I enlisted in the Marine Corps as an open contract (I'm obviously not as smart as I like to think that I am) and they made me a cook. Not the MOS I wanted, but it's served me well over the years. Every man should have some knowledge about how to cook basic food; it's basic competence. There are many things in life that I enjoy, but I hold that there are few pleasures in life greater than cooking for people that you love.

Most important part about cooking that is overlooked in the fitness community is how to season their food. If people would just learn about herbs, flavors, how to bring out flavors in herbs, and what spices go together, you will always enjoy your food if you then cook it properly. Doesn't matter how good the filling of the pie is if you have a shitty crust.

    Great video!
    One recommendation. A slow cooker.

Gonna also recommend a slow cooker, or if you have an Instant Pot or some kind of other pressure cooker, those can make similar meals in a fraction of the time. But I love throwing some chicken thighs into a pot with some canned tomatoes, chipotle peppers, cumin, salt, pepper, onion and garlic, and you have delicious, tender braised chicken that you can make burritos or tacos out of for days. Stuff just falls apart immediately and keeps for days in the fridge.

I learned how to cook when I first moved out of house for college, at 18 years old. My mom did teach me a few things before that, but I got pretty independent in terms of cooking after moving out. It has been the single most useful skill I have learned aside from my formal education and training. Nowadays I can cook for myself and for others, in a way that is at the very least appetizing, if not delicious, for everyone who eats it. It's also a good social currency, as people would like you more if they like your cooking. The only trade-off here is the preparation and cooking time, but it is a worthy trade-off if you want healthy, cheap and delicious food. Why compromise on life fuel?
PS: Chicken skins are good if you know the chicken comes from a good source and if you don't exceed your macros too much with the skin. I always kept it on because it's extra protein, and useful if you want to be economical with your food and not waste a thing.

I do a similar thing with larger potatoes. I cut them in two, maximizing the surface area of the cut. I put them cut side down in a covered cast iron skillet on the stove, on low-medium heat. It works well for sweet potatoes too. Over-chopping vegetables can let out a lot of the flavor and probably some of the nutrition. When I boil a cabbage in broth I leave it whole. When it's cut just as it's served hot, the juices ooze to the cut edge and onto the eater's tongue. It's a great principle to use when it fits.

Quinoa is also a great alternative for rice. Decent amount of protein, plenty of fibre.
And if you have noticed the olive oil prices double or triple in your local stores like I have, it's good to remember that if you fry things or cook them in high heat, the aroma of the oil completely disappears so it doesn't matter which oil you use - can use the cheapest like canola if you want to and it doesn't affect the experience. The health claims of different oils are still up in the air and questionable, all of them are likely better than using only animal fat instead. For fresh things like salad dressing olive oil is still the king (if you like the taste that is). For example when frying meat or cooking broccoli in the oven I use whatever is cheap, but when I fry eggs, they're on the pan so little time that the oil stil has a taste. Even more if you decide to brown your bread buns, it seeps in rather than loses taste and buns with canola taste horrible.
The nice thing about fibrous veggies, carrots and whatnot, is that not only do they support the healthy microbiome in gut, the same process happens in your mouth. It gives food for the preferred bacteria, contrary to how high sugar low fibre foods fuel the less desired bacteria. So you should also improve your mouth health with such a little think as snacking carrots.

Love your new videos that explore the art of healthy cooking and living besides lifting weights. Costco has best deal for a whole roast cooked chicken only $5!! I buy in bulk there too.

If I could suggest any equipment: get an instant pot....get you an instant pot and cook 5 lbs of chicken breast in 20 minutes by putting it all in with some stock and seasoning, 60 seconds of "prep"

If you dont want to cook a whole chicken everytime, check out glen and friends video on how to cut up a chicken. Its not too hard once you know how to do it and it makes buying whole chickens way more practical. I haven't bought preportioned chicken for a long time

Brother, get a Japanese rice cooker! They can be used for a lot more than rice! Main point is you can keep rice in them, ready to eat for up to 3 days. You can cook chicken breast or canned fish directly in the cooker with the rice. Stir it up and you’ve got meal prep for days. I suggest using short grain rice which you stir up as soon as possible after the rice is cooked.

Love your videos man! I would be pissed off I had to eat out of these small plates/bowls, half of the food would be on the floor 😂 but I guess it helps to keep your portion size in check
Also if you have the whole chicken I think getting the broth from it and cooking your cous cous, rice, quinoa in it would also add to the flavour and nutritional value

For the guy's cooking is ae investment.
I work in construction and basically trained my hole life from 4 years old to 34.
    swimming gym lifting boxing/wresting/judo/jiu-jitsu/muay thai/rugby/boy scouts/hiking/camping/powerlifting/bodybuilding.
One of the things that took all of that to the next level was learning to cook and understanding basic nutrition and how the body uses food you eat and why.
My sister is a nurse and health nutritionist and has learned and trained in restaurants well she was studying and abroad.
she was a very good athlete in gymnastics body sculpting and cross country skiing .
She was the the one i ask to help me learn how to cook.
My point being is it doesn't make you less of a man to ask how to learn to cook.
IT WILL MAKE YOU MORE OF A MAN ONCE YOU DO LEARN HOW TO COOK.

The bones make good stock. After they're used that way, throw them in the compost. They contribute Calcium and Phosphorus to your soil, contributing to strong root growth.

Do yourself a favor and spatchcock the chicken. It's really easy, cuts cooking time down, and it cooks more evenly.
