  • What does bass played with a felt pick sound like? In this video I compare the sound of the felt pick to that of an ordinary pick and fingerstyle. The bass used is a Fender American Standard Precision with D'Addario nickel roundwounds played through an EBS-1 preamp.

    The felt pick weirdly sounded like fingers and a regular pick combined. Nice warm tone like playing with your fingers, but had more presence like a nylon pick without the treble-y scrape. I like it. Might try using one myself sometime. I mostly play guitar but occasionally mess around on bass.

      Yes, I too find them to sound like a mix of fingers and a plastic pick. Be aware that the felt wears down pretty quickly though, especially on roundwounds.

    Can we all just agree that the bass guitar sounded really nice to begin with!

    Definitely warmer than the regular pick, but slightly more presence than just fingers...thanks for sharing!!

    I love the sound the felt picks create. I’m borrowing a bass guitar from a family member, which I have been using the felt picks for that, but mostly use it on my acoustic guitar, whenever I’m playing “I Feel Fine” by The Beatles.

    I really like the felt pick. I've always been a finger player but I now have a permanent injury and I need to find finger sound with a pick. Thank you for the video!

    I’ve used felt picks on bass since I first started playing bass at age 17. I already played guitar from age 13, but when I used my regular picks on the bass, I didn’t like the sound, so I started using felt picks fir the softer sound.
    Then, after studying classical & Flamenco guitar in college at age 21, I started playing bass primarily with my fingers.
    But, I still use picks from time to time on really fast songs & I always use felt on bass.
    It’s the closest you can get the that “finger sound,” in my opinion.

    What gauge are those fingers? Can you buy them in bulk?

    • @AndreasBrink
      @AndreasBrink  3 роки тому +6

      They are light gauge. I got a package of 10, but only a few of them are actually useful for playing bass so the QC is so and so.

    This is why I use a felt pick myself...nothing beats that sound

    I'm going to have to try a felt pick.

    when u use the felt pick u are playing close to the bridge. so it sounds brighter. u need to play more ‘tasto’ to get a finger like sound. also use flatwounds and turn tone down. then there will be very little difference, in fact pick will sound more mellow.

    I started on bass around '82 using felt picks and the things shed like crazy. Wondering if they've improved since then.

    • @ThrashRebel
      @ThrashRebel 5 років тому +1

      pjmuck, not really. They degrade quickly. I have some I use that are felt-like, synthetic material. Kind of like a hard cardboard or thick paper, in a way.
      The soft coating wears off fairly quickly, but the consistency of the material beneath it retains that “softer” less articulated sound.
      But it wears thin, fairly quickly. I am not sure what thickness they are. I know they are much thicker than my Jazz III picks, which are 1.38, but after a couple of weeks of consistent playing the tips thin out to like a .70 or thinner.

    The felt pick has the percussive qualities of a plastic pick and the warmth of fingers. Nice

    this is a good, informative demo...and your playing makes all the options sound good. I've been playing with fingers for a long time, but recently traded for a MIM P-bass "Noir" which sounded kinda bright, so i started using a generic felt pick. i like it. thanks,Andreas. what's your opinion on that Dunlop stubby? i've never seen one of those.

    • @AndreasBrink
      @AndreasBrink  6 років тому +1

      Thanks Claude! I really like the Dunlop Stubby, it's shaped so that you get a better grip on it than most other picks. I use the Lexan version, the nylon version sounds good to but a little more subdued to my ears.

    • @bucknbronx13
      @bucknbronx13 6 років тому

      thanks, the Stubby sounds like it'd be a lot more durable than felt, but a harder surface, so brighter. 3mm? btw, i failed to mention how much i liked the video of your slide bass. very inspiring! started out as a bass player, been concentrating on slide guitar the last few years..... frankly, barely adequate on either.....the thought of combining marginal skills is dizzying!!

      I use the 2mm Big Stubby. My slide playing comes from guitar too, it's not something I use a lot though.

    Andreas I need to try a felt pick , I started using a 0.48 pick and I like it , easy to make ghost notes and I use the back of the pick , it has more meat for picking.
    I have nerve damage in my plucking fingers , all of a sudden my plucking fingers just dont work , the more I think about it the more they dont work , its so upsetting , I dont play slap bass that much , I will be 64 next month , it wasnt that long ago my parents where that age.
    where did the last 20 years go.
    Take care , stay safe , God bless.

      The main disadvantage with felt picks is that they lose the felt pretty quick and become less "felty". I haven't tried that many different though, some may be worse in this respect than others.
      Time doesn't wait for you, that's for sure. A decade or two passes by pretty quick. In times like this you also realize that it can all end sooner than expected. At least Covid-19 means more time to play guitar!

      @@markbass354 After returning to YT after a couple months without any videos I decided to check all the statistics and numbers that show what people watch and search for when they happen upon my channel. I haven't even looked at these before. Weather I like it or not this has become a slide guitar channel, that's what the overwhelming majority watch and want to see from me. Bass videos now actually makes more people unsubscribe than subscribe! The way the YT algorithm works these days it's really difficult to reach people if you do more than one thing. So to keep it together it will be more guitar oriented, but I'm thinking of ways to get some bass in there without making it too fragmented for the viewers (or the system, even if I'm not fully pleased about adjusting to that.) Long answer!

    Andreas you're going to make me go out and buy a felt pick with a Fender P bass.
    I made a huge mistake buying a cheap P bass and it's garbage , sticky neck and all.

    Ive had good felt picks and bad ones. Some are like playing with a big hard rock. 'Polymer picks' the Dunlop might be ok, but they are odd shaped. Never have found another like the first one I had. They dont last long either. Better buy a dozen.

    Hey cool I never saw a felt pick - only walnut, turtle shell, kagua nut[vegetable ivory] picks Ive never used. I invented a pic which lets me connect a rubber band thru the hole and that goes onto my finger in case I drop the pick- then I use fingers too. One guy I saw in SD used tape instead of a pick. Like medical bandage tape/ducktape. PS I made my acoustic into an electric like kurt cobain unplugged tiny.cc/guitarpics
