I love the way Jack Lemmon announces their names. A veteran actor proud to give two newcomers their first Oscar.
Yeah, in hindsignt, they probably should have known. Jack Lemmon too was from Boston, and too was a Harvard alumni. The two connections shared with those two young kids (Affleck didn't attend Harvard, but Damon did, and Affleck has generations of ties with that university). It seems it was the Academy's way of passing the parcel.

Can you imagine receiving an award, a roll of Charmin, a jar of mayonnaise, anything, from one of the most skillful, respected, honored, and beloved actors in America, Jack Lemmon, not to leave out Matthau. What is so sweet about it that you hardly thought about then but think about now is how a couple of times on clips when Robin embraces him it is all "respectful" and as soon as Matt realizes he is embracing him he returns it 100 fold! ALA during this clip of them going up. Matt is like gung ho! Golly gee whiz these guy couldn't act mature if they tried. This is the best Oscar moment ever for me, two young kids (who are childhood best friends) win an Oscar with their moms as their dates. Love it. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are legends. And what careers they've gone on to have.

I remember watching the Academy Awards on that night...all the way through, because I wanted Matt Damon to win for best actor OR to get this award. I think seeing these two win is the only time I have been really excited about an Academy Award. I was so happy that these two young guys won. It was so well deserved. The writing was brilliant. They were so darn cute. Thank you so much for posting this wonderful memory.

My earliest memory (around 10yrs old) of watching the Oscars and always remembering these two young guys and their undeniable enthusiasm. So inspiring, it's never left me all these years later. To this day I am an avid fan of their work.
