Love your directness. Your explanations are concise and seem very authentic. Other UA-camrs tend to labour their presentation style but I appreciate how you just get on with the job. Great work my friend, thank you 👍
Love this. I have always been nearly criticized for my directness in general but I 100% agree with you, I consume a ton of youtube content and sometimes it's painful to sit through a 10 minute video that could have been under 1 minute. I appreciate it a lot, have a great week!

This was hands down the most helpful video on internal linking in Obsidian I saw until this date. THANK YOU! :-)
As a soon to be computer science student I need a good note taking app to put all my ideas somewhere and I think I am going to try Obsidian 🥰🥰🥰 There is a lot to learn for sure!
That's great, glad you enjoyed it, I do the same, I also have a markdown syntax page in my vault that I refer to from time to time, it's really helpful!
Very cool, thanks. I subscribed to your channel precisely because of the topic of studying Obsidian. And I like your presentation of information, you speak very clearly and without unnecessary fluff, very clear and specific things with clear examples and precise explanations.
Thank you sir! I'm new to Obsidian, and this really helped alot with markdown syntax. What's interesting is that you can actually embed links, which is a pretty useful feature overall
This is exactly what I need to optimise linking in Obsidian. Thank you so much for your straightforward tutorial! Great work! I will refer back to this video many more times.
Thank you for explaining all these useful syntaxes, one thing i learned is that there's a plugin called (Footnote shortcut) which might hep you get rid of the friction you mentioned in ( 11:02 ) as it puts the cursor right over the footnote after creation . but in my honest opinion I myself prefer your way (to define the footnote right after the thing we write and not at the bottom of the page).
*TIP* : 11:00 Actually, you don't have to come all the way down at all for the footnote using the [^1] [^1]: add footnote definition method. You can literally type type the definition on the next line, and Obsidian will move it all the way down automatically in Reading mode.
FYI, you can put non-inline footnotes wherever. You don't need to put them at the bottom of the page. Either way, they will show up at the bottom in reading mode. And you can give each footnote a meaningful name instead of calling them 1, 2, 3, etc. The numbering shown in reading mode is automatic anyway, so the numbers you specify are meaningless. You can call it footnote 72, but if it's the first one on the page, it'll be called 1 in reading mode.
Thanks for all the tips! Most of what you covered here aren't in others' tutorials. I especially like the "Advanced Linking, Aliases" part! I made navigation bars like in Wikipedia for some of my lists.
An efficiency note when linking to headers: When it drops down the list, highlight the one you want and hit tab. It will autofill with it and leave you inside the double brackets so you can follow up with a # or whatever instead of having to go back into the brackets to complete the link.
I write exclusively in source mode, so I LOVE that they show you the formatting even in source. I really hate markdown, but I have to use it everywhere and pretty much always have since it took over html as the webs main customization language. Being able to write in source but have it show me everything with the syntax is a lifesaver, and a feature I'll never do without now.
I'm particularly fond of Dataview! Definitely not an "essential" plugin for the majority of people but for those that take advantage of it, it takes obsidian to the next level! Hopefully I have that one ready in a couple of weeks!
Hi Sergio. I'm back! I went to Evernote (like a dummy) - but they've made impossible to stay with them. So it's "Obsidian all the way!" (and your videos) for me. The reason I left is because of the way that Obsidian handles publishing of the vaults. I'm developing workarounds to make it happen with Obsidian..
Nice summary 👍 9:36 - for some reason that first approach for footnotes doesn't render quite the same for me, it doesn't have the arrow button or a superscript footnote link (renders as "This is a footnote1" in read mode). The second approach works great though
@@FromSergio no change with live preview off, however just had a closer look at your example and it turns out it wasn't working because I had put "Footnotes:" on the line immediately before the footnote definitions. Looks like it only works if the footnotes section is separated with an empty line
it does not work for me though, and I have a line of space after each line of text:( Edit: it does work if the second method is used: This is a footnote^[Definition of footnote]
amazing videos, you sold me on the app. I am still a bit confused about how does the whole thing work. More specifically, how do I keep track of citations and references? Thank you
This is much better if you could just highlight words with your cursor then a prompt would pop up to replace it with another syntax. Just like how notion does it. Or is there a new community plugin for this?
There is actually. Simply select the text you want to turn bold or italic and press CMD(or CTRL) + B to turn it bold, and CMD + I for italics. Hope this helps!
Is there any way to reference specific keywords of a text? Example I want a note to show how many times the word "Frog" appears and where they are in a text which is written in another note.
I have a list of things under a header called # List 1. Is there a shortcut command to extract this list to another note without having to copy and paste? I'm on my mobile 95% of the time. Only on my laptop 1-3 times a month. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Excellent video. Is there a way to get automated Table of Contents an outline of note based on Headers? Or do I have to create that manually with double brackets?
that was heavy and i dont really think ill ever use half of it but thanks at least i now know how to do things i really wanted to do like showing specific parts of a note instead of the entire note with the ![[ ]] thing
Yup I'm aware it was a lot, it was intended to be a video to be referenced whenever you want to use more specific markdown syntax as well as a video providing a solid base!
@@FromSergio i love the fact that i thought the syntax was a lot before watching the video about dataview haha Now it look like kid stuff in comparison 😂 i guess I should not do everything in one go haha
I am a macOS user, there are some differences, especially now with version 1. I am new to Obsidian and was greatly confused why I couldn't get the checklist to work. The keys won't work now for us, use Command + L. Even then I can't make rows of checklist or even columns of checklist.
Is there not a way to display a formatting ribbon of tools like every other editor ever? I want to use this but I'm not a programmer or want to memorize a bunch of hidden commands for simple things like alignment/bold/boxes/etc..
Thanks FromSergio for your extremely helpful videos. Cristiano, the caret symbol ^ from the keyboard set which I must use ("U.S."), is not the same character that Obsidian needs for this to work (although they look almost identical). I changed momentarily to another keyboard set (on the Mac: System Preferences > Keyboards > "U.S. International - PC") and it worked. I copied and pasted the correct caret symbol ^ into an Obsidian starred note (easily accessible), and returned the keyboard set to "U.S.". I paste this character every time I need to create footnotes - it's a bit time consuming but it works. (I don't know yet how to create a shortcut in Alfred or Keyboard Maestro to input this character in Obsidian, but it is certainly possible). I runned into another problem today (probably also related to my limited knowledge). After watching this video I learned that a plugin isn't necessary to create footnotes, so I uninstalled the plugin which I had previously used. (Unfortunately, I was in a hurry and can't remember it's name). The problem is that although I can see older footnotes in Preview Mode (created months ago with that plugin), I can't edit these older footnotes anymore. They don't even appear in Edit Mode - although in Preview Mode their numbering updates correctly to accommodate newly created footnotes (those created today, after the plugin was uninstalled). The new footnotes seem to be working fine. I'd like to extensively use footnotes in Obsidian from now on. Please, am I right to think that this function is already very solid, even without any special plugin being needed? (The footnotes I created in the past are not important - they were mere tests). Thank you very much, everyone.
Quick note: in newer Obsidian versions, to create a checklist (at least on Windows), you'll need to press **CTRL+L** instead of **CTRL+Enter key**
This behavior can be changed to whatever combo you'd like to use if you go to "Settings > Hotkeys > Toggle checkbox status"
