Thanks for your comment. I hope you grow to love gardening. I agree with you: everyone should have a course on it in school. It’s a life skill not only a hobby.
Yes, the weather here in the Isle of Man GB, is pretty much the same as what you’re dealing with over the other side of the world! Desperately rubbish summer this year!
First time gardener here and what I’ve learned this year is that I will be skinnier by the time I’m successful. Lol. You answered several questions. Guess I’ll be watching for seeds now. Thanks for letting us know about male and female too.
First time gardener! I just transplanted my spinach and romaine plants that I had purchased from Lowe's into my raised garden that I started from scratch. I was super proud...but I already managed to murder my romaine. I didn't even know what "bolt/ed" meant until I Googled "what is this strange milky substance leaking from my romaine"? Fingers crossed; I hope my spinach doesn't bolt! Fascinating video!
Exactly right, and every year is different too. On the bright side when the spinach starts bolting, it means that tomatoes and other summer veggies will start growing like crazy!
Question ? Do you cut the spinach down or out completely when it’s bolted? Or will that same plant if I leave it alone bloom in the fall? First time spinach grower!
Great question! The bolted spinach will not regrow even if you cut it all the way down. However, bolted spinach will produce seeds that you can plant for your fall crop! I usually leave some of my bolting plants for seeds, but if I'm really short of space I'll put it all in the compost and plant a summer crop to take advantage of the heat!
Nature always throws up some crazy curveballs and bolting is one of them! Good luck with your next spinach crop! My accent is a bit of a mix I know. I actually lived next door (in Vermont) for a while, but I'm originally from the South and have now been living overseas for 17+ years!
Hi Jenevive. Thanks for your question. In my experience, shading can help delay bolting but it doesn't prevent it once the outside temperatures get too high. Most gardeners turn to spinach alternatives like Malabar spinach if they want to keep a crop going all summer in hot climates. Also, depending on where you live, you might be able to plant a fall crop like me of regular spinach. I hope this helps!
My spinach was doing really well then th e leaves turned brown, it didn't bolt though, I dug it all up and started again... Oh dear I've been greedy 😱😭 great share thanks
Thanks. I just want to know if I can cut the entire top of spinach of, where it's a out to flower, will the bottom continue to produce or will it croak?? 😂😂😂😂😂Please❤❤❤❤
Even if you cut off the flowering part, normally the spinach leaves will be starting to taste bitter. The spinach won’t die from cutting the flower off though. I do this sometimes with other greens to get one more harvest (even if it’s not the best taste!)
There’s nothing really you can do once it starts to bolts. Spinach is easily triggered by a sudden heatwave, too much light, and even dry conditions. Fortunately, it germinates quickly (approx. 5 days), so you can direct sow another batch if your conditions are right. I have both a crop of bolted spinach (planted in fall) and a new crop of thriving spinach (planted in spring) in my garden right now. Good luck!
The first flowers are the male flowers and it's normal for them to bloom and then fall off. Some say it's the plant's way of attracting pollinators to it. As long as your plants are getting enough water & sunlight, you shouldn't worry. Hope this helps!
Spinach is wind-pollinated. If you had male plants but removed them or your neighbor has spinach growing, your female plant might have already been pollinated. If I were you, I would test a few seeds after harvesting them. If they don't grow, then you'll know that you need to buy new seeds instead of planting ones that don't grow next season! Hope this helps

@@NowGardening I love New England :) Thankyou again
that omelet though yummmy
It's kind of like the "when life give you lemons..." saying. When mother nature gives you bolting spinach, make an omelette 😉
Can you please give the info about what type of the spinach in your video ?
Because we don't have the spinach like that in my country.
I believe the variety I was using at the time of the video was Winter Giant (spinacea oleracea).
Will a shade net work in summer?

This is not what to do when Spinach bolts. Missing is - what to do when Spinach bolts.I'm sure you understand.
Well it regrow with the seeds on it I don’t have a male plant I just have a female

Did not know there were male and female spinach plants!
Isn’t it fascinating? Plants have so many secrets for us to discover!
This is 2022 they're probably non-binary finish plants
