Joining the conversation 5 years late but I'm new to junk journaling and have tried to come up with a system that works for me. I have watched many videos before stumbling upon this one - and I think I've found my solution. I love the page protectors and may use sandwich and snack sized zip-locks to further separate and contain smaller pieces inside of the protector sheets. Sewing the protector sheet inside of the file folder is ingenious. I'm still going to use a shoebox to collect images from magazines, wrapping paper etc until they can be trimmed for use and storage. This system is going to free up so much space in my drawer cart - I will be able to use those bins for paper punches, stamps and all of that other good stuff. Thank you!

I also file my stuff...alphabetically. I have an 8-cube cubby from Sam’s with the cloth storage boxes. I used anything i could get my hands on as “files”. Plastic envelopes from Dollar Tree. Actual file folders. Large ziploc bags. Large manilla envelopes I retrieved from the trash at work.🙃(I am NOW purchasing the file folders from Walmart, that have sides, to make my storage look a little nicer.). I now can find anything I want WHEN I need it! I can even make subcategories by placing ziploc bags INSIDE my MAIN folder. Example- FLORA file could be subcategorized into aquatic, desert, flowers, fruits, jungle, plants, trees, vegetables, or whatever I might want.

I use ZipLoc bags for my magazine cutouts. Works pretty good because you can see what’s inside.

I cannot thank you enough for making this video. I have been searching online for weeks trying to figure out a way to reorganize my materials since I never really established a system, so I've got niche groupings all over my room in various containers. I absolutely need the ease and the accessibility of this system--and it's delightfully simple to recreate! I am so happy I found this video

This is what I have been doing, Shannon. Since I am just starting over my stash has different categories. I am missing an internet connection, my printer and my sewing machine. That's a lot to miss yet I have been reorganizing inside my car and it looks like a mini studio is beginning to appear. I have barely enough room to sleep. It does cause me stress but I refuse to let go or give up on art. It is my source of srength and an outlet for my spent emotions. I am praying for a different vehicle. I like the way you decorated the folders and the plastic inserts sewn into the folder. I also like the idea about modern vs vintage. Thanks for the great ideas. Yes, I reorganize the car and the supplies every day, or as often as I can. It helps me to remember what I have.

I've learnt so much from you Shannon. Things like "does that make me happy" in regards to going through magazines and knowing what to keep.also in embracing things that I like..not someone else, but me!!! Something that has bugged me for ages is that I have images all over the place, some in a folder, some in a box...and I want them all together, so this has helped heaps!! Great idea! Horrible confession: I don’t sew. But I’ll try same idea with tape-fingers crossed. 😊 Oh yes, also I’ll sort by topic similar to yours. Another division that comes to mind is type of materials: i.e napkins, fabric paper, tissue, foils, magazines, etc. Uh oh it seemed simpler before I thought of that...

I thought I was the only one who saves little cut-outs from magazines! I love to make personal cards for people, decorate notebooks for journaling, and do decoupage in my crafting. I started out with binders loaded with sheet protectors for my pics. But now I've changed my system. I have very large, clear plastic envelope-type folders that snap closed (so things don't fall out) and I keep my pics in them with labels on the envelopes. I also have some small plastic envelopes (with elastic cords that keep them closed) that I use to store the really small pics.I keep all of them in an extra-large size sturdy shopping tote. It more or less looks like your filing system, but in a tote instead of a box. It's easy to pick up and dig through when I need something. I love cutting things out of magazines. Thanks for sharing your ideas.

Great idea Shannon. I’ve been using folders for a while. Mine go into hanging files and then those hang on a little thrift shop rolling cart. It rolls under a table and I can pull it out when I need it. But I didn’t keep my small pieces in there for the same reason as you. Too easy to get lost or damaged. I keep small stuff in an assortment of box lids, trays and checkbook boxes with a label on the end. I can stack those and put them on a shelf. That’s been working sort of ok but I really like your idea of sewing the sheet protectors into the back of your file folders. That’s a great way to keep those fragile vintage things safe.
    Always enjoy your videos.

managing collage pieces has been ongoing headache for me, too. for years! have tried storing in sleeves in albums and those papers are still sitting the sleeves years later! for creativity, having piles on my desk or free floating in a flat box leads to best happy accidents and most satisfying pages, but that method reaches peak chaos so fast. storing & organizing them takes them out of my flow. i like your file folder with acetate sleeve idea, especially if files are stored in small, easily accessible box within reach of desk. also, seeing your collections made me feel hella lot better about my own massive stash =D def time for me to cull a bunch to make the whole more usable. love you, shannon. great idea.

Oh I so agree with you, I couldn't categorize in color that would personally limit and frustrate me creatively, I am too detailed with my observances, so I get what you are saying. I think that is so great that you were able to tap into what works, I think I would just leave that binder, it looks so easy to look at the items you already have in there. Actually the binder itself looks like a journal, ha!

    • @ShannonGreen

I had 4 of those binders and I absolutely loved them and got inspired every time I flipped through them. But...circumstances changed and they became inconvenient and I got irritated when I had to pull them out. That told me it was time for a change!

I love this video. When someone asks me how to get started I tell them that mixed media, collage is a continuous organization project. For me it has taken years to really organize to specifically fit how I think. I love how you described it. You really do have to know yourself. And to me that is a very important part of being an artist or crafter.

Good luck Shannon. I am to the place that I need to do something different myself, but I have only broken my stuff down into three basic categories. On top of that, I have four or five sets of the same breakdown from different times that I have gone through magazines and collected images! Now I have big envelopes, file folders and bags with all these images stacked on a small table. My husband asked me last week, “is that stuff I need to shred?” That’s when I panicked and decided something needed to happen! I like your ideas, and will have to look at my collection with new eyes. Right now it is just trash, because I can’t find anything when I want it. Thank you.

@@trialsbikeguy Hey there. This was so long ago that I don’t even remember!! I’m so sorry. But you can look up how to use packing tape transfers. I’m sure there’s many videos out there.

I have always admired your binders and the layout thereof because you CAN see all just by flipping pages! I have a similar “system” as your new one and what I don’t like is having to remove everything in a category to look through it :(

Thanks for the great idea! I am in the midst of sorting out all my cut outs, images and scraps and was debating putting them in binders but was not making the commitment to it. Your new system I think will work out well for me too. Appreciate the inspiration, especially the page protector idea because I just did not know what to do with the small bits!

Thank you for the awesome ideas for organizing! I could really relate to the feeling of being overwhelmed by all my STUFF! I had a thought on organizing your "people" pieces. I try to think in terms of how I create my journals and what I might look for in my stash. For example, I usually have themes for each journal. Right now I'm working on a botanical/gardening/nature journal. When I look for pieces from my stash for this journal, I would be looking for herb pictures, flower pictures, words about nature, etc. So maybe it would help to ask yourself how you would go about choosing people for a journal. Would you look for babies, strong women, handsome men, etc. Then maybe those could be your categories. Hope this helps! Crafters unite!

this will work for me now that I see how you organize the little guys. i have all of my images in file folders inserted into those large plastic envelopes and they are on the shelf. well its good but its not good. i had no way to organize the little images without them falling all over and having each file folder separate wasn't easy either. i like to look thru things just as you have shown here. so now you have given me a great option - i like it and i think it will work Thank You Shannon : )

TFS! I do use file folders to sort my images, but the small bits always frustrate me as they do fall out the sides, so the pocket is a great idea I'll definitely be using. My inclination is the perforations sewen right on the folder's crease will weaken it somewhat and may need some reinforcement over time. Using some pretty duck tape or fused fabric strips on the crease would help with that if it's an issue.

"People parts" lol! I have a smaller ephemera collection but I recently put it in some little 4×6 photo albums I have. So far that's working for me because they fit right on my desk. But if my stash gets larger, I may just have to adopt this system lol! Great idea with sewing the sheets into the folders!

Thanks for sharing your ideas, Shannon, I always love organizing tips because I am in dire need of help. I have so many little piles of images to be filed, little baggies of things I've cut out while doing coupons etc. I need to dump them all into the bathtub and start all over. : )
I love hearing about the way you think because of course we all do it differently. Those pink gladiolas would have been filed at my house under flowers....actually, they would be in a pile of dust on my table in the living room hoping to be placed in a home. :~>

    • @ShannonGreen
      @ShannonGreen  6 років тому +3

Those gladiolas are a good example. They could be flowers, they could be pink, they could be backgrounds etc. I had to really ask myself how I would use that particular page. I just couldn't see me cutting them out or choosing them when I was looking for flower images because of their size and shape so I felt like I would most likely use them as a background.
You probably just need to find a chunk of time and space where you dump out all your stuff and start putting like things together. I actually ended up tossing a bunch of stuff because I looked at it, tried to picture how I would use it, and decided I wouldn't because I didn't even like it!! LOL no clue why I save some of the stuff I do but I tossed those things!
