    Nice video, I like the egg carton idea. It would be nice to have a parts washer but one thing I use to clean oily non-painted services is oven cleaner, the cheap stuff. Spray it on and let it sit for about 20 minutes and clean off. Also brake cleaner works really good.

      Haven't tried brake cleaner on it. Maybe a video idea...?

    Great video. Been looking through project Jeeps myself, and fun videos like this make the restoration look a lot more doable and working in the engine a lot less scary than many will think to begin with.

    I know this is 5 years old but as far as washing parts, those 5 gallon square tubs that kitty litter comes in makes for some pretty good scrub tubs for kerosene or diesel as a cleaner and it doesn't break down when it's stored in them.

    Got a '92 2.5L. Its my project vehicle also my first vehicle since high school (Thank you Dad). Now i barely have it running and there is so much rust most would just sell it or junk it. My fiance actually wants to turn it into a Jurassic Park Jeep (shes a Jeeper, shes a keeper). You bet your a** Im gonna teach my kids how to work on cars so they can save a lot of $$$ too in the future.

    I’m sure you’ve already got them clean by now but just wanted to say like you I don’t have a parts washer either but I’ve found a small tub of Diesel and a scrub brush does the trick for me. Then a quick wipe down with shop rags or paper towels and shoot with break cleaner and wipe again

    Doing the same thing to a 1983 258 in a Scrambler right now, I pulled the head first with the rocker arms still attached and eased the push rods out. Now I'm going to take head to machine shop to be clean and checked out.

    Egg cartons are also useful to organize bolts and paint bolt heads. I flip the carton over, and use the bottom of the egg pockets.

    I 'm loving the series because Ive never done this and I think I can with a good set of instructions . . . but didn't I see you take the head off in video #2 and now here in #3 it's back on the clock as you take the lifters out.

    On the topic of egg cartons.... I used to use egg cartons to make APCs for my GI Joes when I was single digits old. Cut slits for windows, widen the seats, and all that. They'd be facing forward, legs flat, and each would take up 2 "egg" spots.

  • @bradfordjeff

    I put all the parts directly into the parts cleaner basket. If they are worn in a way that requires them to go back where they came out, they need to be replaced.

    Awesome channel JeepSolid, I'm just about to tackle this project too, looking at the service manual the pushrod length for '99 4.0 is 9.640 - 9.660 inches, but the replacement part - melling MPR-437 is 9.639 should I look for something closer to 9.660 or am I over thinking this?

    I put new lifters, push rods, and rocker arms in a new rebuild engine. Problem I seem to come across is after putting all this together the rocker arms seem to have slop in them. Engine has not been started yet do to the worry something is wrong. I can move the rockers side by side and they move freely. Now the ones that are pushing down springs i can't move of course. Any advice as to what could be the cause

    • @cajunmaker6917
      @cajunmaker6917 4 роки тому

      There should be some “lash” for the rockers where their corresponding pistons are at top dead center (TDC). This “lash” is a result of factory spec clearance between the rocker arm and where it contacts it’s corresponding valve. This can be checked with feeler gauges. The clearance specs can be found in Haynes or chillin manuals or on the internet. These clearances should all be checked when the piston for the particular rocker set you are checking is at TDC.

    My 4.0 looked just as bad having oil and grime along with carbonized deposits and overheated oil varnish. Get yourself some Potassium hydroxide (lye) which works better than standard common lye, it's used extensively in soapmaking and can be found easily online or even locally. I use an old crockpot dedicated for this purpose. Pour about 1/2 gallon of distilled water into the crockpot, start sprinkling your KOH (potassium lye) flakes into the water. CAUTION: As lye dissolves in water, exothermic heat is produced! So add slowly and use an old wooden spoon to stir. WARNING: Strong lye solutions as well as weak solutions are caustic! Which means it'll chemically burn your eyes, skin, and respiratory passages if you take a bath with the stuff or simply splash some on you. SO BE SURE TO WEAR THICK NITRILE GLOVES, LONG SLEEVES, PANTS, AND CHEMICAL SAFETY GOGGLES! A RESPIRATOR IS ALSO A GOOD IDEA IF YOU FEEL SO COMPELLED! DO NOT TOUCH YOUR FACE, PICK YOUR NOSE, TOUCH YOUR EYES OR ANYTHING OF THE SORT WHILE WEARING GLOVES AND WORKING WITH CAUSTIC LYE SOLUTION, IT WILL HURT! FLUSH WITH PLENTY OF COLD WATER IF YOU DO GET SOME ON YOU, AND FOLLOW WITH FRESH SQUEEZED LEMON JUICE! Now turn you crockpot on low and allow any small parts, bolts and whatever to soak in heated lye solution. After about 30-60 minutes, remove parts and rinse with plenty of clean cold water. Then be amazed with how incredibly clean your parts look. Can also brush onto large part and heads, use a metal brush to scrub really heavy deposits and re-soak.

    If you just throw all the nuts, bolts, and various parts into 1 box as you take them off, it is a lot more challenging come reassembly time. Ask me how I know. You can also leave them in strategically located piles on the floor - but beware - stupid friends may kick them as they walk through mindlessly disregarding your smart organization skills, and then try to blame you! Evil cats are also known to take off with the smaller screws, so they have to be watched - don't trust them. Oh, and wives or Grandmothers may come through, pick them up, to clean the garage, and upset the order you had the parts in. But what can you do then? Maybe cry or drink another beer.
