  • It seemed like a good idea. A dual-purpose farm utility vehicle and a fun/sporty ATV.
Hmmm - before you make the same mistake I did, let’s see exactly why this was a bad idea - for me.

    Hi Howard!!😀😀
Sorry to see you are having trouble with the Gator with that few of miles on it. That shifting problem doesn't sound good.
We have a carry all golf cart with a 4' by 4' utility dump box on the back that works well for around the farm. The only downside is it's 2 wheel drive and dosen't have very much ground clearance. But it's easy on and easy off and carries a really heavy load. You can round it right up with firewood and it handles it great. For zipping in and out of pastures it works really nice. It also hardly uses any gas at all.
Good luck on the repairs and maybe finding the right utility machine to fit your needs.
    Take care my friend!!😀😀❤

Love the suggestion Al - both one of my former neighbours and now my new next door neighbour do the same. And it works.
Haha - I'm a slow learner, so for some reason had not thought that might work for me. Your's sounds like it's spec'd perfectly.
Thanks for your continued friendship and advice all these years. Here's to the journey.

I've used mine to help my old man move logs and stuff on our land and it hates idling. But beating on it and revving it hard, on trails and open roads, never had any issues in 1k miles.

Your advice was right on the money. We keep it in low gear around the farm and like you say, rev it long and hard, and it's been terrific.

@@howardkettner My machine is currently in shop with an issue with the parking brake of all things. Glad to hear yours is doing well!

@@Scybren I hear you. $400 to fix my parking brake issue. That parking brake is badly designed and badly manufactured, and yet because JD would not take any responsibility my trip to the shop on that issue cost me $450. Just sad and wrong.

@@howardkettner Mine's going to run closer to $1200 due to some sheared bolts, apparently did more damage on its way out than first realized!

I'd be great if JD or some other entity acquired the rights to produce these again while fixing the electrical quirks, engine noise and definitely, the issues you stated.

For sure - the fixes are all quite simple IMO!

Mine is doing that too! How much was that fix?

    • @howardkettner
      @howardkettner  2 місяці тому

Not a good day. $1070 Canadian - before taxes and shop supplies.
To fix it they had to remove the cargo box, reomove air cleaner housing, seats and seat mount assembly, also the protective shield under the gator, before diconnecting the 4 wheel drive shaft.
All this to remove the drive clutch and replace.
Can you believe it. 414 hours and the clutch is shot!!
I paid the bill and sold it.
Bought a Honda side by side and never looked back.

Thanks for tuning in! Ended up deciding to keep it. Ever since the dealer's work put it into better than new condition, it's been a beast - in all the right ways.

They still look like the Massimos ...are they still building them for Deere?

From what I understand from my local dealer they have been discontinued. I was not aware of the Massimo's connection. Great info.
Haha - truth be told, I was not aware of Massimo. Clearly I live in a cave. hahaha
From what I understand John Deere - at least in Canada is no longer selling them.
Thanks for being part of my growing knowledge base.

@@howardkettner ..yes a some years back HiSun or Massimo bought out the Yamaha Rhino line and badged them as Massimo, Cub Cadet, Coleman, John Deere, etc...Then they gave them some refreshed looks along the way ...now there was another type John Deere Gator out there that was much different. ..
