I grew up on the island from1959 to 1971. While poking around in the area of the Japanese community I found the home plate of baseball field still embedded in the dirt where it had been since the school was torn down. I dug it up and took it to Reservation Point and installed it into the grass where the kids of the prison employees played ball. I didn't understand the significance at that time. I wonder if it is still there. I should be in a museum.

I loved fishing tuna. As a 5th gen tuna fisherman I was blessed to work the ocean. I hope and pray for all the fishermen and women to be safe and make it home each trip, and I pray for the family's and the ones that do not. Thank you for feeding the world❤💯

I made my first trip on Clipper in 1957. Coming home with a full load we got nailed by cat. 3 Hurricane 4 days south of San Diego. Quite a adventure for kid right out high school. You might think that would be my first and last trip fishing, nope, I retired when i was in my mid fifties.

I was born in December 1949. I went to High School at San Pedro High. I drove a 1956 Chevy Bel-Air and a 1950 Lincoln to school at 16 in 1966. Beautiful town and good memories except trouble with gangs. At 17, I moved to Gardena. Pretty girls.

Funny story. I worked on the Eileen M for a little over 2 years. In around mid 1973 Were tied up at right angle to the Star of India. The Eileen M assistant Engineer, Henry, looked just like Charles Bronson. The skiff was in the water and Henry was working on it. Some tourists were walking by, another crew member and myself said "hey look, its Charles Bronson, the tourists started waving at Henry taking pictures and saying hey Mr Bronsen, hi Mr Bronsen. We thought it to be very funny.

These were good paying blue collar jobs. Back in 1993, I was 19 years old, making $16.00 hr. On some days, we would unload frozen tuna from containers, pushing racks with skipjack tuna into the pressure tubes. After a few weeks, I got moved up working the weight scale while the ships were being unloaded into metal bins, then driven to the scale to get weighted out. The owner of the vessel or someone from their crew would sit and write notes on how much was unloaded and total weight. Samples would be taken to the lab. We would compare notes. Then the check $$ was given to the owner, and off they go again.. some vessels were local. But some would leave and wouldn't come back for months at a time. It was an honor and pleasure to work among multiple working class Japanese, Mexican, Afro-American, Italian, Portuguese people 💪🏼 PAN PACIFIC FISH CANNERY

It's really not that good anymore. I've been here since 1980, and ever since George W. Bush destroyed the middle class in the 2000s, the city has never been the same.. in fact it keeps getting worse. Overcrowded, overbuilt, the ghetto areas of the city are now 5x as big as they were in the 80s/90s, and it's really expensive. California has been Ruined.

Right you are, 1972/1973 confirmed by the billboard for the "new" '73 Ford LTD at 5:12. As for so much better, I don't know. It is safer now. Lots more to do around town. Not to mention cleaner nowadayz. But it wasn't as expensive as it is now, also San Diego had some jagged edges back then which gave it some character!
