Flying Florida to Cedar Key Florida - Light Sport Pilot 003(4K) - N234YP - TL Sting S3

  • This is the first video in series, from our week of circumnavigating Florida. We started in Pensacola, and then flew to Perry Florida and stayed the night. This video follows along as we return the courtesy car after waking up in Perry Florida. We prep N234YP, load our bags, do the checklist, and embark on our adventure to Cedar Key for the afternoon. Cedar Key is a beautiful little town, with friendly people, good food, plenty of touristy adventure, and a very unique airport... lots to explore!
    In future videos, we will continue on from Cedar Key(KCDK), make a stop at Crystal River(KCGC) for fuel, then on to Arcadia(X06). Then on to Key West International(KEYW) to spend a few days to explore the area! Then we come back up the entire Atlantic Coast of Florida to Jacksonville. Finally, we will fly from Jacksonville, Florida back home to Nashville Tennessee. Subscribe to watch the full series.
    Sadly, for technical reasons, we were NOT able to record cockpit audio, so this series of vides will be edited as music cuts instead of reality style.

    Cool video. FYI: Cleaning the canopy, swirling the rag will lead to "sun swirl" reflections. Only pull the rag in the direction of the air flow. Better for the life of your windshield. 😏

    Welcome to the world of the Sting S3! Beautifully done video - I'm impressed!
    A couple of quick notes, on things I noticed:
    1. On both legs, you forgot to close the center canopy latch, behind your head.
    2. At 24.3" MAP, 4940 seems like an awfully low RPM. The fuel flow is consistent with the MAP. How's your prop pitch? [Later edit: alternatively, at that MAP, RPM and altitude, the fuel flow seems very high.]
    3. You have your passengers close the right-hand canopy latch. FWIW, I don't: I close it myself. If it pops open in flight, you won't be able to re-close it.

      Hi Finbar. Thanks for the response and the nice comments.
      So, this was literally our first trip in N234YP. It was also our first experience taking off when it was really hot on the tarmac/taxiway in the Florida heat. Leaving the canopy open while in taxi was required for a happy wife. We have addressed the canopy latch oversight on takeoff. Locking the canopy is on our checklist, but doesn't remind about the back latch.
      I was told that on most S3's , the canopy ends up a little wider than the body and you have to finesse it to get the pins to line up. Luckily, ours has near perfect alignment, and will line up, click and lock in the air, although I don't wanna try it again... haha.
      I figured someone would catch that in the video, as i did when editing.
      I haven't met anyone else besides the previous owner that has or even knows this plane. Not sure about the prop pitch. The prop is new. It was installed and pitched by the A&P at Sportair in LittleRock during its annual just before this trip. This plane has had an ongoing issue with oil temp running high under load esp takeoff and climbs on hot days. I have had the oil cooler purged. Still trying to solve the issue. I have read that it could be the pitch is to great and loads the engine too much. Not a problem in wintertime in Tennessee where I live. but in summer in Florida, I had to watch the oil temp and slow the climbs pitch on every take
      off. I do like the top speed. It will easily go 125kn level flight at 5200RPM at 5000 ft no wind.
      Any knowledge on the oil temp issue would be greatly appreciated.

      @@lightsportpilotadventures We live and learn (and learn and live!). No doubt you'd have notes for me, if I had such beautiful videos posted!
      If it's helpful for checking your prop pitch / fuel flow calibration, at 4,500' I recently recorded MAP of 23.1, 5270 RPM, 4.9 gph. At 5,500' I recorded MAP of 22.1, 5360 RPM, 4.5 gph. My fuel flow isn't completely calibrated yet, but it's not very far wrong.
      Is 5200 RPM as high as it will go (wide open throttle) at 5000 ft? If so, yes, from what I've gathered your prop pitch is too coarse. Roger Lee, a Rotax mechanic who's posted quite a bit on this topic, says you want to shoot for 5600 RPM or so, wide open throttle, at your normal cruising altitude (obviously you want to pull it back to under 5500 RPM in cruise, that being the max continuous). He says if you have the prop set too coarse, it hurts fuel consumption and doesn't add much, if any, speed. Mine gets somewhere a hair north of 5,500 RPM wide open at 6,500'.
      I have seen overheating issues in another Sting, in Texas on a hot day. That said, I know the owner and he hasn't had any problem with that since then.
      Yes, I own N770L, a Sting S3, s/n 169. Mine is an ELSA, equipped with VOR/ILS. Apart from the somewhat limited baggage space, it's a great machine and - as you're demonstrating - very capable of traveling. I've flown mine from Marion County FL to California, where I'm based. And the experience of sitting almost on top of the airplane, surrounded by that huge canopy, is amazing - after that, flying in any of the 1950s GA designs is practically claustrophobic!
      And yes, mine requires some minor wiggling to be sure the canopy sides are latched, on the ground. I haven't tried it in flight and don't plan to: I had a canopy latch failure in an Evektor SportStar years ago, and learned that tip-up canopies make fantastically effective airbrakes, and also widen out in the airflow so that they can be effectively impossible to re-close even if you can pull them down far enough (we wound up landing with the canopy open, one of us flying while the other held the canopy down as much as possible).
      Possibly helpful tip: use the pilot-side canopy latch as the place to hang the parachute safety pin. That way, you won't leave the parachute unsecured when you get out.

    I am interested in the more technical aspects of operating your LSA, if you ever decided to make a video like that, I would enjoy it. However I know video editing takes a lot of time and effort so if that's a type of video you're not interested in making, I understand.

      @@lightsportpilotadventures I would second @jimBronson comment for a technical video. I noticed many of the airports on your Fl. adventure only supplied 100LL and not the Rotax-recommended MoGas. Using 100LL requires more frequent maintenance. Your perspective on this (and other Rotax thoughts) would add an interesting aspect to your "technical video". Very much enjoying your Florida series.
      I am routing that you sort out the cockpit audio soon. It would add a lot to your already great videos.

      ​@@john9663Yes, for sure when you travel in a Rotax powered airplane, you end up putting in AvGas100LL more often than not. I have a ritual of changing my oil at 25 hours regardless of my use or non use of MoGas 91, just to lower the possibility of engine wear from lead in the oil. I buy the oil and Rotax Filters by the case, and I change the oil myself.
      I did add cockpit audio in the later new videos (OshKosh Trip), and also added some "thought bubbles", over the video telling the viewer what I was thinking while flying. I will continue with cockpit audio, but not sure how much at this point. I am not the best "on air talent", but am working up to the challenge of having dialog in the mix of the stories.       I will think about a "technical aspects video" a little more, and come up with something to fit that need. In the mean time, the previous owner of my plane Jason Ausman has done a few UA-cam videos talking about the specs and equipment that is in N234YP. Nothing has changed in that regard, and also there is a UA-camr named Richard DeHaven, that has many videos about his Sting S3, which is the same plane as mine. His channel is called "Sting Flight"

    Flying a drone over an airport - is your Part107 license not at risk if FAA sees this?

      Hi Whiskey Romeo Bravo. I did everything within the rules. Permission to fly, geo-unlocked my FAA Registered drone, monitored air traffic radio, and ADS-B, and maintained safety and distance from any air traffic, which there was none while flying the drone. It was legal, however, even if I was legal to fly, I would not have flown the drone if there was any present air traffic, and I would not risk flying a drone in Controlled Airspace, CLASS D-C-B without authorization prior to flying. www.faa.gov/uas/getting_started/where_can_i_fly/airspace_restrictions/flying_near_airports

      That nice Canopy Shade can be added to the S4 of course : Previous owner had it installed in ours. Seems Florida flying would require it, at least for my genetic lack of melanin, lol.

      @@lightsportpilotadventures nice.. i just got back from my cross country flight with the instructor.. only went from ded to 28j (palatka), but was a nice 2 hour flight considering i havent been able to fly for a month or two cus work ..... but my goal is to go down to arcadia for taco-tuesday once they got themselves situation after the storm.

      Hi Greg, thanks for the kind words. We had just purchased this airplane before this trip, and I didn't have the Comm Audio cable wired correctly to the cameras, so we didn't get any "Airplane Audio" during the Florida trip. However, I have fixed it since then. Some of the other videos have comm audio recorded. Thanks for the complements on the drone shots mixed in. It is also my first drone, the DJI Mini 3, and I am learning how to and "what" to do with it as we go. Obviously, flying a drone around an airport takes some common sense, obeying FAA rules, and getting the permissions to do so. I won't be able to fly drone at most airports, but the smaller ones with low air traffic, for sure, as long as it's done safe and I monitor air traffic while flying it. Glad you like it. Spread the word, and keep watching! I plan on continuing making videos of our adventures as long as I can. My wife and I love flying, meeting new people, and visiting new places.
