  • Alfonso Cuarón, in addition to serving as writer, director, and producer, was also the DP on best picture nominee “Roma.” For Variety‘s Artisans series, he explained why he knew the movie couldn’t be “a nostalgic, old-school black and white.”

    The first 30 minutes, I was like , 'where is this movie going?' But Alfonso is such a master storyteller and exceptional photographer that by the end of a 2:30 hour movie , I was sad it was over. It was so relaxing, like being at a museum all day enjoying wonderful works of art. Instant classic.

      Absolutely, I realized after a while how brilliantly Cuarón managed the opening and final shot of the film, its symmetry. The opening shot is a look of the camera watching from above to a dirty floor then we hear Cleo going down from the metal staircase, then she fill up a bucket with water and she pour it in the floor and we see the reflection of the sky while she starts cleaning, opening credits roll and then we see a reflection of a plane crossing the frame; once the opening title fades the camera moves so to be level up and parallel to the ground. On the other hand, the final shot or scene is the camera parallel to the ground, Cleo has a sheet with dirty clothes and the starts to going upstairs, the camera watch from below until we no longer see the reflection of the sky but the real one and final credits roll and the dedication for his nanny "Libo" the real Cleo.

      relaxing? really? I thought it was one of the most emotionally taxing movies I've ever seen. I've needed recovery time after my two watches. I guess the story might hit close to home in my case.

      Federico Hosiasson relaxing visually speaking as well as the pace and the long master shots with a languid pan. But yeah a few scenes were absolutely heartbreaking. It was the kind of movie I thought about days after. It was refreshing to see a film that did feel that it had to control EVERYTHING I saw. He gave you the opportunity to see what YOU wanted to see. That’s what I meant about sad that it ended. The actress that played Cleo was given the best direction but had perfect instincts that we all felt. A very subtle performance so when the hard scene came it hit super hard. She made me cry twice. I don’t cry watching movies.

    Probably the single greatest scene I've ever witnessed in my 50 years of movie watching. The huddle is emotionally divine and utterly cathartic. I cried both times I saw it. So much is said in just that one hug and the things they were all saying, especially Cleo's saying she was hoping her baby would have died. This is exactly how you turn little things into big things. Lesson for screenwriters everywhere. And only a genius like Cuaron could follow this great scene with an equally iconic one: Cleo in the car looking out the window, classically shot for the ages. No one will ever be able to forget the look of content on her face. She is the hero, finally. And the image could not have conveyed it more effectively.
    And the Oscar goes to......Green Book.

      Yes I was waiting for a breakdown of the scene, is clear that the movie has a lot of cg work in it (in the city scenes was clear) and he is trying to hide the fact that he use cg because it may low that " artistic " quality of the film, but this scene has more cg that he is admitting here, hopefully i'm wrong.

    • @lauraguerra6450
      @lauraguerra6450 5 років тому +3

      @@JoseMarioLagos if we consider what the actors and himself have said in many interviews, this shot was the only one he could get after a day of several attempts where the crane kept on derailing. Between takes Cuaron kept giving different instructions to each actor to keep things fresh and so actors knew that with every new take there was likely to be surprises there. Yalitza has said that she was actually worried by the children, cause at many points she could not see where they were, she saw that the team supposed to take care of the kids in the water did not react so her concern for the kids grew more and more... So we can infer that if there is cg in the shot that does not include the actors, nor the ocean. From the actors' perspective the scene included it all: ocean, waves, kids in the water that cannot be easily seen, finding them, taking them out of the water and so forth.

    • @JoseMarioLagos
      @JoseMarioLagos 5 років тому +1

      @@lauraguerra6450 i understand, most probably there are different shots that the vfx artist put together in one shot, some of the front waves are CG and were a little bit obvious for a trained eye, you cannot have waves that tall without hitting the lens or obscure the camera exposure, so there is some complex compositing going on, I'm not saying that its bad, just curious about the process Cuaron likes to use a lot of CG and complex compositing, I work in vfx for tv commercials so I'm curious, this interview doesn't say anything sadly, amazing shot and movie regardless of the technique.

    Increible como esta escena nos parezca tan fascinante e impactante, tal vez sea porque el cine de Hollywood es tan artificial y postizo que es imposible ver una escena como esta en sus peliculas, aqui ves una imagen verdadera y pura del mar, es tan realista todo que uno se queda perplejo viendo las olas, siente miedo al ver a cleo y a los niños intentando salir de las aguas, en Hollywood el mar no se ve ni se siente tan real, incluso podria decirse que muchas escenas como esta tal vez los gringos las hacen con puro CGI.

    He said he reshot with 3 stops down. But, even with motion control, how the same footage is going to be shot?

    No es una escena, es toda la peli, pero esa escena del mar quedará para la posteridad como el travelling majestuoso de Welles al inicio de Sed de mal. Como testimonio de qué bello es el cine.

    I wonder if that shooting scene where they are all lined up shooting the guns are a homage to the shooting scene in Wes Anderson's film Bottle Rocket... Anyone speculate the same thing?

    You see he is my age and I do recall that color was every where in those days thr olimpic games the world cup thw color films and 35mm kodak chrome slides photograps, the Sunday newspappers with color pictures
    That time I do belive was not in gray scale it was color every where I suspect that Añfonso s life was touched diferently to mine and gray scale is what defines that particular period in his life, may be that touch adds up to the autor ship of this master piece
