What he says about meat being less expensive the less processed it is is very true. I usually sneak into the local farm to stuff a couple of live chickens in my backpack and they're literally free!
I enlisted in the Marine Corps as an open contract (I'm obviously not as smart as I like to think that I am) and they made me a cook. Not the MOS I wanted, but it's served me well over the years. Every man should have some knowledge about how to cook basic food; it's basic competence. There are many things in life that I enjoy, but I hold that there are few pleasures in life greater than cooking for people that you love.
Killing civilians is hungry work!
Oorah devil dog cook!
Hey, without you every Marine would die of starvation, so good job
@@6393dude Not true. Crayons are available at most major retail outlets, ready to eat.
Yeah cooking is a basic life skill everyone should have, but it’s also very enjoyable, delicious, and absolutely essential if you want to be healthy.
I used to follow this channel when you posted "10kcal a day" videos, and ate like Mark Rippetoe's chubbier son. Seeing you replace mayo in a sandwich with hummus feels surreal.
Love this channel.
Kinda miss Chubbier Alan dude had the wackiest sense of humor back then at times lol
Do you mean 10k kcal?
@@Madchris8828yeah he does seem just, more heavy and serious. Nothing wrong with that but I do miss the fluffy throwing Tupperware into bathtubs constantly shitting Alan 😂
"Hyiip Drive, milk, And InNOut Burger 5x5s"
weve all come a long way!
Most important part about cooking that is overlooked in the fitness community is how to season their food. If people would just learn about herbs, flavors, how to bring out flavors in herbs, and what spices go together, you will always enjoy your food if you then cook it properly. Doesn't matter how good the filling of the pie is if you have a shitty crust.
what seasoning should I put on my chicken🦍
@@sergiochacon2492cum
@@sergiochacon2492Depends on what you like, but for quick, easy, and foolproof, cannot go wrong with salt, pepper, and garlic powder
curry, cumin, peprice is a good combination. Oregano/thyme and red pepper is good. You can chop up green leaf veggies you like and smear it on the chicken.
@@sergiochacon2492I like a mix of salt, pepper, paprika, cayenne, garlic powder, oregano, and msg.
Those who have been around since the early days of the channel remember this background music fondly. Good times cooking with Alan
Alan Thrall still giving useful advice after all these years. You are truly a gift to our community
Alan is the kind of chef I want to be when I grow up. (Note: I am older than Alan.)
How am I supposed to remember to train untamed if you don't remind me?
Boneless skinless breast is $2.79/lbs here. Holy fook. Props for making it happen either way.
try living in CA lol, it’s at least 2x that
we should make a chicken farm together 🐣
@@byRoyalty no thanks lmao
Dude, I live in CA, and I pay $3.29 at a non-big box grocery store (SaveMart) for chicken breast or boneless thighs. Maybe he's going to Whole Foods or something.
@@TirepatchKing that’s crazy, in colorado (good 30 mins south of Denver) breast is easily 8+
You can make soup out of the bones as well lots of leftover meat bits on there. Another reason to buy the whole bird. Some lentil soups etc are very nutricious.
Chicken stock too
Chicken stock is great
or broth, and use it when cooking the couscous.
protip for potatoes: boil them first and then, just before they start falling apart, you take them out, season them with olive oil and put them under the broiler. Crispiest potatoes you'll ever have
They will get even crispier if you boil them with a bit of baking soda and shake them furiously after draining the boiling water
they'll get even crispier if you boil them with baking soda, shake all of the water off and get them dry, then use a blow torch@@nomongosinthaworld
they'll get even crispier if you do all of that and then fry them@@TancooMedia
Thanks, Adam!
Even crispier if you par boil then air dry in fridge for many hours before roasting
I bought a pair of kitchen scissors for cutting the spine out of whole chickens to flatten them, it cut the cook time down from ~2 hours to an hour so it was a worthwhile investment. I throw the spines in the freezer for future chicken stocks so little goes to waste.
1:50 You can estimate it at approximately 60% yield, so probably $3-4/lb. I know this because I used to buy whole chickens, albet rotisseries, though when you crunched the numbers $/lb it was cheaper than raw chicken breast or thighs. People get way overcharged for a small amount of convenience
One summer I broke up every whole
chicken I bought and weighed skinless/boneless breast, whole legs, wings. Breast ~1/3 of weight, legs were a little less, wings just under 10% and carcass and skin roughly a third.
Don’t forget to use the carcass for stock and/or for dog food.
You can usually buy chicken necks or backbones at a grocer for 50 cents a pound, but it feels good to use the whole bird.@@aghoover
Nobody’s gonna mention the “cooking song” made his comeback?!?!
Great video!
One recommendation. A slow cooker.
A big slab of the cheapest cut of beef, some fat, and spices. Add some potatoes or veggies if desired. Eight hours later you have a meal, and leftovers. Literally the simplest meal you can make.
I also recommend this^ super convenient, tastes good. Cheaper too
Gonna also recommend a slow cooker, or if you have an Instant Pot or some kind of other pressure cooker, those can make similar meals in a fraction of the time. But I love throwing some chicken thighs into a pot with some canned tomatoes, chipotle peppers, cumin, salt, pepper, onion and garlic, and you have delicious, tender braised chicken that you can make burritos or tacos out of for days. Stuff just falls apart immediately and keeps for days in the fridge.
Tagine inspiration for slow cookers. Beef, prune & squash or lamb, date & sweet potato... , add garam, cumin, s&p, canned tomatoes with optional garlic, ginger, paprika, cinnamon, corriander. Serve with Greek yogurt & rice/cous cous. Beautiful, healthy and freezes really well.
and always remember: cook untaimed!
Learning how to cook is very important to me as Iconsidered a fundamental thing that will carry all your life and it doesnt have to be complicated as Alan show it!
These recipes look great! I appreciate you taking the time to make this video.
Cooking since university. Best investment of time I have done in my life. Great tips and meals!
Good PSA. Also, invest in a meat thermometer, one that can go in the oven. Perfect chicken every time.
With the greatest of respect to your roast potatoes, I'd encourage you to look at how we make them in the UK to take your roast potatoes to a completely different dimension
Ooh man I respect the UK so much for selling goose fat in jars at the grocery store. That stuff is amazing on spuds.
Alan my good man, I was just thinking about your channel and then you come through with fresh content. I have always enjoyed your cooking stuff.
It's easier than ever to cook at home. UA-cam has so many informative and concise videos on easy to cook meals. People are just lazy AF and it shows. I hate going over to a friends place and finding they only have beer and bbq sauce in the fridge
i am changing my diet. more vegetables old guy lol. that chickpea idea is awesome. thanks for the Untamed kitchen video.
You should do more of this cooking/recipe content! This gives so much inspiration for just cooking better food 😂
If you shop at Trader Joe's, I think their sourdough bread is really good. Best bread I've had in the US except for when going to Dutch or German bakeries.
I learned how to cook when I first moved out of house for college, at 18 years old. My mom did teach me a few things before that, but I got pretty independent in terms of cooking after moving out. It has been the single most useful skill I have learned aside from my formal education and training. Nowadays I can cook for myself and for others, in a way that is at the very least appetizing, if not delicious, for everyone who eats it. It's also a good social currency, as people would like you more if they like your cooking. The only trade-off here is the preparation and cooking time, but it is a worthy trade-off if you want healthy, cheap and delicious food. Why compromise on life fuel?
PS: Chicken skins are good if you know the chicken comes from a good source and if you don't exceed your macros too much with the skin. I always kept it on because it's extra protein, and useful if you want to be economical with your food and not waste a thing.
Yes! I'm in an ad, but I liked the videos already. I know this is going to be a banger and that I will need this. Thanks for all of the videos!
Great, easy to understand cooking video, for beginner cooks as well as those of us who have been cooking for years and still don't know what we're doing. I absolutely love the way that u explain or teach the details of cooking in such a down to earth, let's keep it real sort of way! Thank you! :)
The old school music from your old food videos, you've come along way Alan! ❤
Dude i love that you still use the same music in the background you used so many years ago in older cooking videos.
That glass bowl you use for your garbanzo mix is a great design. Having it almost square is efficient use of refrigerator space. Having the corners rounded makes it easy to stir and to clean. Very good.
I love the music playing in the background. Always reminds me of Alan's cooking videos
The best video Alan has done on meal prep is the 10’000 calorie diet. It’s brilliant plus has lots of hilarious comments mixed in.
Thank you very much for sharing this kind of content! Looking forward to my next meal prep day now.
Thanks for showing us how to cook dad 😇
For people who have some money: A Zojirushi rice cooker keeps rice perfectly fresh for a while. Fucking bomb
"it's time to be an adult" he said with mall swords mounted on the wall 🤘
Okay I'm not the only one who noticed that 😂
those look like trophies from strongman comps brah
4:45 you're 100% correct, in fact if you look at the FDA they say something like if its 155 for a couple of minutes its equivalent to 165. same goes for 145 but for an even longer temp
Honestly I pull my chicken at 145. It will rise at least 5 degrees after coming out, and the very interior of the breast is pretty unlikely to have any contamination anyhow.
Learning how to cook is game changing making delicious healthy meals makes everything so much better
Great video Alan! Very relaxing.
More cooking videos! I seriously use almost all of your old cooking videos.
Was thrilled to hear the classic Alan thrall train untamed food prep song going
We eat similarly in my household. Thanks for the ideas, we could use some new menu items over here! Great video
The music. It's the music man. Thanks for the video.
Cheers Alan, your videos are very helpful. Keep doing, all the best!
Stay heavy
I love your cooking videos alan
Thank you for this, this is the real “secret” besides lift consistently
The consistency with the music cracks me up
I learned to cook as a kid and almost became a chef. Fresh ingredients, spices and simplicity are the best way to make healthy meal prep food. I love bbq as well to grill 5-6lbs of chicken or steak and use in salads and soups during the week.
Alan, this video motivated me to try cooking a whole chicken for the first time today. I'm a 30 year old man. To be honest this seemed like the kind of thing I would never have time or energy to learn but you made it simple. It came out great.
Really appreciate what you do here.
"A little olive oil" *dumps entire bottle*
"A little more olive oil" *gets out a barrel*
"Just a bit more olive oil" *tanker truck backs into kitchen*
😂😂
This is golden. This is the type of stuff that should go viral
I do a similar thing with larger potatoes. I cut them in two, maximizing the surface area of the cut. I put them cut side down in a covered cast iron skillet on the stove, on low-medium heat. It works well for sweet potatoes too. Over-chopping vegetables can let out a lot of the flavor and probably some of the nutrition. When I boil a cabbage in broth I leave it whole. When it's cut just as it's served hot, the juices ooze to the cut edge and onto the eater's tongue. It's a great principle to use when it fits.
Learning basic fundamental cooking skills is so important not just in life but also for health and fitness.
Knowing how to put together healthy meals that are tasty, in a cost affective way is so so important
Great video, thanks
Totally agree!
Alan Thrall I love you this video is exactly what I needed. If I visit sac soon I will check out untamed strength. Best wishes.
This is what natural body building is all about
I swear Alan is the best fitness chef on youtube😂
Certainly the most realistic, no-nonsense and relatable one! 💯
If i had a penny for every dessert that just gets protein powder mixed in trying to pass out as a recipe I'd had my own brand of protein powder
You could also buy a whole cooked chicken which is more often than not the cheapest option and then make wraps, sandwiches, salads, stir-fried meals, etc.
dear lord, I just got back to the channel. you've gotten super lean, and without the beard you were unrecognizable for a good minute. glad to see you're still around and being cool though. keep it up!
Its funny because I’ve been cooking since I was 16. My parents cooked probably once a week on average. Now 22, I’m very good at it and know exactly how to get what I want every time. Definitely one of my most useful cemented habits.
The last cooking video you did made such an impact on my cooking. That Kikkoman's Teriyaki sauce is a GAME CHANGER! And I love doing chicken thighs over breasts now. You've changed me, influencer cooking strong man :)
Quinoa is also a great alternative for rice. Decent amount of protein, plenty of fibre.
And if you have noticed the olive oil prices double or triple in your local stores like I have, it's good to remember that if you fry things or cook them in high heat, the aroma of the oil completely disappears so it doesn't matter which oil you use - can use the cheapest like canola if you want to and it doesn't affect the experience. The health claims of different oils are still up in the air and questionable, all of them are likely better than using only animal fat instead. For fresh things like salad dressing olive oil is still the king (if you like the taste that is). For example when frying meat or cooking broccoli in the oven I use whatever is cheap, but when I fry eggs, they're on the pan so little time that the oil stil has a taste. Even more if you decide to brown your bread buns, it seeps in rather than loses taste and buns with canola taste horrible.
The nice thing about fibrous veggies, carrots and whatnot, is that not only do they support the healthy microbiome in gut, the same process happens in your mouth. It gives food for the preferred bacteria, contrary to how high sugar low fibre foods fuel the less desired bacteria. So you should also improve your mouth health with such a little think as snacking carrots.
Very nice and helpful video, @AlanThrall! I think it would be great if you could get a playlist of meal prep videos. Like "Cook Untamed" :)
this feels like it was directed towards your kids in the future, and posted publicly so we all could benefit
Just tried that sandwich recipe today.....delicious. I had never thought to use hummus in place of mayo. Absolute 🔥
Thankfully, I already know how to cook but this is a great video!
Untamed Flavor!
Tip: Scrub your cutting board with the non-sharp side of knife and this way you can keep the blade sharper for longer. Also you don't ruin your board
TRAIN UNTAMED!!
Also, would you please update with the recipe for Turkey Enchiladas? Thanks man!! Great video
Great video, love the recommendation to buy whole chickens, AND the advice to pull the meat at 150. Only thing I'd change is to spatchcock the whole bird so it cooks faster/more evenly.
Alternative option for your potatoes.
Cut them into slightly smaller chunks, toss in oil and seasoning the same way, then air-fry for 20-25mins at 400. They come out crispy and awesome, far more convenient than dealing with a pan to cleanup as well.
Looks good😋😋
One additional point to the whole chicken is that the bones and skin can be used for stock which in turn can be used for cooking other meals, so no need to buy that if it gets used at all.
Hah listening to the background music surely brings back the memories
I been cooking since k was 9, supervised of course.
🎯 timing!
Everyone reading my mind!
Love your new videos that explore the art of healthy cooking and living besides lifting weights. Costco has best deal for a whole roast cooked chicken only $5!! I buy in bulk there too.
Alan is really calling me out like this😂
Cook UNTAMED!
Pro tip for tomatoes: boil ‘em, smash ‘em, stick ‘em in a stew
Bruh that turkey sandwich looked amazing
If I could suggest any equipment: get an instant pot....get you an instant pot and cook 5 lbs of chicken breast in 20 minutes by putting it all in with some stock and seasoning, 60 seconds of "prep"
If you dont want to cook a whole chicken everytime, check out glen and friends video on how to cut up a chicken. Its not too hard once you know how to do it and it makes buying whole chickens way more practical. I haven't bought preportioned chicken for a long time
I just turned 20 and got my own apartment i can only cook slightly diff variations of either steak or chicken but its helped me bulk alot, the real question now is how to cut
I've been cooking since I was a kid so I'm just going to be here for the algorithm
Brother, get a Japanese rice cooker! They can be used for a lot more than rice! Main point is you can keep rice in them, ready to eat for up to 3 days. You can cook chicken breast or canned fish directly in the cooker with the rice. Stir it up and you’ve got meal prep for days. I suggest using short grain rice which you stir up as soon as possible after the rice is cooked.
Hoping for that light jazz background music we got for the old cooking vids 🤞😄
oh my god WE GOT IT
Love your videos man! I would be pissed off I had to eat out of these small plates/bowls, half of the food would be on the floor 😂 but I guess it helps to keep your portion size in check
Also if you have the whole chicken I think getting the broth from it and cooking your cous cous, rice, quinoa in it would also add to the flavour and nutritional value
For the guy's cooking is ae investment.
I work in construction and basically trained my hole life from 4 years old to 34.
swimming gym lifting boxing/wresting/judo/jiu-jitsu/muay thai/rugby/boy scouts/hiking/camping/powerlifting/bodybuilding.
One of the things that took all of that to the next level was learning to cook and understanding basic nutrition and how the body uses food you eat and why.
My sister is a nurse and health nutritionist and has learned and trained in restaurants well she was studying and abroad.
she was a very good athlete in gymnastics body sculpting and cross country skiing .
She was the the one i ask to help me learn how to cook.
My point being is it doesn't make you less of a man to ask how to learn to cook.
IT WILL MAKE YOU MORE OF A MAN ONCE YOU DO LEARN HOW TO COOK.
The bones make good stock. After they're used that way, throw them in the compost. They contribute Calcium and Phosphorus to your soil, contributing to strong root growth.
Is it supposed to take them months to break down or am I doing something wrong?
There's no Italian seasoning here in Italy, isn't it ironic? Thank you for the tips 😊
Do yourself a favor and spatchcock the chicken. It's really easy, cuts cooking time down, and it cooks more evenly.
Alan, any guess on the macros of that couscous dish? Looks good bro
It's been too damn long since we had a "certified classic" Alan Thrall cooking video.
With a few simple techniques anyone can cook some good shyt 💯
