    The question is, with the high cost of lego, would making meth this way even be possibly profitable
    Edit: writing this just because I keep getting similar responses around this idea. I am very aware that there are more profitable ways to make meth than making it from Lego. I was just curious if you even COULD make a profit from Lego meth, or whether it would be completely impossible to make even a marginal profit.

    Hello fellow chemists, I made this video a long time ago.
    I'm currently working on getting my PhD. in Organic Chemistry.
    I've taken a look at the old comments underneath and am happy that the video attracted lots of interest.
    What I have done in this video was purely to make an educational point, its stupid to actually do it like this and the synthesis route is relatively arbitrary.
    It is however chemically sound, the people in the comments who are trying to say that what I described is wrong should read Clayden's Organic Chemistry, they're not completely wrong themselves but for legal reasons, I had to leave something as an exercise for the reader.
    I am thinking of making a second video discussing this with the hindsight of a completed BSc. and MSc. in the field.
    When I made this I was still doing my BSc.
    I might be making more videos, although I am still thinking of what they should be about.

    Ok so I have a question. Assuming Walter is a genius and his chemical formula is tweaked to perfection to achieve 99.1% purity as they say: Afaik some crystal latices need as little as 10ppm of impurities to be coloured, wouldn't the .9% out of their 99.1% pure meth be enough to give it color?

      it would never be that blue lol, even 95% pure stuff made with the P2P method (which is extremely pure mind you, they make it look way too easy on that show, no way someone would make 99.1% pure meth in an RV, that is ridiculous) is just ever so slightly blueish, not even close to the show's baby blue crystals.

      I can see why they did it, since for the plot to work Walter's meth needed to be the best stuff on the market to give a reason why he's so successful.
      One option I think would have been better is if Walter uses his knowledge from Grey Matter to make a new kind of meth that's stronger and more addictive, but is hard to synthesize and requires skills, knowledge, and equipment that only he has. 3:20 This is an invalid synthesis. The Grignard would attack the less substituted carbon of the epoxide. But more importantly, the proposed product of this Grignard is invalid: the product includes a carbon with five bonds, and an improper alcohol. Instead, perform a hydroboration-oxidation of styrene to yield a primary alcohol. Oxidize the alcohol via PCC and then install a methyl group via a Grignard. Very fun video concept!

    • @LuxaUsesYouTube
      @LuxaUsesYouTube Рік тому +2

      4:09 Also, the methylamine addition to the carbonyl is valid, but remember that in order for reduction by LiAlH4 to occur, the carbonyl must be intact and so the oxide resulting from the methylamine addition can't be reduced directly. Dehydration then hydrogenation is a better option here.

Which would be example 2 in the video........ AND that is where the mistake is. The epoxide will open with the oxygen on the benzyl carbon making 1_phenyl_propan-1-ol. But in your example you put the oxygen on the SAME carbon as you put the grignard methyl group making 1_phenyl_propan_2_ol . That is WRONG.

Then do a grignard with that and methyl bromide to make 1_phenyl isopropanol. Oxidize that to p2p with bleach(hypochlorous acid) and then do a reductive amination to make meth .........BAMM

    I'm glad it DIDN'T go that way, but it's an interesting thought that psuedo is the easiest way to make meth, but it's definitely not the only way. You just gotta find something that has the chemicals you want, and moving towards making meth is usually a lower-energy state than it starts as.

    Correct me if I’m wrong but Walt was making meth with methylamine phenylacetone and an aluminium amalgam. Someone maybe can also correct me on this but when synthesising meth using phenylacetone you create a 50/50 racemic mixture of Levo and dextro methamphetamine litterally making his meth 50% in “quality”. Using pseudo does give you 100% dextromethamphetamine and unless he separated the dextro from the levo he would’ve went back In quality.

    • @Just.A.T-Rex
      @Just.A.T-Rex Рік тому +1

      That 50% of each is 99%> pure. Easy to separate

    • @benzenering2183
      @benzenering2183 Рік тому +1

      @@Just.A.T-Rex No, since these are enantiomers, they have identical chemical properties. It is possible to sepearate if you do enantiomeric resolution (which requires reacting the product with a chiral molecule to make diastereomers, separating the products, and performing another reaction to get rid of the other chiral molecule), or passing it through a chiral column (which is expensive). So in short, the separation is possible, but not easy in any way.

    • @Ormaaj
      @Ormaaj Рік тому

      I don't know that the levo has much undesirable action so having it there isn't necessarily a problem. The dextro is what you want though. A process that isolates it is obviously preferable. Kind of a boring molecule anyway with the specificity of needing the isomer being the only interesting part. Unless you happen to have ADHD - where the amphetamines have super useful effect that other stimulants can't match for some reason. That's the big cool application. ADHD is ultra common and life destroying.
