  • Shirlie Kemp is known for her musical talents, as well as being part of one of Britain's favourite families, alongside husband Martin, son Roman, and daughter Harleymoon Kemp. Shirlie rose to fame in the 1980s as one half of the iconic pop duo ‘Pepsi & Shirlie’ and before that was a backing singer for legendary band Wham! But little did anyone know that at the height of her fame, Shirlie was battling with debilitating pain caused by the long-term condition endometriosis. Today, Shirlie reveals how Endometriosis affected her teenage years, career and family life right up until she had a hysterectomy at 43.

Glad to hear so many people brining light to Endometriosis - so many women suffer with it and for years it was never spoken about.

Thanks for speaking out on this subject Shirlie. Many of us out there suffering from it. Years of trying to find out what was going on, including seeing a specialist who told me to learn how to unthink the pain I was feeling as I was imagining it! So lucky to have Martin there supporting you and you stuck together through it. Sending you and your loveiy family all the best.

I never had pain when I had a period, maybe once in a blue moon. I only found out I had endometriosis when I tried for a baby. Whilst investigating my fertility I met a wonderful consultant on the nhs who operated on me to remove the endometriosis at the time & went on to have two wonderful sons naturally. I had hoped for more children but it never happened but I also never suffered with any pain & am extremely thankful for my sons.

Thank you shirlie kemp.this made me cry as everything said is my experience, minus the babies. People have no idea the agony of periods with endometriosis.
I found miscarriages less painful,so that resonated with your birthing story.we need this made public so something can b done

I have suffered for over 30 years with out of body pain, taken morphine and gets you to a 10/10 pain to try to cope, but i coudn't have one child even so i see this as we are in an even worse group than Shirlie but of course my heart goes out to her for the chronic pain but when you couldn't have children on top that is the cruelest level of endometriosis IV which is my circumstances and it devasting as for over 30 years i've just worked very long hours covering women with kids as you become the scape goat and you get older and realise the endo is so severe you will never have a natural child in this life

It’s only so much better if you have private healthcare at the moment. I belong to menopause support uk, and fibroids UK and from what I am reading women are still suffering with very little support from the NHS, GP’s are very difficult to navigate.

Glad that it’s being brought out into public eye. I myself suffered for years with it. Like Shirley, infertility was an issue thankfully I now have two beautiful children. More needs to be done to highlight Endometriosis and treatments. It is an awful thing to have to go through and not suffer in silence.

I suffered with endometriosis, I used to go to bed, with a hot water bottle, the doctor just ignored my problems, gave me pain relief, I ended up on the pill unfortunately, It didn't suite me, I ended up with a pulmonary embolism, yes I nearly died, then I was advised to used the coil, 17 years ago I had to have a operation I had cysts on my ovaries fortunately I ended up just after not having periods it was such a relief
