    The thing is, Chess was invented in India. The Chaturanga, as it was known, had pieces based on real-life military of Gupta Empire (where the game was created). Which were King, Minister, Elephant, Cavalry, Chariot and Infantry.
    But as state of warfare (and tactics) changed in India, chess pieces of India changed too. The "elephant", who used to be the bishop, now became the rook. Chariot was removed entirely. Camels became common in Indian armies, and thus took the place of Bishop. Minister remained unchanged in name.
    So even with newer rules and moves, Indians use the ancient form of the names. After all, we invented it.

      Yes, most people believe that chess began in India. Certainly the name Chaturanga is Indian, and the original names of pieces represent divisions of an ancient army.

      @@AncientChessur language sounds a bit manipulative, chess was invented in India.

    nice sets
    it makes more logic since chess is a war game and in history we dont see queens and bishops get involved in battles
    minister and camels make more sense .
    also rooks (elephants here) towers in euro version ,i think they was chariots in ancient persian chess
    i think the indian pieces are the best

      Thanks for the message. The best way to contact me is through the website AncientChess.com (contact link). Once you send a message there, we can start corresponding by email. The sets you see in this video are not actually antique. They are hand made in India, within the past few years, in traditional styles.

    Dear Rick, do you know where one could buy a wooden board that is not chekcered. I always want to play chess on non checkered, monochrome board such as used in Shogi and Makruk. The squares were put there to estimate and calculate movies easier, and specifically for elephants as far as I know. But it seems thats something that the player should learn to estimate without the aid of the squares. But in either case I don't like checkered squares.

      +StopFear I'm trying to get a good source for boards like that. I used to get them from India, but there was too much expense and damage in transport. It may be a while before I have them .. but check my listings or ask me any time. I do have one board which is quite nice, but has a visible line where two boards came together to make the board -- I think it's still very good but couldn't sell it on eBay because of the 'imperfection'. If you're interested, contact me through my web site and I'll send you a picture. It's got 2 inch squares. I also have a similar board with the long diagonals marked, intended for burmese chess -- let me know if that interests you as well

    Yes, that was a major change when chess came to Europe. It changed from a battlefield lineup to more of a political lineup. It's true, the old rook was a chariot, sometimes a boat, and even in Europe old rooks were often princes or remote generals. A very interesting change.

      @drazini 6 років тому +1

      This is a traditional Indian playing mat. If you contact Rick at ancientchess.com, he can get you one. He also has them in the ancient 'ashtapada' style, with "X" markings on on 16 squares, including the corners

    India is where chess was invented.... it was called chaturanga.... or shatranj.....

    • @TonyJones090
      @TonyJones090 7 років тому

      Well, there is also the story about the Chinese inventing chess

    • @TheFactbase
      @TheFactbase 7 років тому +2

      Tony Jones Chinese is much younger civilization than India... Secondly it's not a story.... Chess or chaturanga was invented in India and traveled through to Persia and Arabia where it was taken up by Europeans.... It travel through to Japan where it charged form.... And finally taken up by Chinese....

    • @TonyJones090
      @TonyJones090 7 років тому

      I knew it was not a story, I just put it like that, but I thanks for telling me about my error

    • @TheFactbase
      @TheFactbase 7 років тому +1

      Tony Jones chess in its earliest form was very different.... The pieces were elaborate, complete with swords and chariots.... The abstract representations emerged in Persia...... where Islam religion did not allow depictions of human figurines.... Lot of changes such as introduction of the Bishop, etc were made in the European circles.....

    Lolz, the spearing the tiger is not meant to be taken literally.It's symbolic. Doubt anyone is going to see the comment though.

      +Smitty Werbenjagermanjensen -- Hey, it's a symbolic game, right? Killing the king, killing all his guys to get to him ... why not do a little tiger hunting on the side?

    You have probably pronounced a wrong name. This game is called ( Chaturanga: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaturanga )

    • @AncientChess
      @AncientChess  6 років тому

      I'm not sure exactly which part of the video you're responding to. You'll find a great deal of information about this entire question of chess history, including chaturanga of course, in our comprehensive book, seen at aworldofchess.com.
      What I would most like to know from you is where you are located (where in India), and what sort of games you have seen played in your area -- the moves, the sets, whatever you can tell us. It is hard to find first-hand eye-witness accounts of chess as it is played outside of the standard international. What do you see in your area?

    • @AncientChess
      @AncientChess  5 років тому

      Chaturanga was the original pronunciation, then shortened as Chatrang, then, when adapted by the Arab nations, which had a different phonetic system, converted to Shatranj. It is 'shatranj' that is most widely spread, and still used as the word for 'chess' today in many languages. All words basically referred to the same game, with small regional differences in rules.
