  • Thiruvalathur Temple is a tribute to the mastery of ancient Kerala architecture. It is considered as a perfect example of temple architecture and construction. The outer stone wall may look unfinished, but it had withstood nature’s fury many times. The inner hall has beautiful murals adorning them, depicting scenes from Devi Bhagavatham and Ramayanam. Another attraction is a big Mizhavu (percussion instrument used for Chakyarkoothu and Koodiyattom).
    The temple has two deities - Devi Mahishasura Mardhini and Annapurneswari. The Annapurneswari idol is made of stone and that of Mahishasura Mardini is made from the wood of the jackfruit tree. This temple is located at Kodumbu Village, about 6 km from Palakkad, on the banks of Bharathapuzha (Shokanasini) River.
    The twin Devi temple of "Thiruvalathur" is a very ancient one of its kind in Kerala. It is famous for its grand architectural beauty and sculptural designs. The temple is directly governed by "Thrissur Naduvilamadam Devaswam". According to the legend, it is one of the 108 Durga Temples found by Lord “Parasurama”. It is believed that this temple was built by the Devas within a short period of 14 days. It is a shrine where the powerful Goddess “Mahishasuramardhini” and the quiet and peaceful Goddess “Annapurnneswari” are enshrined together.
    This temple complex is situated in 2 hectares of land. It is protected by huge stone walls all around. There are entrances on all the four sides . The main entrances are in the east and west. There are beautifully designed stone lamps on the walls of the temple, which are lit during the festival time. it is a captivating and dazzling sight which will leave us spell bound . During the festival season, traditional temple art forms are presented in the specially designed stage called “Koothamabalam” inside the temple.There are specially designed water outlet devices to drain the rain water , which are an engineering marvel of ancient times of the temple designed for this purpose is an engineering marvel. The agriculture land under the administrative control of this temple was sufficient to obtain 18,000 bushels (180 quintal) of paddy. The land also could yield enough oil to light all the lamps of the temple. Such a heritage temple is a blessing to our land and a pride to each one of us.
