Transcribed Messages from Citizens supporting the Sit-in Protests at Myeongdong Cathedral, Record No. 00902878
The message of citizens supporting the sit-in at Myeongdong Cathedral (Record No. 00902878) was made by Yi Dae-Keun, a reporter at the time, in June 1987.
At the time of the Sit-in Protest of Myeongdong Cathedral in June 1987, a table was set up in front of the cathedral to collect money and valuables to continue the protest. And there was a large piece of paper named 'Citizen's Wall'.
"Reproaching myself for my lack of courage, I support your actions."
"I came to Seoul to support you. I wish you good health.
"For the democracy of the country, I give you great support."
"These things are not sent out of sympathy. Dear sisters and brothers, we wish to meet you with a smile when your desperate desires come true."
Yi transcribed messages from citizens supporting protests for two days, on June 13 and 14 into a journalist's notebook. Below is the part where the donator recalls the time.
“The spirit of the times, such as overthrowing dictatorship and democratization, shared its value not only to protesters and activists but also to ordinary citizens, and even to middle and high school students. I couldn't help but transcribe the messages. I thought it could be a historical record because it vividly captured the thoughts and feelings of the general people of the time. Also, I was so touched by their hopes and wishes"
This archive is not about patriotic martyrs for democracy or activists, but It is a record that contains the will of citizens who have supported them and contemplated the times together.
Through this archive, we can confirm that the June 10 Democratic Uprising was a history made by the participation and action of many citizens.
