Uh Oh - Here Comes the Coast Guard!

  • So after a very successful day of fishing, we picked up anchor, errrr, trolling motor, to head home and were almost instantly intercepted by the Coast Guard.
    Now, I know a lot of people hate this kind of stuff, but I got to tell you, I think the fact that you're always under threat of such a safety boarding, and possible ticket, helps ensure boaters have the appropriate safety equipment on board. Moreover, the whole thing took under 9 minutes! These men and women risk their lives daily to ensure boaters' safety so you can include me in the group that does NOT mind these types of checks.
    Apologies for the weird angle on the boarding. In an effort to not "spot burn," the camera was in a mode known as "linear" and aimed down a bit to capture my fishing rod - not ideal for filming people however.

    I chimed in last time you were boarded and am glad to see this time the comments aren't loaded with haters. I had good things to say about the CG then and even more to say this time. A few weeks back I was fishing just outside the Barnegat Light NJ CG station on my Hobie Outback. It was not the best of days weather wise, even the CG boats were hanging close to home while practicing their maneuvers. They took notice of me and kept a sharp eye out for me the whole time I was there. One of them even gave me a thumbs up when I boated a 17+ inch blackfish, not a bad fish for inside the bay. We should be glad to see these guy's.

    Coasties are great, never anything but polite and helpful. My son in law was the CO on a 88' boat out of Newport, R.I.. Alot of boaters don't have their act together like you did John. Great video as usual but I would have loved to seen some fish caught.

    John, the CG is the best! In my younger days was in the CG Aux 43 in NJ for about 10 Years teaching BS&S. I live on the NJ coast and have been on the water since1948 in Babylon, LI. Growing up I worked in marinas. Sadly, there are too many irresponsible, inconsiderate boaters on the water. It's a rare day when I don't I come across someone with total disregard for their wake. And, I still know too many people with expired fire extinguishers, insufficient numbers pfd's in deplorable condition, and outdated Visual Distress Signals. I love boats and fishing but am the first admit that the activity doesn't always attract the best of humanity. I think we need more policing of the waterways with bona fide legal licensing not simply a boating safety before granting the privilege. Unfortunately a lot of public expense, deaths, injuries and property damage result from irresponsible reckless behavior on the water. The only reliable safety we have on the water is provided by the CG.

    Hey John another great video, my son and I where boarded last week by the Coast Guard. We passed with flying colors. The Coast Guard crew was kind and courteous. It only took about 10-15 minutes tops and we are on our way. We're heading out in the next couple of hours hopefully we catch our limit in order to make a large batch of black fish chowder.

    When they showed up, people headed for the hills, so we were an easy target.

    Me and my buddy saw a school of perfect sized albacore jumping in the inlet back in September like something you would see on a show on the discovery channel. Just as me and my friend got rigged and ready to cast we hear coast guard coming to board. 10 mins later after everything checked out we turned around and there wasn’t a living thing to be seen. I watch all the time and one of your most loyal subscribers and no disrespect but this is very disorganized. It should not take longer than a second to get your hands on the fire extinguisher among other things. My marine extinguisher is mounted with the strap and screw that it comes with. I can get to it in 01 seconds to be exact.

    Where as, yes I get it and shame on you if you are not properly prepared to be on the water ( cuz mother nature doesn't care about you). I've been on the same boat and stopped and checked every weekend for 5 weeks in a row. It can be really frustrating when you passed the first time but its a new week and new crew of CG'S and you gotta stop everything for them. Twice we were on a good bite. Then we lost it. I kinda don't really like the coast guard. My friends and I do everything to be sure we are legal and safe. Unfortunately we live in a very high recreational area in the summer and a lot of people abuse their privileges and I do understand their necessity but they have been more of a hindrance than godsend.... Honestly I hope I never need them😁

    • @jiggingjerks
      @jiggingjerks  4 роки тому +1

      steven tomasi did you show them the yellow sheet of paper from last boarding? Usually, if you were boarded same year and have that paper, they leave you alone

    • @SneakyPeteNJ
      @SneakyPeteNJ 4 роки тому +1

      I search them out early in the season. Get checked. Get my yellow copy. Laminate it and have ready for possible additional stops. I don't think you can be boarded twice in 12 months unless they see a reason to do so. Open containers. No visible life ring.

      @@jiggingjerks I’ve found that getting a Coast guard Auxiliary guy to do an inspection when my marina has the Blessing of the Fleet at the beginning of the season and getting the current sticker affixed to the window keeps them off of me. Every year they issue a different color sticker and they can see it from a distance.I haven’t been boarded once in 12 years...
      The guys who boarded you and have in the past have always been very respectful and easy going so it’s not the worst thing in the world as long as your doing the right thing- and you are so- you get bonus footage out of the deal😂
