I use a simple laser light (sold at WalMart as a toy to get cats to chase the dot when pointing laser at ground) and lay it in the groove of one pulley and if it’s aligned it will point the beam directly in the groove of the other pulley. May have cost me $5 a few years ago.
Ive walked into a lot of resturants where the door was extremely hard to open, you could hear the whistle of the air when you got the door open and felt the air being pulled into the building.
Yes, mainly small business where they don't want to spend the money. I worked at a Chinese Restaurant, and I think they had 3 rooftop units, 1 of which was always broken, but then during the winter of 2013 I believe it was, the second unit went down. They were so cheap, for a business that grossed at least $1 million annually, that they didn't repair it ALL WINTER LONG. My fingers were numb just using the keyboard, and some customers even complained that they wouldn't be back until it was repaired. That was the most ridiculous thing I ever experienced was purposefully not repairing a rooftop furnace while your dining room is freezing because "it costs too much." And it wasn't like the business was on its deathbed - it's still open today. Although since they're Chinese I don't think they ever re-opened their dining room since the China Virus and they now rely strictly on carry-out and delivery. Maybe cheaper for them to operate without the dining room, that's likely what they're thinking being the penny pinchers they are/were.

When I used to do restaurant work,it was always an issue of filth or balance! Makeup air not working, exhaust not working etc.The bathrooms near the kithchen were always cold etc. The biggest issue waz always getting them to pry the money out of their pocket .
@@misterrichardc Key word maintain! I know alot of people that own restaurants and they are all loaded, they do very well. @@misterrichardc Eating out doesn't cause obesity. Simply eating far too much does. So eating out isn't the issue, and eating out is still more expensive than just preparing meals at home. But eating out is there for people that don't want to make meals at home.
Air balance was totally out of whack in an office building I worked in. Toss in the front desk staff closing down vents to try to control the temperature (poorly placed thermostat) causing even lower pressure in the reception area and sometimes even Hercules would have trouble opening the front doors.
Heh, cracks me up to hear "really old" and "from 2003" in the same sentence... I've got a City Hall that just retired its original 1963 Trane air handlers, and a police department with original 1991 rooftop equipment (coming out this fall and we just had to emergency replace one RTU)... 2003 would be new luxury! It's a good thing they built them strong and we maintained them well, because they're WELL past their sell-by date!
Great stuff. I have four of these MAU at my facility and we use 24 volt RED HAT solenoid valves for water delivery and it completely takes away the water pump frustrations.
Not a HVAC guy but I like your videos and explanations learning how these units work.. I am not fromth US.. Interested to se the damper part working. We have a EVAP Cooler like in Australia I am in Namibia Africa
Something I've been wondering. If you got every change you wanted made standard in the production of units, so that they actually thought about how it would be to repair. Would that even be a 10% increase in cost?
I seen one of your trucks in Claremont on Friday. I’m a residential service tech for a company in redlands. I stay talking about your videos and company. I’m going to be applying some day lol
A solution to the leaking water is rebuild the sprayer where the holes are on top and bottom and not discharging from the side. Also add a CPVC valve to control the water flow to the sprayer.
I'm just a sparky mechanic tossing in my 2 cents. Would there be a way to tie a huge filter bag around the vent where that blows into the building to catch the old dust buildup? Just thinking outside the box. Like a massive fabric bag like 100 something gallon? And use a portable variable frequency drive set up just to slowly ramp up the blower to manage the dust. Or use some massive flexible duct to just short loop the makeup air directly to a vent fan?
@Bryan-Hensley 448a should be in POE, not mineral oil systems. It has to do with oil return....mineral oil is not very good when using a replacement refrigerant
On the cell deck media, is water the only thing you use to clean them, or is there a chemical of some sort to break up potential algae? Never worked on one and just curious.
Maybe replace the media? It seems to be special cardboard material. One manufacturer claims special algae resistance. I was interested too but have no knowledge in this field.
Fuses should never be sized higher than the VA rating of a transformer. That 24v transformer being rated at 250 VA would mean something along the lines of 10 amp fuses. If there's some kind of a short or high load that expensive transformer will be burned up long before the fuses would open.
Does the kitchen have A/C as well as the evaporative cooler? One problem with using an evaporative cooler, if you add too much moisture, then the A/C will have to work harder to pull the moisture back out. (Latent heat).
Remember to laser align in both directions! Motor to fan to make sure those pulleys are aligned in that direction, then from the fan to motor to make sure that the fan pulley is pointing back at the motor pulley.
Nice job Chris. They should definitely replace that.....with DX cooling.....evaporative cooling does work....but not as good as DX does. MUA'S should be used to not cool or heat a space....but to temper the air it is bringing in. We used to maintain anywhere from 60-70° discharge air temp on all the ones I've worked on. I've worked on some really really large MUA'S before and they had up to 7 million BTU burners in them. Direct fired and some smaller ones using indirect with a heat exchanger. I like some of Greenhecks newer ones with conventional condensers that sit on top of the MUA for the summer months.
Ive yet to come across a dedicated outdoor air system, most complain about the cost and keep buying these money pits, eventually just opening their economizers full bore when they become a big ticket fix after 4-5 years. That way the guests AND staff are equally uncomfortable.😂
If the Make Up unit has been off-line for 2 years, I'm not in the least surprised it's blowing dust everywhere... The ducts will be full of dust and should be cleaned by a Duct Cleaning Company before returning the Make Up Unit to Service...
Without a clean machine or a purge solenoid the cell deck is doomed to a short life. With a replacement of water in the sump a few times a day, the entire unit would run 1000% cleaner and components would last much longer. Bleeders waste a lot of water when they work, but they almost always clog over time. The TDS in your area is probably just as bad as here in the Vegas Valley.
How you order a blower assembly but don’t check motor of any of the other controls until the day you show up to install. But then try to blame stuff on a former employee that was under your supervision 🤦🏼♂️
I didn't say it was a former employee it was the previous contractor.... I had originally quoted this two years ago and the customer just wanted the work in the quote done, the disconnect had failed in-between that time. It's no big deal the customer understands and will likely approve me to replace the disconnect
I really wanna see one day how much dust you are talking about when you start it. please, some other time when you this kind of repair put a camera in the kitchen if you can!
Oh i hate this one. You have to losen building than they complain about how well it was before. Ether get an industrial door opener or deal with the balance issues.
Yeah the main diff between this and a swamp cooler is there is no standing sump of water to recirculate, its water is controlled by a solenoid valve that is controlled by a timer...

Sounds less like a dumpster fire and more like the entire rubbish dump is on fire.
Doesn't an evap cooler just turn sensible heat into latent heat and that would add to the load on the A/C system, for no net gain?

😂😂at this point I'm just watching videos randomly to suppress my mental health 😂😂 thanks for the DIY video sir
You need to fuse secondary from transformer so you don't burn out transformer in case of short circuit. Just as you use fuses on 24 volt circuit.
Yeah I think he's well aware of what he needs/needed to do on this one.
Why not push the Fan Pulley in, rather than pull the Motor Pulley out if they are both not tight? Then they'd both have a decent amount of shaft.
Just like a giant furnace fan powered humidifier (or a bypass humidifier without the fan of course.)
