    I have a 2000 expedition 5.4, I used the doorman, a year later it started leaking. Took it off and the gaskets were very flat and allowing coolant to seep through, I went to autozone and bought better quality ones.(you might want to replace them preventatively before installation, they were pretty cheap), has been fine for over 2 years now. As for the self tapping screws, I screwed them in first while off the motor, that way when I screwed them later they went in easy and straight. The one problem I did have was that where the fuel rail mounts to the intake, the intake is at a slight inward angle, where the motorcraft one is perfectly vertical, therefore when the rail was tightened it pulled the rail off center of the injector tops and therefore created leaks in almost all the injectors. I made spacers to put between the intake and the fuel rail using old spacers from injector tips and some washers I had. That aligned the rail with the top of the injectors and solved the issue. While you have all that out change your plugs, clean the mass airflow sensor, egr, iac, throttle body and replace the pcv valve, you'll be impressed by how strong and smooth your old 5.4 will run afterwards.

      Most of the newer Dorman manifolds have the intake gaskets built into them so I'm confused did you add another gasket to the equation?

    • @lazarosalazar3366
      @lazarosalazar3366 5 років тому

      @@SandCarServices no, you pull out the existing ones, they are rubber and not glued in or anything like that. You simply pull them out and push in the new ones. Its exactly like replacing the ones on the cross over pipe they are simply wedged in there.

      On your expedition did you use this part number from Dorman or was it a slightly different model? Also did you rebuild the injectors or just put them back in as is.
      I am working on a 1998 5.4 expedition, have manifold(s) , coils, and injectors off and new spark plugs and coils to replace (got a lot of cleaning to do lol)

      @lazarosalazar3366 2 роки тому

      @@charlesbowers3420 I don't remember the part number (used whatever came up for a 2000 5.4) I used the injector rebuild kit which was simply new hats and o rings. I also cleaned them using methods I found on UA-cam with a 9 volt battery, brake cleaner and some hose. Even though it ran fine before, the injectors were pretty dirty and sputtered instead of spraying, before the cleaning. Ran great when all put back together. Good luck with yours. By the way, I have had no problems since. It's plastic so make sure to use a torque wrench.

    Hi Ron I am one of your subscribers, I have a 2003 F-150 your videos have been very helpful to me as I attempt to make repairs on my truck. Here is what is going on:
    I just finished replacing the intake manifold yesterday on my 2003 5.4L F-150 with the Dorman, after the replacement the engine started up right away, therefore putting a smile on my face. Unfortunately, that did not last too long, I turned the truck around in my driveway and the engine started to bog down, parked the truck opened the hood to find no obvious problem. No immediate codes although 2 pending codes that eventually became current codes after running and revving the engine P1132 2003 FORD F150 - Lack of Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor Switch Bank 1 and P1152 2003 FORD F150 - Lack of Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor Switch Sensor Indicates Rich Bank 2. The first time I've seen these codes, only appeared after manifold change.
    I did numerous checks for vacuum leaks and checked coil packs(replaced 18 months ago) and fuel injectors (new) for electrical connection problems. When I rev the engine I am now getting a white grey billowing exhaust. I checked oil and oil cap for water (none), new thermostat and water flowing ok.
    Never had a problem with the oxygen sensor let alone two of them!
    Have you experienced this issue?
    I would sure appreciate any recommendations and or guidance.

    Thanks,
    Ron

    My intake had this exact same issue about 4.5 years ago. I took it to the dealer, and they didn't know where it was leaking from even after I mentioned it might be a cracked intake at the crossover. I took it home, removed the intake, and found it cracked exactly like the one in the video. I used this same Dorman model as a replacement - $175 on Amazon compared to $350 for the OEM. While I agree that the self-tapping connections seem pretty cheap, I haven't had an issue yet after more than 4 years and another 40k miles. 2002 Ford F-150 5.4 V8 Triton

A couple of the coil bolts were a struggle to reach, and there is just a bunch of stuff to take off before you can get to the manifold bolts. That much time standing on the bumper and leaning over into the engine bay was tough. I needed a lot of breaks. Overall I'd say it is challenging but doable. Just make sure you've got the time to disassemble and then reassemble everything. I wouldn't do this if I couldn't have the truck out of commission for at least two days.

    Can't find a new genuine Ford intake manifold part No. 2L1Z-9424-AA for my 2001 5.4l Roush F-150 anywhere. There are plenty listed for sale at dealers, but they actually have none in stock. Local Ford dealer did a nationwide search of dealerships and also found none in stock. Manifold leaks a copious amount of coolant on the passenger side of the crossover pipe. Bought the truck new in 2001 and has only been driven 124k miles, so apparently the plastic just aged out. Will either do the changes necessary to install a pre-2000 aluminum intake or go with the Dorman brand and hope for the best.

    Welp... going through this right now. Apparently my OG 99 Crown Victoria was part of the original recall but the owner didn't get the memo. Back in 2016 I bought the Dorman from Amazon and now, about five years later almost to the day, apparently the intake is leaking fluid on the 1st spark plug. I took my car to the shop almost once a week for the past five weeks... yet they can't get it to replicate the issue. I'm going to have to get to the Ford Dealership and pay something stupid - at least I should be able to get a refund on the original Amazon amount... but what a pain. Thank you for posting this.

    I had to replace my factory intake because all of the threaded inserts for the bolts either were spinning inside the plastic or completely broke out of the plastic same thing with fuel rails bolts. So I really don’t mind the self tapping screws at least I don’t have to worry about the bolts corroding into the brass insert. Mind you my truck is a 2000 2v with 416k miles. I got by not screwing the coils down for about a year but eventually it started leaking coolant down the plug wells causing a misfire. Took me about four hours to complete

    Just a heads up. As of today, 1-20-2023 there is ONLY NINE ford branded replacement manifolds in stock in the country. There is about 700 on back order with no replacement date! So you might HAVE to use the aftermarket parts regardless. In my area of seattle washington, there is NONE in stock. I don't know where the other 9 are, but they are not here. My advice is to carefully inspect the Dorman part to ensure the holes are drilled correctly. You might have to shop around to get a "good" one.

    I just found this video you this morning on UA-cam. I appreciate the insight and would like to add, you are right about the Dorman vs. Ford intake manifold from my experience. I replaced the manifold on my '02 E-350 and have had a high idle and it resembles overheating sitting in traffic after about 5 minutes. I believe this is due to the insulating shroud underneath the OEM not being a part of the Dorman series. I also found out the plastic molded intake is not nearly as thick as the OEM Ford intake. I have not used this old van much for business, since the replacement. i've spent the money on the Ford Intake and will be replacing the aftermarket gamble part this weekend! Thank you for confirming what I wondered for nearly a year!

    Hey Ron, I've got a 2000 F350 with a 5.4. It isn't leaking coolant but one of the brass inserts has broken loose for one of the coils when I went to replace the spark plugs, guess the previous owner put one to many ugga duggas on it, the truck has 100k miles on it. Would it be worth swapping the manifold now or just wait till it starts leaking? I plan on using the Ford OEM manifold. I was able to use a tiny wood screw and screwed it down in between the insert and the plastic to keep it from spinning and cut the head of the screw off. I needed to get on the road the following day for a job, didn't really feel comfortable with the hack job fix, but hay its holding up, so far anyway.

      I would do a leakdown test to check for the head gasket, because it will save you both time and money if it ends up being the head gasket! Not to mention that you can check all your plugs at the same time to see if you can figure out which cylinder may be getting some water in it. (and, since you are there, maybe time to change the plugs..... would love for you to reply to this with what the actual fix was.

I saw where two of the intake gasket rubber o-rings had cracks in them and missing segments. I also replaced several vacuum lines, thermostat and coolant recovery cap. All is good so far.

    I’m dealing with a 5.4 in a 1998 Ford Expedition. It has an upper and lower intake manifold but online I cannot find any info on what upper intake model to use. The F150 of the same year is this part number ^ but someone had suggested to use the 4.6 intake which is 6152278 which looks similar except for the coolant cross over bar has two threaded holes on the left as opposed to one on the right.
    My question is should I get a new lower manifold as well? My heat blanket thing fell apart on removal. Already bought the upper manifold as well as spark plugs and coil packs to replace while I’m in there. I don’t want to throw too much more money in it but also what to do the job right. Also concerned about a valve cover gasket leak as the valley was absolutely coated in grease on one bank and not the other

    With the current (1+ year backorder) of OEM Ford 5.4 manifolds, the Dorman is currently your only option for a new part. Seriously, I called the only four Ford dealerships in the country that might have new composite manifolds and the ones that did have one (1) in stock would not sell it to me. The only other viable solution (and what I ended up doing) is to find a used 1999 aluminum manifold. For '99+ trucks with the PI heads, only a 1999 manifold will work... '97-98 NPI manifolds do not seal properly.

    • @SandCarServices
      @SandCarServices  5 років тому +1

      One of the reasons I said never again in the name of the video. Best thing to do is replace with an O.E.M. manifold. If that's not an option then you have to resort to half as repairs. I say that because you should never have to add any sealant to a rubber style seal gasket.
