I know that Maomao actually acted correctly considering the time period and whatnot, but it ALWAYS irks me when the MC gets bullied(specially for something dumb like someone's pride) and the MC can't and/or won't fight back and enact punishment towards those that tried to harm them. I guess I'm just tired of stories with bullying where the victim of it is expected to endure it and hope that the other person/people simply get their punishment one day.Because this tends to happen A LOT in real life, so it would be nice to see stories where not only the bully is punished right away but it's punished by the hands of the victim.
The best revenge is a life well lived. Often people who seek revenge become the villains. I've read plenty of storied where MC's seek revenge to the point of becoming as bad as their previous wrong doers. For this story, I suppose the realistic expection would be to wait for Maomao to get promoted (let's be honest, she will be promoted at some point) and then she'll have her own authority to keep bullies at bay.
There might be more to it than you think. In Chinese culture, your family members could get punished for your actions, so MaoMao could also be protecting her father.

I’m a little annoyed with the changes made to this episode, especially because this scene really makes more sense in the original, when she’d already failed the court lady exam and started working as Jinshi’s personal maid. In general, I don’t think the exam worked well as an episode-long plot, as opposed to her failing it being the first we hear about it. Getting a full scene of Maomao in that courtesan getup was fun, though.
