  • This is my second time to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan! This backpacking trip was shorter on mileage but not on the amazing experience! We hiked from little beaver lake all the way to mosquito group campsites. We brought plenty of backpacking gear that was ultralight backpacking gear and also lightweight backpacking gear.

    Absolutely gorgeous scenery. But also, thanks for showing the real-life parts like the drive in and dealing with trees across the road. Seems most folks edit to make everything appear artificially perfect. I worry false expectations ruin trips for people, causing them to avoid future adventures.
    Good stuff, sir. Thanks much!

    If you’re ever back in the area not backpacking I highly recommend camping at woodland park campground in Grand Marais. It’s right on the lake, you can walk into the park, you get cell signal, and you can walk into town. The town isn’t much but you can get beer, ice, and they have food trucks and a farmers market during busy season.

    The beginning gave me flashbacks of a doomed trip where we couldn't get to the trailhead because of flooding. I am one of your international followers, from Norway. I am not familiar with the measuring system in the US. When you talk about how far you have been hiking I have to calculate how far it is in kilometers. When you talk about the weight of your gear I have to calculate in to grams. When you edit your video can you somewhere on the screen put the international mesures?

    I worked for Hiawatha National Forest and our headquarters were in the Pictured Rocks office. Never heard of someone getting busted at the wrong campsite outside of maybe Labor Day or Memorial Day weekends. Heck, I wound up in the wrong camping spot from my permit solo hiking the trail. I think it comes down to a safety and crowd control tool.

      As someone just getting into backpacking, I'd love to see more of the set up, camp chores, and small things that often get left out. These are some of the things I'm most anxious about doing wrong or forgetting! Especially with so much equipment out there and so many methods of doing things, seeing it in action someplace other than a living room or backyard is really helpful. I love watching your videos and just want to say thank you for making the whole hobby feel really accessible. When I first started researching, everything seemed to funnel down to ultralight and long thru hikes and it made taking the first steps feel overwhelming. Seeing small things, like that you bring two pillows, is really relieving to me and a reminder that It's okay to bring extra comforts, and that I don't have to fret over buying top of the line ultralight equipment or hike the PCT to enjoy the outdoors.

      I’ve had lots of requests for the super basic stuff when it comes to backpacking. Stuff that you might not see in typical trip videos. • @DanBecker
      @DanBecker  5 років тому

      Hi Mark! I actually did the full 42 miles back in October and filmed that one as well. It was one of my very first UA-cam videos. You can find it on my channel still. Honestly this is not that difficult of a hike either. It’s really just the mud and sometimes trails aren’t marked very well. But other than that it’s worth it for the beautiful scenery!

  • @BackOutside

    so is a quilt just a sleeping bag without the zipper?

    • @DanBecker
      @DanBecker  5 років тому +3

      BackOutside with Nick and Ry no it’s similar to a down blanket but still has the ability for a foot box. It’s less weight than a sleeping back as there is no material underneath you. You typically don’t need material underneath you when you have a sleep pad.

    • @BackOutside
      @BackOutside 5 років тому

      @@DanBecker ah ok, thanks for the response. ive watched a couple videos explaining the difference and still never really understood. blanket with a foot box now it all makes sense . lol

    • @DanBecker
      @DanBecker  5 років тому +4

      🤣 Honestly, it can easily be just as warm as a sleeping bag. When you lay in a sleeping bag you’re just compressing the insulation underneath you and it becomes virtually useless. Losing that material can significantly reduce the weight of the sleeping bag and turn it into a quilt!

    • @DanBecker
      @DanBecker  5 років тому +3

      Oh one more thing… And since it’s a blanket it’s much easier to regulate the temperature if it gets really warm. You can just stick a leg out for instants.

      Hey Earl! Honestly with the new Nemo pad I sleep on in the tent.. I’m really enjoying it! But the real reason I’ve been switching back-and-forth is because I’m either hiking with my kids or hiking with guys that don’t have their own gear so I’ve been loaning out hammocks to them to try out.
