He plays the guitar too and they've asked him an interview why he doesn't play it on stage they said well he always plays a piano because he's never set the piano aside and not been able to find it
@Sarah D Same here. Saw him live in Myrtle Beach decades ago. I specifically remember him joking about his blindness for playing this song. This is one of my favourite songs of his along with "(There's) No Gettin' Over Me", "Any Day Now" and "I Wouldn't Have Missed It For The World."
And that line"somebody here that I can't see" used to make me laugh and I know I shouldn't. Saw him in concert in the 80s what a great voice and performer!
Ronnie Milsap is a legend!!! Smokey Mountain Rain is my favorite. He is featured in Forever Country" artists of then now and forever. Please give it a listen 🎶
Ronnie said he got the inspiration for Smoky Mountain Rain from when he played the piano for Elvis Presley on his song Kentucky Rain back when he was a session player. Ronnie also said he used Knoxville, Tennessee in the song because it's his favorite city.
This guy has so many hits you could spend months on him. "Smokey Mountain Rain" is one of his best known songs as well as "Lost in the Fifties Tonight"
Ronnie Milsap is also a very kind, humble person. Ronnie was born blind and I read one time that his own mother didn’t want him because she believed that God was punishing her so fortunately, when Ronnie was just around a year and a half old his grandparents took him in and raised him to the wonderful man he became. You guys would absolutely love his Lost In The Fifties Tonight because it incorporates so many things that you love into one song. Released in the mid 80s, you get both his soft and soaring voices, infusion of one of the greatest DooWop songs ever, In The Still Of The Night, and for Amber some beautiful saxophone licks that will just melt you. In my opinion, one of the most beautiful songs ever written and it was Ronnie’s 27th number one hit on Billboard’s Country charts. Magnificent song.
You're correct. I did a book report on him in school. Read the biography in the 80's. They have a catalog of songs to get to. My mom and aunt took me with them in the 70's to a concert and I remember him and Charlie Rich. Got dragged to both and loved em ever since.

@@michaellynch9550 I've deleted the comment. His hometown was very small and isolated especially during that time. One of those places everyone knew everyone else. My friend was truly disgusted about Ronnie, because his father was trying to sell his chainsaw that he used to cut wood to keep warm to my friend's father for his medication. His father was very sick. Ronnie didn't even bother to go to his father's funeral or even send flowers. The townspeople were totally disgusted.. Ronnie's career was really booming at the time. There is no indication that his father was a bad man, just very poor. A tiny southern town knows about everyone's business. My friend refused to listen to his music.
Smokey Mountain Rain is his "signature song". Had over 40 #1 Country Songs over his career. Once you start digging deeper, you'll notice his soul, motown influences. I personally love the confident cool "There's No Gettin Over Me".
