I interesting video Troy , not great to leave the hooks in to be honest tho , we used to use circle hooks when we did mono trots or longlines an never had a problem at all , hooks don’t rust out for weeks or even months sometimes , just leave a hook in salt water as see how long it takes , no hate at all mate just a few tips as iv done a lot of this in the past an theres better practices for it , very interesting video tho
I am surprised you have not used these hooks before most of the tips and barbs rust off if they are left in salt water within 24hrs. I thought they were a terrible hooks when I first used them as I had to replace most of the hooks if I left the longlines out all night. Turns out they are ideal for this. Attempting to remove some of the hooks would have been far worse practice and caused a lot more damage even death. Circle hooks are ok I remember the French used to use them on longlines but better for fish that bolt such as bass as they will pull into the corner of the mouth. Things like conger & dogfish will tend to just sit on the bait and just swallow the hooks. In the end only a few fish had hooks in that were returned as the video was edited. Like I said we had 5 congers and 6 huss but as you can see I did not show all the video as it would have been longer with too much downtime. You may have also noticed we did not use gaffs to land the congers also good practice :)
@@Trojwaterman what brand are the hooks ? I’d like to try them ? There’s been study’s done on CHIN gaffing fish such as conger , tuna , skate in the wings and other species that show it does barley any damage to the fish, it’s we’re you gaff them that makes the difference. There’s pages showing the study’s on it , we’re leaving hooks in fish causes ick on fish that kills them , also fish not feeding due to the hook inside them , as you know it’s not always possible to take every hook out an that’s just something that can’t always be avoided but circle hooks have been used by commercial longlines for years with great effect for all species ! As every fish has to try swim away from the longline they get hooked , that way the gut hooking is almost none , I have friend that are commercial longliners in the uk and France and over hear I can put you in contact with if you would like clarity on the subject mate they have done the same thing though generation of there family’s so there experience is better then most 👍
The hooks came from WSB years ago. Where you gaff a conger maybe but they will spin causing a lot more damage. That conger we took after closer inspection looked like it had been gaffed under the chin and part of the bone had been broken now it seemed to be suffering some kind of infection. I certainly would not gaff a fish I intended to return alive. As for the use of circle hooks I was using a longline and hook traces made up years ago as shown at the start of the video, I had no intention of catching a lot of bullhuss or conger. Usually on a longline that size it would be 1 or 2 congers and possibly 1 huss at most. I made the best decision at the time as If I had thought those fish would not have survived I would have kept them for food or bait as I always do. As for so called study's I would be very careful putting to much faith in them as many are often made by the large company's catching the fish so will sway toward the best catch rate and not the fishes welfare. I tend to draw off my years of knowledge and experiences but also keep an open mind if I see evidence to the contrary If we solely rely on what study's tell us in the modern world our minds will become closed to the whole picture for example for years we were led to believe diesel fuel was better for the environment.
Hello sir. Great video and wonderful catch! Was wondering if you might do a short video of the details of how you made that longline? Im trying to figure out the details of how to make a short line like that for shark. Thank you so much for sharing this. God bless and good fishing!
Brilliant vidio guys yep mix it up everyone's doing lobsters at mo. What a bullhuss can you please hold it up for the camera next time you catch a awesome fish. Thanks. Keep it up makes my Sunday watching your videos.👍👍👍
Yes I can hold up the fish next time. The weather and tide where getting a bit sketchy in this one so we were in a bit of a rush to get back to calmer waters
Yeah interesting video but not a huge fan of leaving hooks in a fish I know they rust out eventually and sometimes it's definitely the best to cut the line rather than trying to remove the hook, what about using circle hooks which is what they are designed for long lining! No criticism intended just a bit of feedback, looking forward to watching more videos like this one! 😉👍
Nor me I will always remove the hook if possible but when I put lines down years ago the hooks got left out all night one time, by the morning a lot of the tips had rusted off along with the barbs (I still have boxes of them). I knew leaving them in the ones that had swallowed them this time was the best option.

Sorry been out of action. Troy I remember catching what we have on the Pacific Coast which I believe is a Spiny Dogfish. Similar in size to your Bull Huss. Fisheries always told us to keep fish under 24 inches long, because they are a long lived fish and accumulate naturally occurring mercury. Not sure if that is a warning you would need to know. This is not due to pollution, mercury is apparently a product of natural decomp. I have eaten them and they make darned good fish and chips! No bones! Dad used to soak them in baking Soda and water because of course they urinate through their skin. So many people just toss them back or worse yet, damage them and release them, very cruel. I wonder how it keeps in the freezer?
Not for this one we as we were running short of time and the bit of footage I did have I cut from final video. We do have a dogfish prepping on a previous video though : ua-cam.com/video/WKa992Or_Ig/v-deo.html
It would have been interested if you would have carried on and dispatch that bull huss especially skin in it as I would have loved to have seen that people say do this and do that as I in the past did find it very difficult slippery
We gutted it straight away which is important then its skinned/filleted the same way as the lesser dogfish shown in this video : ua-cam.com/video/WKa992Or_Ig/v-deo.html
As a retired longline commercial fisherman, you dont have to use D hooks,or cut hooks off leaving them in the fish, there is a very simple way to remove fish using only your hands, its fast and safe and simple, it has to be to keep up with the hauler with hooks 6 ft apart and no stripper. I dont know if there are any vids showing this but might be worth a look. My comments are nothing more than just passing on experience that might help. Enjoy the vids and I have learned a lot about potting, something I have never done. Good luck and stay safe.
The long line was down for less than 2 hrs how long the fish were hooked for probably not very long all but 2 fish were returned alive. The 2 fish that were kept for food were dispatched soon as the boat footage ended the bull huss has to be gutted straight away or it can taint the flesh.
Bull Huss - as you say these are commonly known as Rock Salmon in our Fish & Chip shops - one of the best fish for kids as these delicious fish have no bones(member of the Cat Shark family). Maybe you should be supplying Guernsy Fish & Chip shops? We have just been eating Smooth Hound - eats like chicken - not as nice as Bull Huss.
That's a bonny crew you have there Troj. Yes, Dogfish this fish is edible and in some cases, even a beloved staple in many dishes. In the form of fillets, many who enjoy eating fish say that this type of fish is delicious and one of their favorites! In addition to being edible and tasty, dogfish is actually quite healthy, too.
Interesting video Troy & Rebecca. I know you have mentioned long lines in the past. I guess with not many quality eating fish, Longlines are not really worth the effort. OK, so you can eat Bull Huss (Rock Salmon) and Conger, but I wouldn't think there is much of a market for Either. A mate who was a Chef was down from London some years back, and he cooked up some Conger steaks - they were Quite tasty, but I've tried to replicate his efforts and wasn't impressed. Great video you two, very interesting seeing the long lining but all your vids are interesting, seeing the huss reminds me I've got one in the freezer, looks like tomorrow's dinner is sorted. My Mum used to cook it in milk but I prefer batter, take care, Norfolk Ray
No I have these wide gape hooks that literally rusting away after one night in the water. When I first saw it I thought it would be a problem re-hooking the lines every time but now its really useful as I rarely use the lines and only lay them for a couple of hours. Circle hooks could be useful but I know conger will just swallow anything. In the past I have even found old bait wires inside them.
