  • Spec Racer Ford #25 works it's way from back of field (no qualifying time) but cannot get around an RX7 with a pretty good motor. While trying to avoid the spinning RX7, SRF 25 is t-boned by the RX7. The beefy side pod protected driver from any injury other than to his wallet. Note the 1st lap where same RX7 "appeared" to force another SRF off the track just before the keyhole turn. Just my imagination or not? Would like to hear other opinions.

Thanks Gene. Good advice. But the Rx7 driver did not follow the both feet in rule which I follow. He was "coasting" and left me guessing where he would end up. He could have locked them up and easily stopped on track. Some racers try to get stopped, which is more predictable and some feel they need to get off the track. But that's racing:). Hope you enjoyed the video.

Damn that's a bad way to end the weekend. What class of car is this, anyway? Looks like a stripped down prototype

But you know that this was you fault, right?
You saw him spinning and thought you could gain some time.
If you simply slowed down a little, you would have been able to drive around him and finish the race

Yes, you are partially correct. It "could" have been avoided and my weekend would have been much better. My FIRST reaction was to avoid a crash. And yes, my second thought was "advantage". But totally my fault, no. I'm sure the Miata driver who went left had the same reaction I did. He was luckier. Had I slowed "a little" as you stated, I may have T-boned the RX7. Hard to say. You have to "guess" where the spinning car will head or stop. He made it harder to predict by not locking up his brakes. Racing IS about gaining any advantage possible if you ever want to win. My lap times are faster than the RX7 but he had better straight line speed. He was slow in the corners. Not to mention locking up his rear wheels under breaking and dumping fuel on the track. I was waiting for an opportunity to get around him. I have won this race from the back (I had no qualifying time due to not running that morning in the rain) and it is risky. That's racing. You have to take some chances when moving from that far back. An unwritten "rule" in racing is that you put both feet in when you get hit or lose it......clutch in so you don't stall and hard on brakes so you can get stopped quickly (if you are that far gone). So, I put some blame on the RX7 driver. "Most drivers" will lock em up. In this particular corner, I have seen cars spin off both the left and right side of the track. He was done spinning and was "rolling" or maybe even under power. I have hit my brakes in this sort of situation and was rear ended with a worse outcome than this. Watch my "crash and spin" video. These cars are low and you don't always see what is going on in front of the car ahead of you. Hope you enjoyed the video.

I really want to get into this. I'm not to far from this place living in Columbus, OH. Website isn't the best for this track about what all a beginner needs to get trained up.

Hi James. Glad you like my videos. Best place to start is scca.com. You can run your street car in parking lots with cones as an inexpensive way to start. Im sure Columbus has lots of that activity. The local SCCA club will have a schedule of parking lot events where you can go spectate for starters. You just have to talk to people doing it to get the best info. If you want to see some action at Mid-Ohio, I am racing there October 11 and 12. You can get into the track on my crew list and watch the races close up. Put another post here if you are interested.

It was obvious the driver in the RX7 was taking advantage of the good power put down by the Wankel but lacked good braking technique and braking setup obviously left rear tire locking up more than once

Good observation. Obviously we need to make split second decisions and once made not much time to change your mind. In that corner, spinning cars go left and sometimes right when spinning. Hard to tell each time. The yellow RX7 driver should have locked up his brakes (both feet in rule) and things would have turned out much better. Oh well, I needed a winter project. Thanks for commenting.

You can see the white Miata consider the inside for a second then bail left. It looks like you'd already committed to the inside when he decided to try to get himself off the track. I probably would have done the same thing as the gap on the inside was big enough and the outside had a slower car in a avoidance maneuver, no telling if he was going to spin as well.

Got that right. He forgot the two feet in rule when spinning. Brakes and clutch. If he would have stopped on track vs rolling off, we both could have saved a lot of $$$$$

@@alienxyt I quit in 2016. 30 years was enough. Bought a 14 Porsche Cayman S. Tracked it twice a year with Porsche club at Putnam Park Race Course. Sold it last Year and bought a 21 Cayman GT4. Ran Putnam last weekend and had a blast. Still have my wits at 69. Keeps me sharp. And I can have fun almost every weekend vs a few weekends a year in SCCA. THANKS for asking. You racing? Oh, I see you scuba. I just took that up at 65. Love it. Fkn Covid screwed up diving last year or so

@@raydalton6396 good to hear. I have too many hobbies. Track a 2015 ZX-10R motorcycle in A group. I agree, track days are great. Good to be able to wring it out in a safe place. Enjoy the scuba. It is great. Key Largo and Cozumel when the rest of the world won't have us.👍

I have got to agree. the rx7 has a ton of motor and is a little light on sense. He pushed the spec car into the grass for sure. Helluva drive but I saw the crash coming. once he locked the brakes (tire smoke from rear) he was in way too hot. Once it started to come around you juked right to try and miss... should have juked left where he was and you might have missed him. I know, hindsight is 20/20 but I learned that years ago on short dirt, aim for the car and he will normally be gone by the time u get there. thought about building a f500 or 600 car but I dont have the time, money or reflexes of my youth. I will just watch and remember.

From my view it seems as though the whole pack was pretty aggressive. I looked like he actually got tangled and pulled out a little with the first incident. I would blame heavy traffic and poor judgement on his part. The second however seems like he suffered from brake lock after avoiding the darting miata. If I was you I would have braked hard left but that's me. Glad you guys are all ok.

I havent looked at this in a while. Nice comments. So im the yellow RX7, right front was locking up,just to make that clear, would not have finished the one hour race with that problem.. I tightened up to avoid a miata causing the spin. No I did not "both feet in" I really thought I could save it. Sorry to spec racer, we talked and he was cool after......Shit happens. Thanks to his video, makes me look like im somebody, couldhave been....maybe

Oh yea, that first SRF I pushed off. You cant see those cars even in my short RX7. We touched wheels, steering wheel was jerked out of my hands by our wheels touching. I did not push him off on purpose, never would. It happens
