I totally agree with you! Joey tries to find positives in the low quality dolls made these days. But like you said I find almost nothing positive about these dolls, and the worst part is that you spend all your money without really worth it. I would love to see the 90's dolls come back, beautiful, high quality, great face mold (the current one is awful) and lots of things to do and most of all, clothes and swimwear that COMES OUT and real hair. I think everyone would miss them

The moment I saw these had the molded swim suits I hated it. I hated that even as a child. I wanted to change my dolls clothes and play with her hair. but those are the parts of Barbie that mattel chose to cheapen out on. The birthday, holiday and the collectible barbies are the only ones left I feel are worth any money. Meanwhile when I was a kid in the 90's and 00s they had amazing regular play dolls. The hair was so thick and long in the 90's oh my gosh. I mainly buy 90's barbies now.
Swimsuit mold will be okay for the barbie's new dreamhouse... because there is a swimming pool. And don't be fooled the 90s are not available. And though I hate 90s barbie... now its okay mostly 2018 update

I work in a toy section in a store and packaging like this (tube shape, can't see what you are buying) is also such a nightmare to display! During christmas time if there are these weird tubes and rainbow High dolls next to each other I don't blame anyone for choosing rh.

I think Mattel really missed an opportunity with these dolls. I think with the metallic color for the reveal, it would be super cool to have a futuristic or even alien themed doll! When the color washes off in the water it almost looks alien like. Kind of reminds me of a pod you would see in a space movie. It would be epic to have a color revel alien Barbie with neon (rooted) hair and some space age clothes!
We would like it, but parents are so conservative now, I don't think they'd want "unexpected" results like that. If it's enough to weird-out or puzzle some little kid, it would make the parent irate. And it would make Barbie's image appear to be "off-model," something Mattel expressly avoids. A big company like Mattel is very unlikely to do something truly innovative with their flagship property. It's just too risky and expensive. The over-reaches or miscalculations they made in the past like "Growing up Skipper," "pregnant Midge," "Earring Fun Ken," etc., bother them more than you think. Parents want a predictable toy, not a creative one, with Barbie.
They discontinued the Silkstones, so I don't know where the glamor is going to come from. How many more big gowns and big hairstyles can they keep designing around the Mackie face? It's played out. I frankly think the glamor thing is done. Millennials aren't into big gowns, and we fading Boomers and now Gen-Xers have less and less discretionary income...
There are codes on the top so you can avoid getting duplicates and yes I hate molded on clothing and the wigs are awful!! Even kids want real clothes not molded on!
I bought one to form my own opinion and I agree so much wit every negative thing about these "fashion dolls". The fact I wish more people would bring up though is the fact they can't even sit right, their arms can only swivel and how their heads are hard and can only turn side to side. The wigs were originally a decent idea but the execution is so bad, why couldn't they just give these dolls bangs to hide the "helmet"? Also the sponge shouldn't be considered a "surprise" and should instead give you a full outfit like a separate shirt so you can actually dress the doll and their plastic swimsuit could be an alternate way to play with them, and the color change gimmick would be part of that experience. But alas, when does Mattel nowadays actually try to give back to the longtime fans. All their effort now goes into gifting celebrities OOAK dolls and giving us bad quality rubbish, because thats just how they see us as dumb consumers.
I think you should check out NaNaNa surprise dolls if you haven't already. They're supposed to be surprise but there's actually a symbol in the packaging which allows you to not get any duplicates and their quality is amazing!

Another problem with all these mystery toys is the amount of soft plastic waste. Some have dozens of little bags and endless layers of plastic. None of these toy companies are considering the effect that the packaging on these has on the environment... 🙄

The thing is, even if the color reveal element is fun, it's only a one-time thing, then it's done and you can't do it again. The part that you are left with that you get to actually keep (the doll) is terrible so it still doesn't seem worth it even if the color reveal process is fun.
Man it's been a while but I still can't get over how the legs aren't bendable. Even way way cheaper dollar store barbie knock offs had bendable knees back when I was a kid in the 2000s 😭 edit: also I think wigs could be amazing for barbies if done right (like for bjds), it'd add a new level of customizability which I love. but alas it had to be these dolls with badly made wigs that still to this day remain the only modern barbies with wigs.

I hate the wigs. One my daughter got was so misshapen that it couldn't even go ON the doll. And the painted on swimsuits....YUCK!
Click legs have plastic internal structures though? I should know, I've degloved a few Barbie legs haha - apparently Mattel stopped doing them due to plasticiser leakage BUT that takes 1--15 years usually and may not even happen depending on the environment PLUS MGA is still doing it with their dolls so CLEARLY the issue isn't that serious....!
Try the Day-To-Knight color reveal. MUCHHHH Better quality wigs (softer hair and fits the head better). Still got the alien look going on, but definitely an improvement :)
Let me see..... generic faces, molded hair with the option of using a badly fitting wig, painted on clothing, the minimal 5 point articulation, uninspired accessories, and not knowing what particular version of this you are spending your money on making multiples of the same doll a real possibility. Clearly I don't like them either, I have not purchased any nor will I. I have to wonder who is actually buying them. There have been several releases of these color reveal dolls now so somebody must be. I'm not a huge fan of the fairytopia line either, again molded clothes etc but I'll take a Fairytopia doll any day before these.

Isn´t Mattel cheap itself? To me the quality of their products is a point above average. A 5.5 product. They have "quality" in terms of being a well known brand itself but, at the same time, cheap overall to be able to be affordable.

I really hate the look of these dolls they are so cheap and nasty I live in the UK also, £20 for a blind bag doll is ridiculous yeah they look cool when dunked in water but that only last a few minutes and then you are left with a really cheap toy I won't be spending my money on these. Your first doll must of been faulty maybe the paint mixture wasn't right I would return it as she has stuff stuck all over her face and you didn't get the experience of the paint coming off nicely. I hate putting water near my toys so really hate the idea of these.

I'd love to see them do a blind-boxed doll rather than the color reveal. Like they'd give you hints as to what's in it. But they could do a variety of themes with better dolls and have tons of accessories. Plus then they could incorporate different skin tones, genders and body types as well. These color reveals are super weird and disappointing.
I had water revel Disney Princess figures as a kid from Zizzlers and they were super cute and worth the price. Honestly, I feel that dolls should that out of the surprise world and just leave it to figurines.

I think I would have probably liked the dolls when I was little, just because I was so obsessed with wigs and dressing up. As a really young child I wouldn't have minded that the wigs look like helmets, but painted-on tops always bothered me (although I can see why here they perhaps thought the dolls should be covered when they are revealed).

I enjoyed doing these with my 1.5 year old. She loved it. They are also durable for her. I just kept the shoes and sponge from her. So they have their place but were overpriced. However they were fun. She loves them too.
Yeah... I do think such "mystery" toys introduce gambling to kids... but toy companies are able to continue with such toys because there is some law that allows it as long as the buyer is getting a "product" for the money being spent (in actual gambling you can lose money and get nothing in return)

The only color reveal dolls I would even consider getting are the Chelsea dolls with the little clip-in ponytails, but otherwise they looked so awful from the get-go that I would only buy them for the headmold, and then there's not much point in getting them when I can just buy a fashionista and at least have one or two decent (looking) pieces of clothing. If I'm going to have a wig doll, I'll just get a reproduction Fashion Queen Barbie on ebay. I hate the cheapness, the lack of articulation, the lack of fabric, the painted-on/molded-on clothes, and especially the concept of buying a toy that you don't know what it is. Basically, the only reason I buy new dolls is for the headmold/skintone/unique hairstyles and curiosity of the body molds. I really hate that most dolls now have less articulation than the #1 in 1959 - at least she could sit without her legs splaying out.
I have never been tempted with these dolls at all. I would rather spend £20 on anything than them. Although the fashion is at the moment is to bash Mattel for the lack of quality (I am not referring to you by the way) this doll is cheap, whereas past lines such as Monster High and Ever After High were better. Mattel can do it, they just aren't at the moment which is sad.
This is basically the cheapest barbie they could possibly make with the cheapest surprises they could make,: Chelsea-style skirt, bad wig, molded swimsuit, molded hair. I almost considered getting one to see the cool water effect, but now even that's not a guarantee. So disappointing.
The paint on this series is awful as you pointed out, I literally had to scrub it with a good dose of liquid soap... I may got a mermaid when they get into Mexico, but that's it.

I hate the wigs. One my daughter got was so misshapen that it couldn't even go ON the doll. And the painted on swimsuits....YUCK!
Click legs have plastic internal structures though? I should know, I've degloved a few Barbie legs haha - apparently Mattel stopped doing them due to plasticiser leakage BUT that takes 1--15 years usually and may not even happen depending on the environment PLUS MGA is still doing it with their dolls so CLEARLY the issue isn't that serious....!

Try the Day-To-Knight color reveal. MUCHHHH Better quality wigs (softer hair and fits the head better). Still got the alien look going on, but definitely an improvement :)
Let me see..... generic faces, molded hair with the option of using a badly fitting wig, painted on clothing, the minimal 5 point articulation, uninspired accessories, and not knowing what particular version of this you are spending your money on making multiples of the same doll a real possibility. Clearly I don't like them either, I have not purchased any nor will I. I have to wonder who is actually buying them. There have been several releases of these color reveal dolls now so somebody must be. I'm not a huge fan of the fairytopia line either, again molded clothes etc but I'll take a Fairytopia doll any day before these.

i mean if they come with a material t shirt or something they would just get it wet in the color reveal and Mattel probably does not want the dolls to come naked when you first see them

Isn´t Mattel cheap itself? To me the quality of their products is a point above average. A 5.5 product. They have "quality" in terms of being a well known brand itself but, at the same time, cheap overall to be able to be affordable.
I love how honest you are! You could of brought an omg doll for the price of these awful dolls :( . I really hate the look of these dolls they are so cheap and nasty I live in the UK also, £20 for a blind bag doll is ridiculous yeah they look cool when dunked in water but that only last a few minutes and then you are left with a really cheap toy I won't be spending my money on these. Your first doll must of been faulty maybe the paint mixture wasn't right I would return it as she has stuff stuck all over her face and you didn't get the experience of the paint coming off nicely. I hate putting water near my toys so really hate the idea of these.

Just the way the wig sits on the head is not doing it for me. I think if they made them entirely bald like that new one Fashionista doll, then maaaybe the wigs will sit well on their heads

I'd love to see them do a blind-boxed doll rather than the color reveal. Like they'd give you hints as to what's in it. But they could do a variety of themes with better dolls and have tons of accessories. Plus then they could incorporate different skin tones, genders and body types as well.

I had water revel Disney Princess figures as a kid from Zizzlers and they were super cute and worth the price. Honestly, I feel that dolls should that out of the surprise world and just leave it to figurines.

I think I would have probably liked the dolls when I was little, just because I was so obsessed with wigs and dressing up. As a really young child I wouldn't have minded that the wigs look like helmets, but painted-on tops always bothered me (although I can see why here they perhaps thought the dolls should be covered when they are revealed).
I bought my sister one of these dolls she did the colour reveal and was done with it. The doll isn’t worth it.

I enjoyed doing these with my 1.5 year old. She loved it. They are also durable for her. I just kept the shoes and sponge from her. So they have their place but were overpriced. However they were fun. She loves them too.

Yeah... I do think such "mystery" toys introduce gambling to kids... but toy companies are able to continue with such toys because there is some law that allows it as long as the buyer is getting a "product" for the money being spent (in actual gambling you can lose money and get nothing in return)

The only color reveal dolls I would even consider getting are the Chelsea dolls with the little clip-in ponytails, but otherwise they looked so awful from the get-go that I would only buy them for the headmold, and then there's not much point in getting them when I can just buy a fashionista and at least have one or two decent (looking) pieces of clothing. If I'm going to have a wig doll, I'll just get a reproduction Fashion Queen Barbie on ebay. I hate the cheapness, the lack of articulation, the lack of fabric, the painted-on/molded-on clothes, and especially the concept of buying a toy that you don't know what it is. Basically, the only reason I buy new dolls is for the headmold/skintone/unique hairstyles and curiosity of the body molds. I really hate that most dolls now have less articulation than the #1 in 1959 - at least she could sit without her legs splaying out.

I have never been tempted with these dolls at all. I would rather spend £20 on anything than them. Although the fashion is at the moment is to bash Mattel for the lack of quality (I am not referring to you by the way) this doll is cheap, whereas past lines such as Monster High and Ever After High were better. Mattel can do it, they just aren't at the moment which is sad.
This is basically the cheapest barbie they could possibly make with the cheapest surprises they could make,: Chelsea-style skirt, bad wig, molded swimsuit, molded hair. I almost considered getting one to see the cool water effect, but now even that's not a guarantee. So disappointing.

The paint on this series is awful as you pointed out, I literally had to scrub it with a good dose of liquid soap... I may got a mermaid when they get into Mexico, but that's it.
