We’ve all been a “victim” (I despise the word) of the rumor mill, so why would we want to help fuel it or even believe it.

His autobiography, The Moon's a Balloon, is essential reading for anyone who has even a glancing interest in the last century's cultural highlights. Thanks for the upload here and God bless Dick Cavett. 🙏

I love the autobiography, a very entertaining book. He must have been devastated when his first wife died. I heard Roger Moore say he (Roger) absolutely did not like David's second wife.

Cavett is such a polite interviewer. Niven isn't there with a prepared script, so is clearly reaching to get the details right. Anyone used to modern chat-show formats would be expecting the host to leap in with their ego running during each of those tiny pauses, but here, Cavett just lets the story unfold naturally. A real gent.
Also, anyone else think the other interviewee may been doing something recreational before going on? Bless her if she was.

These time capsules are great for a peer into a time where people were so well spoken and well mannered. A different breed indeed. Born from hard times and humble beginnings no doubt. It will happen again. Perhaps100 years from now after major wars, economic depressions, pandemics, famine, etc a humble people free of social media/ advertising gimicks will be produced. I believe in my heart it will, hopefully without a need for the cycle to repeat.

It's funny Joan Hackett asking what his sign was. Not only were they both Pisces, they shared the same birthday--March 1st.

Joan Hackett finds out they shared the same birthday (March 1st) but tragically they also both died in the same year, 1983 , 11 years later, she at the far too young age of 49....Mind you notwithstanding that she interrupted David's flawless story telling too much!

do have nothing against the other celebs that were on this show but is this channel ever going to show the Dick Cavett shows where he interviews Jackie Gleason or Art Carney? How about any Honeymooners actors that were part of the main cast? These are rarities much like all the other Dick Cavett interviews

Joan Hackett thot of the same game his story reminded me of. Norman Rockwell did a funny painting of it, also. The studio publicity depts were known to be real cutthroat about oscars.

The studio Heads in those days took no prisoners. Even Eroll Flynn's nomination was "lost" in the mix. Those guys got to where they were by acting like (sophisticated) absolute THUGS. BUT STILL THUGS.
