No, Not boring at all Dr.Kevin Novak. The more I hear you explain the more I learn. You try to explain exactly what will happen in the complete aquarium cycling and many aquarist did not know the full process including me. I did try to search online for the full cycling process but the web return me a report with full of scientific jargon that I did not understand due to not my expertise of field but when you explain I can immediately understand everything you said. Good teacher will create excellent student. Thank you.

However , been getting backlash from hobbiest that they see these videos are getting too boring, too long and does not interest them at all. By the views I'm getting I can see these educational videos do not interest most hobbiest. They just don't care about the science at all. Hobbiest do not care about scientific terminology at all, just as I thought. This information is better off left for the class room than UA-cam videos.

@@anoxicfiltrationplenums I completely agreed your view about the people interest now, Not only this hobby but everything. People only interested the result and did not care about the process, does not matter if the process very terribly wrong people still don't care. But I respect your decision if you think you need to steer your direction from education channel to more people preferable sharing experiences or something. I always 100% support your decision.

Hi Dr Novak, the Jaubert Plenum diagram that shows the Anoxic layer . What does the 1.2 - 4mm number beside the Anoxic layer mean? Gravel size diameter or Gravel thickness?
Does the Jaubert Plenum applies to smaller tank like 20 litres and does it matter significantly if the plenum layer is less than 1 inch?

Hi Dr Novak, very informative video. In conventional bio filters, it's necessary to have an aerator. I'm guessing that there's no need for an aerator in the bcb Anoxic filter system? Or should the aerator be used to supply O2 to the main pond and plants?
    Looking forward to your advice!

Thank you again, Dr. Novak, for another excellent video! What should the height space be, under the UGF plates?
Which is the best UGF, for a plenum? Lee's and Penn Plax both have 2 styles ~ the "Original" is flat, with holes and the "Premium", has long slits , but I don't know their heights ~ then there are HMHF click together panels, which appear to be .6" high. Is there a preferable UGF?
Also are Malaysian Trumpet snails beneficial, to a plenum system, since the burrow through the substrate?

Very interesting. Thank you for your efforts and talent. Just one criticism. Don't make a 45 minute video on a 5 minute concept. There is no need to repeat yourself 7 times. You said it yourself: there's no need repeating the same thing over and over again.

Great video I'm so glad ur putting these videos out if people can't understand what ur telling tell after watching this n I really don't know the more people that watch this n tell others about the way plenem slow moving plenems and bcbs work the better if they find out n still deside not to use the system the its there loss because it is great as for my slow moving plenem it's working but not converting all of the nitrates it is converting most of the but as you said best to have 3/4" layer over plenem I think I need to add more aquasoil I'll just keep tweaking it u till I get it down to zero nitrates I understand everything you told me but I'll be overfeeding overstocked or and need more substrate I'll need to measure the substrate and test for nitrates as its been over a week sense I last tested. Looking forward to ur next vid thanks again

Dear Sir, I am currently brainstorming a double 55 gal drum filter setup for a 700 gal duck pond, two ducks. The goal is to keep the water clean for the ducks to drink and filter out their waste. Can you please recommend how I may best incorporate the BCB design into a barrel filter?
The pond is a round 8' x 2' stock tank. Might I be better off with the baskets in the pond?
Thank you for all the great work!! I also keep fish

Dr Novak, love your enthusiasm to share your knowledge and reviving a long forgotten method. Can you clarify the depth of the substrate? You mention 3-4 inches deep using a plenum. Is that total depth? I think in your example of the antique 20gallon with blood parrots, you seemed to have a max of 3 inches total including plenum and gravel, using the blue under gravel filter. Is 3 inches total including plenum the minimum you would recommend? Would a small layer of sand at the top of gravel be advisable for shallower examples so that the sand can slow down the movement of water and act to compress the oxidation layer?

Thanks for the video this was very informative I want to start a modestly sized reef tank but the weekly water changes have been daunting to me so i've been researching ways of reducing the frequency of this. The deep sand bed with a refugium seems to be the most effectively way to do it to me, however, 4 inches of sand takes a lot of space. Is it possible to run biobricks in a low flow area of the sump to house the anaerobic bacteria? I'd be really interested if you made a video series about implementing one of these systems in a reef tank.

The last four have a plenum and I've converted some. And I have two sumps with BCB baskets. Just the plenum alone would be perfect for fish that don't like flow. Like Bettas. @@anoxicfiltrationplenums Not all hobbiest! I prefer the science. It would be refreshing for the hobby. Wish there was a resource I could go to that has all the research / science behind the anoxic filtration system (as well as all other things about fish keeping and aquariums). Most of us are left to wade through the thousands of "expert" opinions and "facts" on the forums and youtube. Most of it is well intentioned, but anecdotal and unscientific. Do you by chance have links to any of your research?
BTW, I set up my first plenum 2 weeks ago. It was a reset of an existing tank.

( ENDOTHERMIC TO EXOTHERMIC REACTION UNIT )...as the endothermic will attract the positive ions right then discharge as exothermic which is minus not a positive when we talk in relation to fish pond / aquariums hope you can clear that up... for me am I wrong or miss educated.

Okay something a little different here that I find fascinating just over a year ago in UK scientists have convert Plastics bottles into vanilla flavouring using genetically engineered bacteria, the first time a valuable chemical has been brewed from waste plastic.
Upcycling plastic bottles into more lucrative materials could make the recycling process far more attractive and effective. Currently plastics lose about 95% of their value as a material after a single use. Encouraging better collection and use of such waste is key to tackling the global plastic pollution problem.
Researchers have already developed mutant enzymes to break down the polyethylene terephthalate polymer used for drinks bottles into its basic units, terephthalic acid (TA). Scientists have now used bugs to convert TA into vanillin.
Vanillin is used widely in the food and cosmetics industries and is an important bulk chemical used to make pharmaceuticals, cleaning products and herbicides. Global demand is growing and in 2018 was 37,000 tonnes, far exceeding the supply from natural vanilla beans. About 85% of vanillin is currently synthesised from chemicals derived from fossil fuels.
Joanna Sadler, of the University of Edinburgh, who conducted the new work, said: “This is the first example of using a biological system to upcycle plastic waste into a valuable industrial chemical and it has very exciting implications for the circular economy.”
Stephen Wallace, also of the University of Edinburgh, said: “Our work challenges the perception of plastic being a problematic waste and instead demonstrates its use as a new carbon resource from which high value products can be made.”
About 1m plastic bottles are sold every minute around the world and just 14% are recycled. Currently even those bottles that are recycled can only be turned into opaque fibres for clothing or carpets. So we can accomplish this but not denitrification system from manufacturers like fluval, API and seachem in the fish keeping industry using bacteria lol 😆😂🤣😅 what a joke

So what you are saying is your filtration works the same as everything in nature. + and - will always try to equalise. Hot air/cold air. Wet sponge on a dry sponge. Carbon dioxide to oxygen. If the substrate is positive everything wants to move up to balance. Sorry I know what I mean haha
