Flashback Friday - Exploring the Nanticoke Coal Generating Station
It’s not often that the opportunity comes up to explore a recently closed power plant, it’s even less likely that many will get to explore a power plant that still has power, such as the Nanticoke Coal Power Plant
In 2015, I had the idea to scout this location and see if it was at all possible, I spent a few hours one day scouting, watching, observing and I came to the conclusion that yes…some day I should attempt this. What I did not know was that at the very same time that I was considering this, two of my exploring friends had already been and were in the process of multiple trips to explore every inch of this vacant coal power plant.
This was top 5 of my best explores ever and there will be very little I do for however long I decide to keep doing this that will ever top the experience of exploring this huge vacant and empty coal power plant, all alone.
In this video we head back to Nanticoke and relive this amazing experience from December 2015
You can see the whole photo gallery and read the complete experience on my website

I worked at this plant from 1975 to 1980 when it was under construction. The Stacker Reclaimer in the coal yard was made by Babcock Moxey and coal was stacked from ships and reclamined into the plant on the B line conveyor. Your entry into the plant was through the coal transfer house up the K conveyors to the coal gallery in the plant that was just above the turbine hall. The plant started construction in 1964 and took 16 years to build at a cost of 1 billion 1970 dollars. A team of 2,500 construction workers toiled for most of the 10 years in the peak of it's construction. When employed there I was allowed to take guests on off hours and give personal tours of the plant. Too bad I wasn't with you to give you a more in depth tour, we wouldn't get lost. Sad that it was torn down, it provided 4,000 megawatts of electricity to our grid that will be needed if we ever get to using electric cars. Thanks for the adventure, TonyK.

Nice Photos! Very brave to go alone! And damn that's a long walk, if you were injured that's gonna be a long limp back to safety of your vehicle :o
This place looks very similar to the RL Hearn Coal plant in Toronto.

Omg! I can't believe they closed! I used to work at a summer camp near there in the late 90s/early 00s!

This is OG urban exploring at it's finest. Very nice.
Too bad such places are getting harder and harder to find and when they do come up, are almost instantly overpublicized on social media, leading to them being secured heavily and or quickly demolished.

Nice! Went there one night totally spontaneous and it was surreal to see in person. Didn't have anything but my phone on me and regret taking more photos. Hard to find many stories of other people going into the plant, so nice to see this video.

I wonder if the cleaned up the coal stuff before demolishing it, those smoke stacks are probably full of filtration media / scrubbers' that clean the air so it's not polluting, but when they demolished it, i doubt they bothered removing that stuff and cleaning it up, so they probably released a TON of toxic dust into the environment ;'(
