- When I graduated I had no idea what salary to advocate for and felt too nervous to ask my colleages how much money they make. Today I outline exactly how much money I made in my first 3 years as a clinical psychologist and I hope this video gives you an insight into what you can be expecting both in public health and private practice settings in Australia. Would love to hear your thoughts or questions!

School Counsellor/ school psych salaries in NSW have gone up significantly recently and you only need general registration - definitely worth looking into for those who want to work with children and teenagers
By general registration do you mean bachelors :))
@@hy923 No, you need to at least 2 years more study/training after finishing your 4 year undergraduate degree
the most challenging part is to get into Dep of Education
@@hy923 You need do complete BPsych(Hons) and 1 year of master, 1 year of internship plus national exam
Im currently doing computer science engineering and im planning to change to psychology? Whats your opinion? Will that be a bad decision
That was a great video! Super helpful. Thank you for being so transparent 😊.
Amazing video Ro, love the transparency 😊 Just shared this with my fellow 1st year Clin psychs at MQ x
Thank you so much for this amazing video!! highly informative and transparent, and so helpful for those of us currently studying to become a psych.
Thanks for sharing! It was great to hear a realistic perspective on income. I'd imagine it's similar to other allied health professions too in private practice. It's awesome though that you have the flexibility to work when and how much you want though, am also a casual worker in my field in Australia (thinking of transitioning to allied health in the future as well!) and am loving the flexibility too of working either 1 or 5 days a week. For me I realised as well as a young person more money doesn't equate happiness and that at the end of the day it's important to be grateful for what you have and to take care of yourself so that you don't burn-out, as you are only one you. Thanks for sharing Ro! :)
Thank you for sharing, greatly appreciated :D
Canadian Registered Psychotherapist (RP) here 🙋🏻♀️ with very similar experience. Thanks for sharing this Ro :) I so feel you on the peace of mind that comes with having a part-time industry job
Love your videos ☺☺ I'm a Korean student planning to study in Aus and this really helps tysm 🥺👍
Im really into finance and im getting my LMHC right now. And after im going for my clinical psych. So this was very helpful
That table is so crazy because I feel like most gen psychs are on far higher salaries. I’m a prov (close to full reg) and I’m on close to $100k. The first psych job I had was less than 30k (casual), so it really fluctuates 😚 I currently work in private practice doing assessment.
a quick question if you don't mind! is this pre or post tax?
Usually those tables show an award salary which is the absolute MINIMUM each level can get paid legally (this exists for every industry I believe). So yes, it’s very possible the actual average is much higher, especially because psychologists are very much in demand and negotiations with an employer are definitely possible.
Heyy, where did you do the UG or how much did it cost u overall for the 3 year program??

Hi Ro! I've recently come across your videos and I think they're great! Love your own style and your authenticity that you bring! May I ask, do students get paid/ get a salary when they are on the Masters in psychology (Clinical/Clinical Neuropsychology) in Australia?
Thank you!! During my clinical master's I didn't get paid (not sure about neuro) but usually those placements through the uni will be unpaid.
@@thepsychdiaries Thank you! That's helpful to know.
I know that individual universities have scholarships you can apply for which help cover tuition fees but do you know if any student loans (be it for domestic or international students) are available from the Australian government?
You mentioned that you split your time between your role educating teachers etc with private practice working as a psychologist, and I’m also very aware that most clinicians don’t work full time. How do you recommend obtaining essentially two different jobs while you’re still finishing masters? Is that not so stressful? Also curious what the title of your role is (the one where you’re educating staff etc)! I’m new to your channel so not sure if you’ve discussed it in depth in another video :)
Applying for two roles is fairly typical- I started with one clinic and once I got into the swing of things I started looking for the second role. The education role is still as a Clinical Psychologist but just in a different setting :)
Nowadays psychologist salaries are increasing rapidly... back in 2020 when I was deciding for my college major I didn't opted for psychology because of low incomes, I chose business marketing because consumer psychology is huge part of it. But now I'm regretting not taking Psychology which was my passion 💔
Hi. I am a new subscriber from Philippines and a 4 year practitioner/Clinical Psychologist. Do you have videos on pathway for a skilled migrant?
If we had the chance to shape a private community with Ro, what would you want it to include? Let's share our wishlist!
I just graduated from high school and I was thinking to continue my study in psychologist :> idk if it's a good choice for me :>
Heyy, Id really like to know bout the changed pathway. Is it 4 yrs of Bachleor and another 4 yr to become clinical psychologist?? Or is it still the same 4yr + 2yr of masters
So real hahah love it! Is there a reason why psych private practices don’t just charge for people that don’t show up? Bc they might lose clients?
It depends based on clinic, some have very strict rules. Most of time when we waive the cancellation it's because the client has something personal going on- last minute parents having to attend to children or they're sick or so overwhelmed they're losing track of appointments. But if it becomes a pattern we do end up charging.
Im currently doing computer science engineering and im planning to change to psychology? Whats your opinion? Will that be a bad decision?
My best friend is working as an early childhood educator and she's been working full time for about 2-3 years now, and now she is a manager. Her salary is higher than Psychologist who has 4th year of experience. She only did 4 year degree, while psych is doing 6-7 years and earn less than that. My colleagues who are working as speech pathologist also earns almost as much or even higher than Psych. Very disappointing.

@@Jeeromin_ if you really passionate about helping people and commit to it. It could take you 6 years or more to become a registered psych. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend as it’s so exhausting and competitive
$77k and $79k will be after you've deducted a lot of business expenses and super though so probably more like $120k+ I imagine
would there be one of those award documents for Queensland? where did you find it?
Hmm I tried googling 'queensland psychologist health award' but I found two separate PDFs might need to dig but it should be available online!
I have bachelor degree in science without psychology as a subject now i want to become a clinical psychologist in australia but as my stream is different what would be the best pathway for me/ would i be able to become a clinical psychologist with a unrelated degree??🤔
Please reply!
It depends! Check out my video about pathways to becoming a psych and it'll explain how to check if your degree is compatible :)
@@thepsychdiaries ok thankyou🤗
From my understanding you can do a post grad certificate in psychology/ psychological science and go for the honours or something like that, you'd have to speak to your university about your pathway
@@leapingdeer7880 kk so u mean to say that i should complete my masters from my country too?
77k taxable income in your first year? so take home would be around 58k? that's incredibly low after all the years of study :( i get so demotivated
Yea it suprised me too... though I have to say I definitely wasn't on top of my accounting (in terms of reporting deductible business expenses etc) and I'm sure many of my peers were doing better. There would probably be better ways to approach finances but it definitely doesn't come naturally to me haha
I know getting into masters is the big bottleneck, but once you do; how difficult is it to get a salaried role?
Depends what area :) salaried roles first year out are very competitive just because there are few positions available (I couldn't find one even after trying for a few months). But if you have the ability to work a bit more niche there's a higher chance and especially if you're able to work more regional or rural theres more options.
@@thepsychdiaries thanks Ro!
Woohoo
