Taste Of Traditional South Moravian Culture

  • In this video I am in South Moravia (Rakvice) which is a place known for its wine production. There will be a big annual traditional celebration which dates back many years which is called Hody, people will be dressed up in a Kroj which is a traditional outfit and each village has a different colour costume. People will be marching through the village singing and dancing. A band will be playing traditional music called Dechovka. The main organizer and arranger of Hody is a selected young boy called první stárek (the first stárek - literally the first "old one"). He and a group of young friends (somewhere they are called stáreks - Czech plural: stárci; or they can be called chasa) are responsible for the organization and smooth running of the event. Each stárek (or member of chasa) also has a girl partner, usually called starka or stárka. The boys and girls wears a traditional folk costume, which differs widely from region to region. At the beginning of Hody, a mayor of the village or town should pass symbolically the rule over to the first stárek.

      Even though I am a Silesian, this makes my heart warm too :D But I am from Ostrava which is one of the bigger city here, and I must say I am sad that we don't have such a rich traditions here at northeast. Nice video again keep goin André we love you (I could write in czech but I want to practice english a bit :D)

      @@reimusscz884 You perhaps would have if history after 1945 turned bit different. Anyhow you really don't have any real "havířské" traditions? Some old from 19th century and so, to my knowledge those people who went down below ground had some and their own subculture. But I

    • @reimusscz884
      @reimusscz884 3 роки тому

      @@MrToradragon Of course we have our "havířské tradice", but one comment here is too short to describe it all. As mining declines here these traditions disapearing quickly. For example dialect called "po našimu" is dissapearing too (I think it was mix of czech/polish/Silesian lang. Ussualy only elders used it here). Luckily I experienced a time when my grandparents spoke it, and because of that I can speak fluent Polish now. Nowadays in my opinion traditions aren't really big thing here, there are still somethink called "havířské slavnosti" which is few day festival of czech pop/rock bands. Or pálení čarodějnic/ srpnová noc... But it's only about drinking and listening new music in civil clothing so not huge a tradition for me. By the way my grandpa was a "havíř" which I am proud of because it was extremly hard job. Here near Ostrava it's city next to the other city (Karviná, Havířov, Orlová, Ostrava, Bohumín, etc...) so there are not much lonely villages remaining. Everything is so urbanised. And this is a fact people here are not as satisfied and happy like somewhere else and it can be seen on them. For example I was in Brno and few villages near a week ago and whole atmosphere is different, people are more relaxed, everything is slower then here, more smiles on faces, and everyone looks after himself. But here are some random events for example "výročí osvobození Ostravy" and it was pretty nice to see. It was a reconstruction of the fighting for Ostrava during the Second World War. There was 200+ soilders, tanks, even historical airplanes in air, shots. Amazing atmoshpere.

      Im South Moravian from nearby where this video is taken at. Why we shouldn't be nice to him?? We love when there are foreign people and WE LOVE to show them, share, invite them. Especially when we see they want to know what we are doing and don't know the traditions. Food, drinks, taking them to dance and try, letting them take pictures with us, offering them to join a dinner at someone's house even when we don't know them much where they will be with bunch of people in traditional folclore dress. Then family serving them all the food, wines, slivovice, cakes 😅 Also to get to know where they are from. I did this so many times when we were celebrating and other friends from town would too.

    I was always curious where all those Moravian traditions came from, beause it looks very different than traditions in Bohemia or in other Slavic countries. Moravian traditional cloth is very overdecoraded and I would say it's kitsch, no offense, I am just saying what I see. On other hand, traditions in most of Bohemia or for example in Poland look much more simple and even clothing is more simple and practical than in Moravia. I heard that traditions has something to do with some Romanian or Hungarian immigrants or something like that, it looks completely foreign for someone from other corner of Czech Republic. :-)
    I think it's pretty sad that most of people speak only about Moravian traditions and you can find nothing about west or south bohemian traditions.
    If you want to see how traditional clothing, architecture or langauge look like in southern bohemia, the best way is watch "Princezna ze mlejna" fairytale. :-)

      Romanians and Hungarians in South Moravia? To my knowledge Hungarians moved to Slovakia. Some parts of Slovakia are pretty much still Hungarian. Maybe you've mistaken South Moravia with South Slovakia. I don't think there are any Hungarians or Romanians. South Moravia was historically and culturally very much connected to Austria. I know about some Croatians who moved to South Moravia during the Habsburg Monarchy era, but they also moved to Austria. Some villages in Austria and South Moravia are inhabited by Croatians, but they are fully assimilated.

      @@tomassiegl512 There is some history about why region is called Valašsko which is similar to name of region in Romania, but some sources are saying this is just a myth. If it's myth, I am still curious why Moravian traditional cloths look so alien to me.

      @@Pidalin In the case of Valašsko it is possible. I've also heard about that story, but it is only a small part of Moravia. I don't know the answer. I only know that the Moravian countryside (small villages) was predominantly Czech speaking. While cities and towns in Moravia had a German speaking majority. For example the dialect of the Czech language in Brno (brněnský hantec) has so many German words (or originally German) because Brno (Brünn) used to be a German speaking city, but the villages around it were Czech speaking. Southern Moravia and Olomouc region had connections with Austria. Northern Moravia and Silesia were German speaking. Only Valašsko and some villages close to the border had some connections with Slovakia I think.

      You can read this for some basic history insight:
      lucsim.estranky.cz/clanky/historie.html
      The Reason kroje are so much decorated is beacuse they were supposed to show off wealth, as much as possible. But the overall history of them Is vast, rich and differs from village to village as the way they looked was evolving a lot.
      This Is just a short version, beacuse there is so much more to this tradition than meets the eye, and like mentioned, details do vary from village to village.

      There is simply nothing like a "moravian traditional cloth", each village/region has completely different style of it. The decorations show the historical wealth of the village, therefore if you are to travel to historically less wealthy region, the traditional costume would be much, much simpler.
