  • In the early 1920's to the 1940's, Terminal Island California housed a vibrant community of nearly 3,000 Japanese and Japanese-American residents. It had grown out of a small Japanese fishing village whose settlers helped launch a booming industry for canned tuna. World War II would bring and end to this community.

I grew up on the island from1959 to 1971. While poking around in the area of the Japanese community I found the home plate of baseball field still embedded in the dirt where it had been since the school was torn down. I dug it up and took it to Reservation Point and installed it into the grass where the kids of the prison employees played ball. I didn't understand the significance at that time. I wonder if it is still there. I should be in a museum.
