Just discovered your wonderful videos and subscribed. When I switched to a finer thread, it helped my EPP and hand piecing stitches become finer. I use size 70 Prime Piecing thread which is glazed cotton. Never use serger thread, which is too weak. Using the methods you describe I get 22 stitches to the inch and it's fast. I sew while watching TV with my husband. Machine sewing would restrict me to another room.
I am currently involved in a block of the week project that has been using a mix of techniques--some standard piecing and others, I can foundation piece. HOWEVER, some now will have to be hand pieced and I am almost paralyzed at how to proceed since it has been 30+ years since I had the need to do this. Like cutting and marking mainly--the getting started part. Hopefully this video series will be of benefit!
So glad I found your site! I heard you on A Quilting Life. I am new to quilting, but have been an avid sewer for decades. I found handpiecing intimidating, but you are clear and concise. This makes my quilting actually portable, especially now that I am enjoying piecing much smaller units. Do you do oversize any of them, then cut down? I noticed the HSTs are cut individually. Looking forward to trying this. Thank you.
So glad you are finding the videos helpful! I don't oversize and trim down, because I mark a precise 1/4' stitching line from the edge of the fabric and I don't want to cut off my knot at the end of the seam. I learned both of these things the hard way! lol
