone
Man that ludwig kit sounds good!

very nice video and drumming
great recording!
Hi ! Love the Ludwig 22" Kick - what is the depth of that drum? thank you!
I had that Ludwig and sold it like a moron.. I now own a late 70's, 6 ply maple Big Beat in Black Cortex. It's in absolute beast.. This video is great and thanks for posting !
I am a Rogers guy myself, but IMO nothing sounds better in the studio then a late 60s, early 70s Ludwig (3 ply, maple/poplar/maple).
both sounded fantastic, what size and model of K constantinople is the ride?
Different heads and different dampening makes it apples to oranges but with the way you have them; Ludwig!
LUDWIGS ALL THE WAY
I own a Ludwig Legacy kit.
Angelvox1 Apart from the mismatching heads and dampening this could be a fair comparison.
Two beautiful classics! I'm currently a Gretsch guy (although I have owned both brands at different times and love them both), but in this comparison the Ludwig sounds a lot better in my opinion. However, if the heads and tuning are not exactly the same then we're kind of comparing apples to oranges.
Is there something wrong with comparing an apple to an orange, or an orange with and apple?
Very different sounding kits. The Gretsch snare drum sounds insane, while the Ludwig toms and kick sound unbelievable!! I think the Gretsch kit would sound better with coated heads to warm them up a bit.
I like the Ludwigs mainly cos of the coated Ambassadors though! :) Thanks for the review- very very cool! But I thought the Gretsch bass drum sounded a little punchier.
Both great. Thanks.
Great drumming! both brands
Out of context, the Ludwig Oyster Black is superb, but I believe the Gretsch Gold Sparkle would fix immediately on a rock mix. Just like Charlie Watts knew it. Would Ludwig match that? Maybe.
How did the Ludwigs get such low end? Is it the tuning? I have never heard such beefy low end on another kit. It's awesome!
Tuning. That's all it is with those heads....
Ari Ilaskivi hole
Ludwig, for mine, although neither snare over impressed me.
He should have used a Ludwig Supra.
I couldn't tell, was there a hole in the front head of the Ludwig bass drum? Both kits sounded really nice. The Ludwig kit sounded like Ian Paice's Ludwig drums from Deep Purple.
There's no hole in the front head of the Ludwig bass drum.
Are you using vintage cymbals too? BTW I like the Gretch kit.
Really nice. Does the The Ludwig kit have Granitone interior? :)
Can't remember anymore
..
All depends on what you're asked to play for..Yup both great. Now for the |obvious| joke response.."Beats me!" Thanks for your work here Ari..
Gretsch but the deep bass drum on Ludwig is sick.
LUDWIG....especially the snare
Not exactly an accurate comparison considering the Ludwig had coated heads on the Tom’s with gel pieces around the corners of the toms.
are the cymbals from the K Constantinople series? is the ride cymbal the 22'' overhammered ?
I don't remember exactly but hi-hat is K Consantinopole. Leftmost cymbal (seen from audience) is K dark series.
Listening on a pair of NS 10's Ludwig has a lot of more low end. But the 2 has a beautiful sound!
That Ludwig Kick is lucious to my hip hop ears.
Nice sir ! could you give us the exact reference of this Gretsch snare please ? Is it G-5000 ? Thanks !
It's a Gretsch 6,5"x14" G5000 Single Ply Solid Walnut Shell with Dunnett throw-off
@@ariilaskivi9551 Thanks
The Ludwig bass drum sounded rounder and fuller and the Gretsch bass drum sounded a little choked yet oddly enough the Gretsch toms rung out more compared to the Ludwig toms but as stated by other comments that could be all to do with the heads and the moon gel and not the shells.
Thats what you get from a ported kick.
what head are you using for the kick drum on the Ludwigs? those drums are singing :)
Hi, can you list all the mics you guys used? Thanks so much!
Check end of the video, there it is!
both sound great - also love those hats
What heads did you use on the Ludwig kit? Is there any muffling inside the bass drum?
None.
Beautiful kits. Why so much moon gel on the Lugwigs?
This has been answered several times already... Some heads were ringing way too much without dampening (because of old heads and/or not so perfect tuning). Moongels did _not_ kill the sound but actually made it better. Owner of the kits could not afford to buy new heads for the comparison but he wanted to make the comparison anyway.
Tuned pretty sweet!
Great classic rock sound. If you've still got the kits, how about a head-to-head in a more jazz tuning?
(Yes, I know 13/16/22 is considered rock fare these days. But tell Messrs Krupa, Rich and Morello that)
Hi, these are great!! My question about the Ludwig drums: are these 3 ply shells or 6 ply shells?
Both sound fantastic. I might lean slightly to Ludwig, hard to say.
Like the Gretsch a little more open warm and punchy, although the Ludwigs were also great!
I love the sound of both! Also, your cymbals are great too! What cymbals are you using?
Add a quick glance toward the end it look like Zildjian Constantinoples
I'll take the Ludwigs but love both. They just smack more it seems.
Wow - both of them are awesome! What hi hats are those specifically? Great sounding drums! All the best, DC
Top is Zildjian Constantinople, bottom is K.
Ari Ilaskivi - Nice! Thanks for letting me know. Love those kits! All the best, DC
Ari Ilaskivi - what heads top and bottom do you have on Gretsch?
Clear Remo Ambassadors on toms (both sides), Ambassador coated on bass drum.
Ari Ilaskivi - Beautiful thanks for letting me know! Check out my channel and enjoy some snares etc. Love both your kits! Keep grooving! Thanks again for letting me know the specs on your kits. All the best, DC
Gretsch for jazz, Ludwig for rock. Both great.
I'd be very happy with either kit, but if I had to pick one, I'd take the Gretsch...
Love the Gretsch snare!!
Different heads, different sound
Should have put the same heads on each kit
That great Gretsch sound!
Prefer the Ludwig kit in this comparison. However, I did not care for the rack toms in either kit.
NICE ..I LIKE THE CYMBALS!
Me too! Wondering what models?
Kinda hard to tell the difference between the two sets to me. Both sets, heads are to loose.
Nice
Gretsch with ludwig snare
That last fill was so sick!! 😷 🏥 ☠️ 😉
Ludwig.. in a different class.
Based on video only , LUDWIG ALL DAY
Gretsch for me they just always sound livelier and rounder then any ohter brand.
Gretsch snare drum needs some tuning.thay both sound great.in my opinion
pair the ludwig kick with the gretsch toms and you're in business.
The heads are going to make more of a difference then the drum manufacturer.
Gretch kit but not the snare
Even with all that kidputtie on the Ludwig heads.. they won this easily IMO.
Ludwig Forever
Don't you have a name?
2:00 just imagine seeing this on a Marvel movie. The camera man just moving real close behind Captain America🤣
Love your drumming btw
different heads and ya had 3 moongels on the floor tom! let those babies sing!!
Moongels just damped some ringing which was a bit disturbing. They did not kill the sound. Owner of the kits had not replaced heads for a while and the drummer had some problems to tune them properly for the test. Next time no Moongel, though.
Big G
Luddy every day.
Ludwig...
Muffling shouldn’t be used for these comparisons, to get a true sound.
Better tuning required.
