The gun ship would take out anything that could attack it first, not foot soldiers as you said, plus notice how the planes on the deck of the carrier just disappear when they are hit. Typical CGI, not at all realistic, that slow moving aircraft would had been swarmed by enemy fighters or shot down with missiles long before it could had done that much damage, unless it was accompanied by a whole squadron of air cover.
