I appreciate that he starts by saying "this is an oud. O. U. D. it's the grandfather of the western lute". This is an appropriate orienting point for many, many of us westerners. alot of people jump in and say "i'm going to teach you this thing" and then they play something incomprehensible to my poor little brain.
There's a famous Iraqi oud player who lives in my city (Albuquerque, NM) named Rahim al Haj. I work in Iraq right now and I really want to get an oud to pass the time.
Lessons learnt: 2:30 Best position of risha (pick) for picking is between the two small holes and the one big hole 3:17 45 degrees picking, play on the double string 3:35 Do not use force - use your gravity and weight instead when picking 4:04 Tuning the Oud - tune the strings to sound the same as each other 5:10 Debrief on the course 5:31 Western Music scales vs Middle Eastern scale (his example is the Rast scale) 6:07 About the course. Suggests 10 hours of practice per lesson.
What I do rather cleverly here is I use a Guitar Strap which makes it easier to keep the Oud in Playing position. Mine is an Acoustic-Electric Oud which I keep strung as a full 12 String 6 Course instrument in Turkish Tuning from the Hal Leonard Oud Method and with Thomastik Infeld Strings, tied onto bridge beads to get a better break angle over the saddle. It also has Machine head tuners for easier tuning and it puts the strings at a steeper angle over the nut.
I'm a white American with no connection to anything or anyone Arabic, but I do LOVE the sound of the oud! Someday I will save up money to get one. Thank you for sharing this!
I would like to thank you so much for many reasons. One of them that I recently moved to another country far form my Syria where I enjoyed starting my chilhoods dream, palying the oud, now I am without any source of information and your videos which I found right now is very helpful. Thanks again from all my heart. I will follow the instructions for every lesson, but could I ask you in case some difficulties face me. If you have any special advice I will be grateful. With my best wishes. Shadi
Salam, this is wonderful I bought one for my dad as a gift. I'll give him these videos as well. We live in the US so I was worried about finding lessons for him. BTW if you guys can find a ربابة instructor and connect me with them that would be great I'd pay for that in a heart beat.
Thank u much! I've looked at other videos on lessons and they are either not in English or assume that everyone knows the solfage for naming the notes!!
You did not mention the strings on the first 4. Also the angle of the camera is very poor, because all we see in your hand not the pick plucking the strings. Interesting lesson thoug.
Hi Tarek! Sorry if this has been asked before! Are all the lessons this short? I am really interested in the lessons, but I am a bit hesitant. I am not sure if 3-7 min lessons are enough to cover the material (I only watched Lesson 1 and 2)... (?) What should I expect at the end of the course? Also, do you offer any follow-up courses? Thank you!
Hey i want to buy an Oud and start learning how to play. But i don't know where to buy it from and what type i should buy. I want a good quality one. Reply to this if you don't mind. Thanks!!
Hi, you can download an app. on your mobile phone called "Pano Tuner" then adjust all the strings starting from below. Some Oud instruments have 5 strings and some have 6 .. You will adjust each string separately but make sure Double-strings take the same tone symbol; at the app in (i) button you can choose tone symbols to be (A,B,C) or (Do, Re, Mi); i will assume you use ABC: now start to adjust the first double-string (the most below one) on C, then the second on G, then D, A, G and C. If you choose Do Re Mi symbols, the order will be: Do, Sol, Re, La, Sol, Do. If your Oud has only 5 strings simply ignore (the last C or Do). Remember: Count from below!
Hello, I am learning Oud right now. Thank you for uploading this video. I have been having problems with my pegs not staying in the position I turn them to, they seem to resist this tuning. Do you have any advice to make them stick to where I turn them?

It's my first time to learn this instrument.

Hello, please can you advice me what is a good beginner oud to buy ?
Hi, please email us on: izif@izif.com
You’re missing a sixth string which is used as a base. My Turkish Oud has 6 strings with 5 being double stringed
You did not mention the strings on the first 4. Also the angle of the camera is very poor, because all we see in your hand not the pick plucking the strings. Interesting lesson thoug.

arapca bilmiyorum
I was told it was a Greek instrument.
Ya Boi
It probably is, but it’s used by middle eastern cultures. I’ve heard many Jewish songs that have it incorporated.
The Greek one is longer
It is used in many traditional African and Middle Eastern cultures. Used in Sudan, Somalia, Algeria, Maroc, (Chad/Nigeria/Niger? Unsure)
It can be both, as well as Jewish, Armenian, Turkish, Persian, Aramaic, ...etc.
Nobody holds a monopoly on cultural aspects like cuisine and music :)
Something about this guy sickens me…. Not sure what…
nice
