  • The sweet sorghum variety research trial is coordinated by Pete Nelson with Biodimensions and is managed by Dr. Steve Green. Six varieties of sweet sorghum were planted on 30 inch rows with a John Deere 7100 planter in the spring and will be monitored for vigor, diseases, and yield (both biomass yield and sugar yield). Sweet sorghum is drought resistant and is a high producer of sugar. These sugars can be used to produce fuel ethanol or to produce specialty chemicals for industrial purposes. Sweet sorghum is a crop to keep your eye on as it just could make a resurgence as a viable crop for production in northeast Arkansas.
