The problem is that we're nowhere near a room-temperature superconductor (and it may or may not even be possible), so we're stuck with ordinary magnetic repulsion, which isn't nearly as stable and awesome. With two regular magnets, you have to perfectly line them up to make 'em float. Superconductors work like magic, as you can see in the video, and you could just have a line of electromagnets as your "track" turned on in very quick succession with no moving parts getting you moving at incredible speeds. I just read a story a few months ago by Greg Egan called "Zero for Conduct" (soon to be collected in _The Best Science Fiction and Fantasy of the Year - Volume 8_) where this Afghani high school girl in Iran develops the first room-temperature superconductor.
It was actually Steve, he literally jumped off his to stop here from crashing, and she just sat there unimpressed, and not even caring or being grateful.
Why does Ellen always seem so bored and unimpressed by Steve? It's like she's trying to do the science daytime version of late night talk show hosts being afraid of animals, except it's not funny. That levitating superconductor "train" is the coolest thing I've seen in a long time, and those chairs look really fun. He made Ellen her very own hovercraft and and just sits there and with a sarcastic "this is ridiculous" expression on her face. It's not like _she_ never acts somewhat odd and/or ridiculous (it's part of why people love her). When you're being shown things that are amazing and genuinely interesting, and the person showing you is excited and super happy about being able to share it with you, the "I'm bored and your antics embarrass me" straight-man act stops being funny. She just comes off as rude.

She definitely doesn't have full control of the entire show. She may have more creative control compared to the industry standard, I don't know, but even if her contract states she can veto any guest, they can make it hard for her to use that power (because it would piss top people off or create a tense working environment). To be clear though, that was just one idea I had for why they would continue to bring Steve on the show. It could be various other reasons.

I think there's actually already some people working on it, but I don't know how long it'll take until it's actually built and working.
Maglev trains are already being built in China and Japan. Not quite up to the speeds he said but they will get there one day.

I was taught about superconductors (suprajohde in my native language) when I was in elementary school.
I have also learned about them in elementary school but it wasn't in that science show that i saw.
