I definitely come from the cavalier side of things. I saw what I wanted the tree to be, and I tried to make the tree into that immediately. I wanted perfect bonsai today. I'd take a pine, bare root it, put it in a shallow pot with 1/1/1, cut all the whorls off, pinch every candle ... needless to say I ended up with a lot of trees that are still several years behind where they could have been. Getting more trees did help - specifically, having trees at different stages of development. But I still have to be very intentional and constantly tell myself to take a step back. I like to say that bonsai isn't teaching me patience so much as bonsai is teaching me the cost of impatience.
Wonderful advice! I am just getting into bonsai. Stratifying a bunch of seeds and buying a bunch of seedlings. Minimum 10-20 trees for each species for a total of around 300 to start. It'll give me lots to experiment with and keep me from getting bored...

I think the solution to both problems is just buying more trees. I find it hard to only have one tree. If I have 20 I don’t focus all my attention on one and over work it

@@smithysbonsai1479 thanks for the response I ordered some from them and some from Amazon they all arrived in good health. The pines from bonsaify are definitely great starter material. The ones I received have some neat movements. I was just impatient and have two tiny seedlings I planted last year and wanted to get more 🙃

I second the concept of having extra trees. And for those who have too many?
Learning from books and teachers builds a foundation. Mastering requires doing.
The exception may be tenured professors.
BTW are you working on red or black spruce? Bill W seems to make a significant difference between Picea jezoensis and Picea Glehnii. The later being the preferred red at least by Japanese bonsai Cx.
The spruce buds are also edible aling with the potential consumption of cambial scrapings and seed stew. Perhaps a jellied Azo Pruce bud with Osetra as an amuse-bouche?
I bought a batch of P. Glehnii from Bill two years ago. The ones I repotted are slowly dying. The few I did not repot seem to be liking their environment.
I’m glad to know spruce like San Francisco and they just don’t like the way I treat them.

These are black - I have some red Ezo I got from Bill two years ago. They seem to do okay at the farm, better in the greenhouse. But they're susceptible to needle blight so it seems less than ideal locally. I assume you're joking about the edible part?

Where would be a good source for Ezo Spruce? I am interested, but have not seen them anywhere.
Unfortunately they're hard to come by. We're starting another batch but it'll take a few years to get to sale size.
