I really loved your video so when the arthritis doctor downstairs had all the coolers his meds came in going to the dumpster, I nabbed them. I made several today. I found the painting easier with a small roller, it gets into the crevices. Also, I drew a design from a stencil and burnt it into the Styrofoam with a wood burning tool. They turned out well and I had fun making them. Thanks for sharing!
Oh you are so lucky. I can hardly find any around here anymore. I have two large ones that I have ideas for. That design with the woodburning tool sounds awesome. What a great idea.
Last night I found about 12 of these styrofoam packing containers abandoned at our area's recycling center. Planters, here I come! Thanks for your great instructions. 🙂
VERY NICE JOB... I HAVE SOME FOAM CONTAINERS FROM WORK THAT I AM GOING TO PUT TO USE THIS WEEKEND... THANKS AGAIN FOR A GREAT IDEA! YOURS CAME OUT WONDERFUL!
What a great video; many thanks. I was about to take my box to the landfill and just googled to see if I could recycle it. Now excited to try your technique. And you are a great instructor! Many thanks.
Thank you, thank you!! I was just going to buy new planters for my front yard. Now, I'm going to do this instead!! So much cheaper and more satisfying! Again thank you!!
Thank you! Save your empty peanut butter jars! One for screws, one for pens n markers, one for q-tips, one for snacks, you get the idea... Free, lasts forever, you can see whats inside, and no dust!
Great video! This certainly beats the ceramic-glazed pots that when filled with soil can be very difficult to move. This is a great class project for Mother's Day gifts or end-of-year gifts for students...just plant a few seeds or seedlings and voila! Great idea. One question: Once filled with soil, are these pretty wind-resistant; or would you recommend putting a weight before adding soil? Many thanks!
Thanks and I do believe that these would make great gifts. Once they are planted, they do have some weight to them with the soil and plants. I have not had any problem with them blowing at all.
Great video, I love this idea. I'm using these containers now because I'm renting. I'm just sorry I didn't come across this idea before I started. Thanks so much for sharing.
So glad you liked it. They make nice planters for years and years. I just "freshened" on up with another coat of paint this year before I planted it. Looks great again!
Great way to save money and recycle and have nice planters. Threw away some that would have been ideal but couldn't think of a way to use them... NOW I KNOW. Thanks for sharing.luv idea.❤
Kim, I was just checking out some of your videos and came across this one , you were speaking of latex paint, ok you have me curious I haven't heard of latex paint since the 70's , you can still get it?? If you don't mind may I ask where you get yours please. Thank you so much, God Bless you and yours. Love your videos.
Maybe just using an old "out-dated" term by using latex. Basically a water-based paint. As opposed to an oil-based, although I have used them both on hypertufa. Some companies still use the term latex like in this Lowe's Paint ad. www.lowes.com/pd/Valspar-Stormcoat-Satin-White-Latex-Exterior-Paint-Actual-Net-Contents-128-fl-oz/3342778 Sorry for the confusion.
Thanks for this video. I have often wanted to try the Hypertufa and wondered if it was heavy. This is lighter and I think I like it almost as much. I am from Ohio also. :)
+Lenisa C Thanks for watching. Yes, this planter is even lighter than regular hypertufa containers. I could carry four or five in one hand (unplanted.) And they are easy to make. I am in SW Ohio.
This is a Great idea using these Styrofoam containers !!! Yours turned out so nice. .I can not wait to try and make one for myself....Your first one you made what 2 colors of latex paint did you use?? Looks like a grayish black in the video...LOVE the color....Thanks again for the Video !!
Thanks Jacquelyn. I used a total black on that one. Then when it was almost dry, I sponged a beige/cream color on top of it. I really like that color too!
If you have a hair dryer that puts out a lot of heat, it could work. Give it a try. I know mine can burn my fingers if I keep it pointed at them, so try it on high and see if you get the change to the surface. If so, you are good to go!
Hi Kim, I just found your channel & want to ask you a question. I bought a styrofoam head and want to make a planter out of it. Will cement stick to styrofoam? If not, what would you suggest? Would what you are using in this vid work? Where can I find the recipe for making this stuff? Much thanks.
SilvyaPatricia, I'm growing food in some. The issue with styrofoam is small containers that are overheated, like heating coffee in a styrofoam cup in the microwave. A larger box like these, filled with dirt don't get near hot enough. The dirt and water (from watering your plants) keep the box cool enough to not off gas, even in 100f hot days in summer.
Can you give me the color paint for your older made styrofoam planter? Looks like black and gray? Love love the idea. I can not wait to create one also!! Thank you!!
Ok so it is hot enough. Another question, I’m making a table size planter so I had to cut and make the size I wanted. So now one side doesn’t close up or match up very well and I’d like to get rid of the rough uneven imperfections. Would I be able to use like the scrap foam beads as filler with the heat gun?
I have used just the Styrofoam box indoors and out as storage, etc. They last years and years just like my planters do. Nicks and dents sometimes and these show up on the plain ones more, but they sure make great seedling trays, transport boxes, etc.
+Ahmed Al-Hassan Baako You are putting the note on this video, but I think you mean for the fabric/draped planters. This one: ua-cam.com/video/h9Em0DcGBGc/v-deo.html You can use any fabric you have available, old rags, old sheets, old jeans, just something to soak up the cement mixture. Hope that helps.
Even though I'm religiously using a dust mask, I'm getting sore throats every time I use the hypertufa mixes. Doing it in my basement, but trying to be very careful. Others having this problem?
I am not sure. Maybe you have a particular sensitivity to the cement or perhaps to the peat. Do you use a regular face mask? Perhaps you need a more heavy duty "respirator" or industrial mask.
I have been able to lift and move my containers. Most are smaller, but some larger ones too. Just have to be careful to lift from the bottom since they are more fragile than real hypertufa. I use the paint to give it more of the illusion of "stone" or hypertufa, but they could be left white.
Over the years, I have had mine get slightly eroded and I have touched up with more paint/cement slurry. Most of them you wouldn't really know it unless you compared old and new photos.
You can use acrylic (chemical-based paint), but sometimes it can damage the styrofoam. For instance, I don't use a spray paint in a can. Something in the paint "melts" the styrofoam. A latex (water-based paint) is best and easiest. Experiment on a lid or something and see how yours behaves.
Saw your video a few weeks ago and I've been laughing at it since. At least a good 1.5 mths or so. Needed it on a down day and when I heard Beaukoo, I lost it. Not sure where you're from, but My lil village Morgan City , La is know for saying bookoo. At lesst I say it on a daily and made my own fucking spelling. You're welcome. What a great find! Wishing you more great finds!
I had my husband watch this with me and had him listen closely to the part where Jerry said he was going to take care of the mess!
Yeah, miracles do happen! LOL
Would I be able to use Rust-Oleum 2X Ultra Cover Paint and Primer spray paint for this project?

If you don't like it, let me know what it was you didn't like so that I can improve future videos. OK? Thanks.
You don't have to paint the inside at all if you don't want. I just paint down to soil level for a nice look.
If you don't like it DON'T WATCH IT.Go to something you like maybe porn... IF THAT IS POSSIBLE. I like craft ideas..so there you nasty people

This is awesome. I have a stack of these in my attic that I’ve just been waiting for a project! Can’t wait to try it out
Go for it!
What a fabulous looking pot

So glad you liked it. They make nice planters for years and years. I just "freshened" on up with another coat of paint this year before I planted it. Looks great again!
Nice idea! Does one have to texturize the outer surface (wire brush and application of heat) or could one just go ahead and paint with latex paint?
You do one or the other, or even both. Should be pretty either way.
So these don't fall apart in water at all? I guess they would work pretty good and boy they would be so light to move around, wow
No, not at all. They have held up for years for me in icy winters and hot summers. So very easy to move around.
I wish it worked for me in my area. We have Yellow Jackets that have made many nests by chewing off pieces of styrofoam and adding it to the nest.
Awesome video Kim!
Thanks so much!

Glad to help. These last for years!
@@KimsGardensandHome ❤great, now I will have to make some may see if an Orchid would like it.
Remember, a good crafter NEVER throws anything away! 😃😃😃😃
Great idea! Thanks! I would, however, paint the entire inside. It will slow down the microbes in the soil from deteriorating the exposed styrofoam.
But what would the paint do to the plants?
Styrofoam doesnt deteriorate for like hundreds of years.
Great vid! Is the paint an exterior paint?

Great Video Kim! I will have to try this fun project! Thanks for the ideas and sharing!

How wonderful for an 81 year old to make!

I love it!!! Can I use it to grow food? Or is toxic so is just for ornamental plants? Thanks!
SilvyaPatricia These are fine for food plants as far as I know. I use them for anything.
Thanks!!!! =)

Great! Show us photos on the group on Facebook. It's under The Hypertufa Gardener.
Can you give me the color paint for your older made styrofoam planter? Looks like black and gray? Love love the idea. I can not wait to create one also!! Thank you!!
I think I painted that black, and then lightly sponged with a beige color. It made it seem bluish in some lights.
Great info.
Thanks for watching!
Great instructions. Would an embossing heat gun work?
I think that would work just fine. Heat would be more concentrated ( I think), just keep it moving. Just enough to seal in the puffies.
Ok so it is hot enough. Another question, I’m making a table size planter so I had to cut and make the size I wanted.
