Hey, great video. Right now I'm trying to digitize a Hi8 tape that looks fine when played on the camcorder but red and green grains appear in the capture software. I've tried the Elgato Video Capture, which seems to be the same thing you have, and Roxio Video Capture. The same problem happens on both. It may also come up black and white at certain points.
Hey, it turns out I was able to solve the problem. If it helps you or anyone on here. I had access to a commercial grade vcr. I hooked the camcorder into the vcr via rca connection. I kept the vcr connected to the computer through the Roxio video capture, and both video AND audio worked perfectly then. I'm guessing capture cards may not work well with certain camcorder tapes when you connect the camcorder to the card directly. @@gotmemories
Questions! The time and date and some other information is being recorded onto the program as well. Any ideas about how to remove that from the display?
A observation, I have just finished transferring 140 Hi8 Tapes to DV. I had a snow issue ( white banding noise across the image ) on 1 tape only, well some minor issues on a few others. But this 1 in particular was like watching a heavy snowstorm, multiple FF/rew all to no avail. This morning I was finally going to dump it after 6 months, I'll give it one more go. Popped in the cassette checked the Camera monitor, snow ball still. Fired up Quicktime 7 ( still goods for rough cuts ) opened a new Movie recording window pressed play on the DV camera ( I thought I would let it run through one last time ) and checked the computer window and Lo and behold there is a perfectly acceptable image on the Quicktime 7 Window. Now here is where things get weird, DV Cam still showing snow, QT recording on computer showing snow, BUT if I ff/rew 10 seconds the image clears up as good as all the other 140 cassette except it will only show the good image on pass through, the recorded QT 7 file still has the snow. Any idea how this is possible and any way to capture that clear video.???
Hey got a quesiton for ya. Im capturing some 8mm tapes and some have been good some are black and white. Some flicker between color and black and white. In some cases one scene on a tape is color the next captures black adn white. But yet on camrea playback (i have a color screen) its all in color... just the capture is black and white. Whats going on here any ideas???! Your videos are awesome
@@gotmemories sounds good I ordered another unit just to have reference. I also bought that sony head cleaning tape you recommended.. will go from there. Just weird the video on the viewfinder looks perfect but the capture isn't. Thanks for the respomse
By any chance, do you know what “16bit” means? I have it displaying it on my screen when I’m watching a tape. I also have the format icon displaying as well. Thank you
I have a sony ccd-tr55e working. However when i play my old 8mm tapes back its fine watching through the viewfinder, when i connect to my pc to capture the video, I get av pal no signal blue screen the video plays but is fuzzy then the blue screen no signal, this happens with all my 8mm tapes. Tried connecting to TV same thing any ideas?
My SonY DCR TRV 140e was giving me blue screen while playing. Luckly i had one of those cleaning cassetes around that was still sealed since 2002. It worked. The tapes seems working fine now.
I have some static horizontal lines that appear and disappear on my hi8 cam corder, will using a video head cleaner be the solution? or is it something else?
Out of curiosity, on a professional level, why would you use a cheap elgato video capture instead of firewire or a blackmagic intensity. Elgato doesnt capture all the data, and only does 30fps, while the other options captures ALL the data at the proper 60i format. I used to run a transfer service out of my house when i was 16, and used either the blackmagic or firewire to preserve all the data. (it did take longer though to re-encode the uncompressed data to a more manageable file size)
Covered this subject about 200 times in almost every video, simple answer is economics. People don’t want to pay for the time involved and the file sizes are astronomical. Lots of ways to increase quality of course but when you have a customer base kicking tires and seeing Facebook ads for $7 for a 2hr tape, they expect miracles for $3.50 per finished hour. If you wanted to start your biz up again, I’d GLADLY outsource to you for $3.50 per finished hour!! Let me know!
how would i be able to restore the broken footage and audio if its possible? like for example a tape recorder is like a cake with its ingredients (video), if it goes bad, it really has gone bad and it cant be eaten do u trash it. Is this the case?
How can you record a camcorder tape onto a DVD via a computer ( if so what type of computer and how or what type of video capture is used). Could you or anyone give an answer please.
I don't recommend the head cleaning tapes, as it files down the heads ruins them quickly and finding replacement 1s will become more difficult as time moves on. Thanks for calling out these scam companies, along with being so transparent!
Cleaning tapes are a quick fix, I usually preempt the need for them with proper regular cleaning. I’ve become so frustrated with these scam companies and other smaller ones doing crap work. There’s zero consumer awareness to call companies out.

Not sure what in the world is going on there. Maybe try different cables, camcorder, computer ..

Each device is different, look up the model number & instructions on google and hopefully guide you step by step.
Thanks! I found one and figured it out! Appreciate the response@@gotmemories

Interesting. Shoot a video with your phone and upload that to UA-cam and email info@gotmemories.com the link
Is it possible to salvage tapes that are damaged possibly by heat conditions?
Possible

You need to try the tapes in different camcorders to eliminate if it’s the tapes or the player. First step.

Relating to the audio more than likely

Sounds like dirty or worn video head
@@marcosandtoes7454 dirty head
My camcorder works, tapes are in good shape, but when I insert it and press play they don’t play, even after rewinding. Any idea why that is?
Probably dirty video head

Do you ever bake the tapes?
Sometimes if they are really bad.

Head typically

You’ll need an array of hardware and software. Not something easily explained in UA-cam comments. All the best.
I remember cleaning video heads with Carbon Tetrachloride on a cotton bud
Classic!
when i plug everything into my computer i just get a black screen even when i rewind the tape nothing plays
Need 3-5 camcorders to cross reference and know how to clean your heads.
