- Hank finds Cotton in Vegas after Cottan runs away from his pregnant wife.
King of the Hill - S03E05 Next of Shin
Hank tries several different methods to improve his sperm count so he can get Peggy pregnant. The frustration of not being able to have another child becomes worse when Cotton shows up and announces that he got his wife pregnant. But Cotton becomes so nervous at the prospect of having a baby at his age that he flees to Las Vegas, and Hank, Bill and Dale go after him. - Фільми й анімація
"I mean,, you made Bobby, all I made was you!!" such a Cotton line, there is such a sweetness in his harshenss.
probably the nicest thing hes said to him in the entire show
More like a harshness in his sweetness, and hardly any sweetness anyway, but yes.
Never forget how Cotton tried to break Bobby at bootcamp later only for Bobby to prove to everybody that he was, to everyone's surprise, much tougher than his grandfather.
It's great how Bobby is often used in the show to signal that Cotton did have good in him... just not to Hank, Hank's mother, or Peggy, and I honestly can't blame him too much for his disapproval of Peggy.
@@JesuszillaS Cotton deserved better than dying alone in a room with Peggy berating him
Simultaneously complimenting Hank on his parenting while admitting his own failure...in his own way
"well then you've had the fun of trying, boy"
This is actually a good advice in general, not just regarding childmaking.
I just love that he has to explain this to Hank. I’m like dude, go and enjoy your wife and the two of you have a loving and fruitful marriage! God has already blessed you with a child and if He opens your narrow uretey up again then rejoice! If not, rejoice anyway because your marriage is healthy! Come on Hank!
Yep, this is one of my favorite lines in the whole show, and of the moments that always makes me smile
It's what I tell everyone. Forget spending money, just keep trying, that's the fun part :p
He's basically telling him to enjoy banging his wife and probably relax, which is about the closest thing to considerate advice we're going to get out of Cotton.
This. I mean, hey, you don't have to waste money on contraceptives with your wife.
I like how with Cotton they avoid the usual "sappy father-son sitcom moments." Showing he loves Bobby while denigrating Hank is more in character and realistic!
Grandparents will always treat the grandchildren better than their children
@@justnoel4088 Because grandparents can look back on their mistakes. Cotton does, to a certain degree, avoid being mean to Bobby.
I’m your 400th like. What do I win?
@@ShockMe1994 A fun day of you running away from cotton whom has a shotgun.
I love that Cotton wouldn't push the the existence eraser button on Hank. At least not yet ;)
I love how he calls Peggy "Hank's wife" even to Hank
He also calls her "what's her name" at the start of the clip haha
It's because he can't remember her name. That's why.
He knows her name, just refuses to say it, pretty funny lmao
Because she's not worthy enough not even for his looser son
@Melissa0774 It's because he hates Peggy. In the episode where he dies, he told her, "This was supposed to be you" while he was on his deathbed.
“Then you had the fun of tryin boy,” is the best advice Cotton could give Hank. The only reason Peggy got pregnant with Bobby is because Hank relaxed when they got Ladybird.
Actually if I remember right the shows true implication is that Bobby was fathered by Dautrieve.
@@em.1633
This fan theory has always been ridiculous to me lol
@@em.1633 That fan theory has been rebuked time and time again, even by the creators. There are a few things that would make sense, sure, but there are way more things that WOULDN'T make sense.
@@em.1633 That's never been implied. Sounds like a stupid fan theory.
Also a pretty good joke when Cotton kicks himself for not having The Talk with Hank yet
I find it so funny that Cotton's compliments are always followed by his insults.
That's the Boomer way.
Cotton is not a boomer. He can’t be if he fought in WWII. Hank is the boomer.
@@karllykos where do you think boomers got that attitude
What? Boomers got their reputation from being babied by extremely fast economic growth and opportunity in the postwar era. It has nothing to do with how their parents acted.
@@hellboip7876 living an easier life than their war weary fathers/grandfathers lol
I just love how much Cotton loves Bobby
Because he's his father!!! They look exactly the same! No....in all seriousness yea he's a great grandfather
cotton lamenting that he continues to put off having a long overdue father-son talk with hank is the kind of throwaway gag i love
Of all the people in KotH, it's Cotton I still can't figure out. He loves Bobby, but can't even give Hank a compliment without adding an insult somewhere. He has nothing but scorn for Peggy, but will train her to walk again when her legs were weakened. Despite how much he treats women like objects, he actually has affection for Michiko and his Japanese son. The guy is a walking hotbed of contradictions and somehow that makes him the most human.
It’s better to be a softie pretending to be a hater than a hater pretending to be a softie. I hope that makes sense.
That's exactly how I feel with the duality of man being something I talk about quite regularly I'm honestly in agreement that Cotton being so contradictory all the time arguably makes him the most human character of them all
The biggest driving force behind the humor the show underlines so greatly is that the main and recurring characters lack self-awareness within their own forms of confidence, like Hank being the butt of the millennial outlook while being the most structurally sensible out of everyone or Dale's trusting naivete to everyone's blatant deception against him despite being a devoted anarchist.
Cotton, however, is unique because he's LITERALLY the ONLY one who's fully self-aware about how he is as a human being while being the most outlandishly anti-social. I especially appreciate the whole 'I love you' moment during his death scene finally giving an idea of how his line of reasoning works when trying to reciprocate a connection between himself and his son, who failed him by using a false sense love as an easy "get out of jail free" card, making him so much more complex than the other characters. It's why he's my most favorite in the show.
Read between the lines. He actually respects Peggy and loves hank. He never once cursed peggy or hank out. he has cursed out Dede and others. He never once openly tried to break hank and peggy up....He has come in between others relationships many times. He never once admitted they were bad parents. He has called himself a bad parent, he has called them SOFT parents but never bad. HE has never let anyone go after his family. If he wasn't in on the joke no one was allowed to touch them. AND he was about to do 20 years in prison for arson...An Arson he didn't commit...One Bobby did but he was willing to cover for him with.
That’s most people, doing the opposite what’s in your best interest, being selfish and generous, being kind and petty, nothing is binary.
One of the VERY few moments cotton shows endearment to his son
But still in a backhanded way that stays true to his character.
And it's a really good advice for life, everytime you think you may fail before trying, you have to remember the fun in trying
And in the episode when Hank threw a BBQ for the Veterans, Cotton was sweet to Hank at the end
“If it’s a contest on who’s the better daddy, you win! I mean, you made Bobby!! All I made was you.”
“…….thank you?”
greatest backhanded compliment ever
I absolutely loved how Cotton never once even referred to Peggy by her name, always just, _"Hank's wife!"_
Why no one is talking about how great Cotton's perception is when Cotton realized Hank is seeing it as a competition with him 0:11 - 0:41. Cotton had to let him know he's not the one competing and even if there is one, Hank is always going to be the better dad. It makes the ending about him saying he needed to have the talk with him makes even more sense.
Cotton may never show Hank any affection but he does show him some recognition and respect from time to time.
"I mean you've made Bobby and all I made was you" that is such a backhanded compliment 😂
Love how Cotton call’s Peggy “Hank’s wife” even when talking to Hank
This as close to a father-son moment Hank will ever have with Cotton, but at least Cotton finally gave Hank his overdue approval and pride, along with some encouragement and to appreciate any attempt is never a waste of time.
even tho cotton clearly feels some sort of unwarranted disappointment towards hank for not living up to COTTON'S expectations, he's still at least proud of the time and effort hanks put into bobby, to ensure the cycle of terrible parenting doesn't continue
Based pfp
Love how Cotton loves Bobby more than his own son hahaha
cotton calling peggy "hanks wife" is so great :)
Also naming his second son “Good Hank” 😂😂😂
@@JoAndGetFat The best part wasn't just that it happened. The best part is that even after he died, the name stuck!
Cotton: you made Bobby and I loves Bobby
He can't say love about another man because it'll seem gay like how Hank said he loved Buck Strickland because he got promoted and it ruined the entire episode xD?
“Least ya had the fun of trying boy”
You know it’s occurred to me as a realization just now that so many sitcom and cartoon dads absolutely dread what most men are trying to do most of the time: getting laid. Hank is always such a purposeful mood killer with Peggy too it’s crazy they even had bobby.
You can thank the FCC for that.
It's always either the husband is repulsed by his wife in some way (Boomer humor "errgh I hate my wife") or they are both in some kind of tired, worn out relationship where neither really wants to put in the effort.
Then there is Hank. I think he may legitimately be too squeamish and uncomfortable for sex (i know later on episodes slightly contradict this)
With Hank, its that he has trouble expressing his emotions and his sexual desires, and has a crippling fear of failure. Hank is afraid of trying and nothing happening, like in this scene. So its a self-fulfilling prophecy. I don't think that Homer Simpson is like that. Homer generally likes having sex with his wife. Lois Griffin is really kinky, and sometimes an outright rapist. So with Peter Griffin, Lois actually is the problem, at least in some episodes. When Peter is the problem, its the same thing as hank, he doesn't find himself attractive, so his fear of inadequacy becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Cotton REALLY needed more moments like this, the show rested on way to many of his horrible qualities even after his death, so seeing more moments of him being a gruff man with SOME level of humanity more then like 3 or so debatable times in the whole series would have gone alot longer to not making him the most cartoonish element of this very down to earth cartoon.
Nah, i think thats kind of the point.
When you get down to it, everyone is a good person “””deep down””” but that doesn’t really matter if you don’t take strides to show it outwardly in the way you choose to be.
These small glimmers of fleeting humility not only make them stick out more in our minds but draw us to understand him more as a character but just simply.
I think adding more would sully what made fleeting moments like these great and inadvertently play against what makes cotton as a character who he is.
Sometimes the best things come from what was never said at all.
I think showing more of this would sully it. It wouldn’t work cause its just not who cotton is.
@@theradionicrevival8068 Yeah you summed it up perfectly.
@@theradionicrevival8068 I agree. If he acted like this more often, these moments wouldn’t be as impactful nor would they be as revealing. His over the top antics most of the top create them atmosphere for this moments to unveil the real Cotton Hill underneath all of the bravado and exaggerated toughness that he uses to hide what later is shown to be PTSD from the war. He’s a grizzled old man who came back from combat to raise a son the only way he knew how and when that boy didn’t measure up, he crushed him. Hank grew up with high standards but a constant need for fatherly approval which is why he gravitates to Buck. By the time Cotton settles down a bit, he can’t take back what he did to Hank, but he can be kind to Bobby who’s a lot like young Hank would have been if Cotton wasn’t so hard on him.
That was probably the nicest Cotton has ever treated Hank.
I love how, even to hank, he calls Peggy "hanks wife"
This was one of the few moments Cotton acts wholesome to his own son
Semi-wholesome. He does kind of indirectly call him a disappointment, after all.
Cotton May have been tough on Hank but he showed that he really loves his son in his own way.
i never thought it was possible to simultaneously insult and compliment somone at the same time without using sarcasm.
Despite how awful of a person Cotton is at times, he does give good advice once in a while. There is some good to him deep down.
That’s the closest thing to a sentimental moment Cotton can manage. He is proud of Hank but can’t or won’t simply come out and say it; he has to package it in an insult.
"You made bobby! All i made was you!"
EMOTIONAL DAMAGE!
I like the idea that Cotton still has ideas of parenting in the back of his head, but he keeps putting it off. 0:48
Somehow "I'll do it tomorrow" turned into 40 years, but 40 years still feels like yesterday to Cotton.
I love how cotton always loves bobby
"I've got to have that talk with you."
This line really stuck out to me. For some people, "tomorrow" is a magical place where they have the time and desire to fix everything. They spend their whole lives delegating the right choices to some future version of them they think will suddenly come into existence one day. They don't want to do the work now -- they'll just do it sometime. But some things in life have deadlines, whether we like it or not, and now is the only time to do it. I'm not sure if this is the case for cotton -- but I know there's a lot of people whose lives and selves burn around them while they deal with the impact of this pattern.
I don't think this is the sick burn people often think it is, its cotton admitting that he is responsible for a lot of the issues hank has.
Hank at no point seems insulted and cotton reinforces the idea when he says "I gotsto have that talk with you"
This and Cotton taking the blame for the church burning for Bobby are his best moments
I love that Cotton calls Peggy "Hank's wife" even when talking directly to Hank.
Not even “your wife”, gotta be “hank’s wife” as if that’s her name lol
“That’s my grandson Bobby! …and his FATHER” best line from Cotton about his relationship with Hank and Bobby
quite possibly one of Cotton's better father moments.
'You made Bobby. All I made was you'
Hank knows thats the best its going to get, getting a compliment from him 😂
Cotton has his own way to show his "love" for Hank. It may not be the best but this moment here shows that him and Hank can have at least father/son talk
Cotton the king of backhanded compliments
Cotton's logic always cracks me up.
Hank turned out pretty good, and Bobby. . . that could go anywhere. Maybe Cotton is the better father.
Cotton: that kid made being your dad worth it
Lmao what a backhanded compliment. All I made was *you* 😂
It's funny how much Cotton loves Bobby, because Bobby is so much less of a "man's man" than hank.
"Well, You gots ta have the fun of tryn Boi" dam that's wisdom
Cotton reminds me of something my grandpa would tell me
"Nobody is ALL bad"
It’s like he knows he’s a terrible father but doesn’t know how to change so he tries his best
Cottons words of wisdom
I wish they had more conversations like this...
A compliment so genuine with an insult so visceral
I love that cotton likes Bobby, it makes him a much more likeable character in my opinion
When he pieced together going from checkers to quitting having a second child, it jumped over from being a cartoon
It's a very human thing to do, being able to snap from subject to subject. And then the reality of Hank not being able to produce while some people can have 5 or more kids
I'm not a fan of what comes out of Hollywood, but Mike Judge is a real OG
That’s as nice as he can be, take it or leave it.
Clearly father of the year material right here.
You just know he hated to admit it, so he had to go for the burn.
Always got me, Cotton sure does love that boy.
Cotton is sitting in a high chair 😂😂😂😂
I love even when Cotton says something nice to Hank he has to follow it with an insult.
Even if Hank had never had any children he still would've been a better parent than cotton. That old sack of sawdust is deep in the negatives.
Pls post more cotton hill clips
That had to be the nicest thing he has ever said to him.
"I mean, you made Bobby, all I made was you." - Cotton
You made Bobby! I only made you.. "well I guess that's as good as its gonna get.. thanks dad"
My grandpa always talks about how much of a screw up my dad, aunt, and uncles are. But he always praises me, my siblings, and my cousins. I guess it's a grandfather thing, lol
Cotton has a great point. Tons of unprotected sex without having to shell out $100K over 2 decades.
"I gots tah have that talk with yeh" Cotton never told Hank about sex😂
No wonder Hanks so wholesome 😂
There’s no doubt in my mind that Cotton loved Bobby the most! It’s a good thing Cotton never heard the story of what happened at Roosters gambling club.
He's sitting at the bar in a kid's chair. LOL!!!
All I made was you
HA HA 🤣
Cotton master of the backhanded compliment.
Cotton was my favorite character
At least you had the fun in trying. 😏
Cotton loved Bobby :)
This is both a insult and compliment. Well done
He wasn’t lying about it upsetting Bobby too much.
Compliment and insult at the same time 😂
I relate to hank so much because my dad never gave me compliments just criticized me. I’m in my 20s now and it’s gotten better but younger it really screwed me
Cotton cares in his own way
They dropped this entire aspect of Cotton when he was dying, which is a huge shame
This gets me wondering if when new King of the Hill arrives after a time jump, if Peggy and Hank will have had another kid.
And Japanese Hank and Good Hank. 😂😂
Thank goodness he never had that talk with Hank. Yeesh.
Cotton is easily a series antagonist, but he has his sweet moments. Even if most of the time he includes back handed insults.
I really wish peggy disappeared permanently after the skydiving episode lol
0:44
*Junichiro* “I guess I am Joke to you Kotton”
Cotton is a Bad Father, but is a Good Grandpa.
cotton is the best character in king of the hill
Backhanded compliments from shin feet
Thats what i keep saying. Then you keep trying. That's part of the fun. 😜
All I made was U
Whoa, i never (really) heard cotton give hank any kind of compliment. I must have seen lots of episodes that were the only times he was being a dbag lmao
Then you had the fun of tryin boy
He has a high chair
This might be the only interaction between Cotton and Hank where I didn't hate Cotton's guts.
Cotton insulting Hank as he’s complimenting him.
I’m not a fan of Cotton at all, but this was the best way I’ve ever heard to both praise and roast someone.
That boy ain’t right
This is one of my favorite king of the hill scenes. I really feel they did Cotton wrong in his death episode.
