＜概要＞
池田屋事件は、幕末の元治元年6月5日（1864年7月8日）に京都三条木屋町の旅籠「池田屋」で発生した事件です。この事件では、長州藩、土佐藩、肥後藩などの尊王攘夷派の志士たちが新選組によって襲撃されました。
事件の背景には、幕府に対する反発と尊王攘夷運動の高まりがありました。新選組は、京都守護職の配下として京都の治安維持を任されており、尊王攘夷派の動きを警戒していました。
新選組は、古高俊太郎の自白により、尊王攘夷派が京都で放火計画を企てていることを知り、池田屋での会合を襲撃しました。新選組は池田屋に突入し、激しい戦闘が繰り広げられました。
この戦闘で、少なくとも9名の志士が殺害され、24名が捕縛されました。
池田屋事件は、新選組の名を世に知らしめるきっかけとなり、尊王攘夷派に大きな打撃を与えました。また、この事件を契機に長州藩はさらに過激な行動に出ることとなり、禁門の変（蛤御門の変）へと繋がりました。
【The Ikedani Incident】

The Ikedaya Incident occurred on June 5, 1864 (July 8, 1864) at the end of the Edo period at Ikedaya, an inn in Kyoto's Sanjo Kiyamachi. In this incident, samurai from the Choshu, Tosa, and Higo clans, among others, were attacked by the Shinsengumi, a group of samurai loyal to the Emperor and the expulsion of the barbarians.
The background to the incident was the growing opposition to the Shogunate and the rising movement to exclude the Emperor and the expulsion of the barbarians. The Shinsengumi was charged with maintaining the security of Kyoto under the Kyoto Shogunate, and they were wary of the movements of the zoin-oexclusionist faction.
The Shinsengumi learned from Shuntaro Furutaka's confession that the Honno Exclusionist faction was planning to set fire to Kyoto, and attacked a meeting at Ikedaya. The Shinsengumi stormed into Ikedaya and a fierce battle ensued.
At least nine Shinsengumi were killed and 24 were captured in the battle.
The Ikedaya Incident brought the Shinsengumi to prominence and dealt a major blow to the Honno Exclusionist faction. The incident also prompted the Choshu clan to take even more extreme action, leading to the Hamagurimon Incident (the Hamagurimon Incident).
