Your water jugs should be disinfected every 6 months or so to make sure that no one gets sick from bacteria that could be growing in your water jugs. Just follow this simple procedure:
1) Add 1 cup of rice, one squirt of dishwashing liquid and a gallon of tap water.
2) Shake for 30 seconds, dump out and rinse away soap.
3) Refill with 1 tablespoon of bleach and one gallon of tap water
4) Put on cap and shake for about 30 seconds.
5) Let sit over night to kill all the bacteria.
6) Remove cap, drain and rinse with tap water.
7) Leave upside down to drain and air dry

Thank you, Gary, I have been using the same bottles for 3 years now and apart from putting the caps back on when empty and pre-rinsing at the filling depot, I have never cleaned them. Funny I clean my water bottle that only gets filled from these bottles weekly but it never occurred to me to clean the big ones.
Thanks for sharing
@@GarytheWaterGuy Hey Gary, I recently found spots of mold inside my water jug and was just gonna throw the thing out. Will this method work for mold too?
Yeah don't use bleach in plastic
@@UltraUploadzTwo I would toss it out, not worth the mold
@@UltraUploadzTwo if I was you I would take a 1 litre of water and half a cup of salt a good shake and then 2 tablespoons of 20% hydrogen peroxide with 1 litre of water another good shake and then 2litres of clean water to rinse , that should clear out your mould
Be careful with the peroxide though!
Love how Canadians say OUT and ABOUT! Thanks for showing us how to clean these bottles.
Glad to hear you found it useful. Thanks for watching!
No we doon't! 🇨🇦 😂
You the man Gary, Just did this to 2 of 5 5 gallon jugs and excited to get back on that clean drinking water
Glad to hear it worked! Please share video with friends and family!
Not sure the rice is ok for the plumbing but is a great idea for scrubbing action. Maybe strain it out through a mesh strainer?? I spray my empty water jugs with white vinegar for storage and then rinse w water just before filling them at the spring. Super simple.
Thanks for the tip.
I was thinking I will strain my rice. Otherwise I would like to follow this tutarial thoroughly.
Yup rice will gum and ball up in the plumbing. You'd think it would be wet enough to just disintegrate the rice in a few days to weeks, but it's not. The balls of rice would break down over time, but on a scale of months to years and you'd likely have plumbing issues before that.
Was horrified to see the water and rice mixture dumped down the sink drain. You’ve never had a clogged pipe until you have rice stuck in it. Don’t ask me how I know.🙊
My mother was looking at our 2 jugs and how green the bottom is and I thought to my self how do I properly clean my jogs and I stumble upon this video so thanks for the information
Glad I could help! Please share with friends and family.
Why am i shaking my phone when he was shaking the jug? Hahahaha 🤣🤣🤣
Are you sure I am shaking the jug or is it just your phone shaking with me in it?
What we really need is a bigger mouth able to let me put my arm in the bottle to wash inside and rinse /wipe it dry. Then reattach the smaller mouth or spout for pouring. Same problems with tall glasses or any containers with small openings that you cannot scrub insides at all! This is what matters.
no bull about it.
I think maybe you could use a brush on a wire attached to an electric drill.
That's what the rice is for. It's a very great agitator
Someone with a brain such a rare sight 🙏🙌
Thank you for showing me how to take care of the algae I fear might be forming in the water jugs.
Happy to help. Please share video with friends and family!
I love the way Canadians say, “Ouwt.” 😂
Who wouldn't?
Did anybody else shake their phone when he was shaking the water jug?
I'll bet they did but just won't admit it!
Ryt on! Thank you Sir!! Its about 2AM here in Carlsbad,NM and I was gonna go get some fresh water for coffee ☕. Lol, well I'm doing everything you say 2 do. Lol, and then i hear let it sit over night. But, it's ok I appreciate the walk through and now I know exactly how to clean them Ryt! This is gonna sound gross. But, we actually went a whole year without cleaning it.. I dunno what we thought just cus it was always filterd water. I dunno, but thanks again Mate!

I heard from a comment in another video that using rice or corn kernals will cause small groves that help bacteria grow easier. And that bleach doesn't get rid of all the harmfull bacteria, and that it's best to use a small amount of ammonia.
I disagree.
@@GarytheWaterGuy why's that?
TY - I have film on the bottom on my bottles and I was wondering how to "scrub"! Genius!!!
Gld it helped. Please share video with friends and family
Yoo, Gary the Water Guy, this was very informative and helpful. I recently purchased a bottom water dispenser and had 3 jugs. People said to use bleach, others said just soap and water. Of course i didn’t want to get any bacteria, so I looked it up on UA-cam and I’m glad your video came up first. Easy steps and explanations. If I can only ask, How long are water jugs typically good for?
Usually about 5 years.
@@GarytheWaterGuy Doh! I've been using the same jug for at least 10, probably longer ... 😬
@@4adinak Definitely want to replace that. You're consuming plastic particles.
@@DrFuzzyxFuzz Aren't we all? haha. An unfortunate fact.
We're probably eating more than a few credit cards worth of plastic every year. Humans are so reckless. We let industrialization and profits lead us to creating products we didn't understand and still don't fully understand. Like how these microplastics effect our physiology. It's going to take decades to centuries to have a full picture of microplastics effects on the human body and other animal's bodies.
Is pouring a cup of soaked rice down the sink the worst idea in the world from a plumbing perspective? Almost as bad as coffee grounds?
@@LAZBY perhaps, but I did read the other week that, environmentally, coffee grounds - like oil and sooo many other things - are a very bad thing. So best we put them in the compost, where they are actually beneficial, I reckon!
Doesn’t everyone have a drain-stopper/strainer to collect the rice as it is poured out of the bottle? I’ve always had a sink stopper that would allow water to drain yet collect food etc so it does not go down the drain. Just put that in your sink drain before starting to clean the water jugs. Very simple logical solution to the issue ! Then just put the drained rice into the trashcan.
I got very sick from my local community water store. I began feeling very dizzy, having severe trouble remembering, heart thumping and always felt very nauseous. I never went back. I dumped all the water out on my yard. I'm going to report them to the health department. Thank you. Very professional. I don't think I'm going to buy local water anymore. I'm severely scarred (traumatized). I'm only drinking purified Bottled water, I've hear spring water in unclean. 😔
how do you know you got sick from the water?
Does it have to dry overnight before you can fill it up? It would be a big deal just filling it after rinsing out the bleach water?
Ideally yes. If you fill it right away you might smell or taste the chlorine in your water.
Thanks a million Gary, for providing this information
You're welcome. Please share video with friends and family
Saved me $ from purchasing two new ones ! Thanks 🙏🏼 very helpful , will share
Thanks!
Thanks for the info. I'm surprised you allow your water faucet to come in contact with the inside of the jug each time you added water, that could add contamination.
Yes, that’s true a thought we disinfect the faucets with chlorine
I don't feel comfortable using bleach. I like the distilled white vinegar better.
Plus, rice isn't necessarily clean, which is why I rinse before cooking. So I saw a video using unpopped corn kernals to cause friction.
Vinegar is not an approved product for killing bacteria in water, which is why I use chlorine in the video.
@@GarytheWaterGuy hmm, well maybe I will use a small amount of bleach with a lot of water, then.
But I still think unpopped kernals of corn is better than rice, which is starchy and not completely clean.
Hi Gary. Great video. I am WAY over due for my off grid water jug cleaning. Is the water from a garden hose OK ti use? All of my water comes from filling up jugs from companies like yours. If It's ok I'd prefer to use garden hose water as it's free. But will to use the RO water U purchase. Thanks again.
As long as you use chlorine to disinfect the garden hose is fine.
thank you for sharing. i will try this now
I didn't have any rice so i used dried lentils instead; worked great!
That's a great idea! Please share video with friends and family.
Tried the method but now it seems the smell of chlorine doesn't seem to go away, even after repeated rinses. Any ideas?
Yes, you can fill the container with tap water and leave it over night to neutralize the chlorine and then dump it.
You can also try using an air stone and pump for an aquarium that will help get those pesky chlorine molecules to exit the bottle
Once the bottles have had their overnight chlorine soak, and you've rinsed them out until you can't smell bleach, do you need to let them air dry if you're planning on refilling them immediately (within an hour or so)?
No, you don't need to.
@@GarytheWaterGuy awesome, thanks 😊
Thanks for the video Gary hope you're still doing well. Needed this for these food city fiesta 3 gallon water jug I bought I couldn't find any information on if it was able to be refilled. So I came here so I can be safe then sorry maybe do this once a month.
Good stuff! Please share video with friends and family!
Can be any size blue bottles 500ml to 4 liters, bigger to do this process. To self-serve can re-fill 500ml,4 litres jug,or bigger??
Just a dam question
I can't see why not?
Most of these water bottles say (drinking water only ) are they made to hold bleach water overnight without affecting chemical make up of plastic?
Also you don’t need to leave bleach in there that long. Five minutes would be plenty to kill all the bacteria. Read the label on the bottle.
Lawrence Sanzari you don't leave it in over night
Mac and July I went to a place where you can get spring water for just throwing a handful of change in this tub and you can get all the spring water you want for free but it's 30 foot from a cornfield which I didn't think anything about and when I got home and started using that water made my lips feel really icky and my gums and my dog wouldn't drink it and come to find out it's loaded with pesticides probably from that cornfield. Can I reclaim them with dish soap hot water and rice or corn kernels or do I need to throw the five and three gallon bottles away and just get new ones?
If you want to salvage them you would need to follow the procedure in the video using chlorine. I would just throw them away and get new ones.
@@GarytheWaterGuy sounds good to me. I can get new ones thank you
Thank you so much there were some on UA-cam saying to put bleach inside the plastic bottle I definitely will use your technique thank you so much

Great video! I have a converted cargo trailer in which I use 2 six gallon jerrican style water containers. One of those has a hose to which I've coupled a galley foot pump so it needs no electricity to pump water to the faucet. The hose from the water container to the pump and the pump to the faucet is my main concern. How do I properly disinfect that system. I think the procedures you outlined in the video are great for the water container itself but I do worry about the rest of it. I'm new to this, and only just installed this system a few weeks ago. I haven't used it yet on a real trip. Also, I live in Las Vegas where the summer heat is intense. Is there anything I can do to keep the water fresh or should I just empty the containers after every trip? Any insights you have will be very welcome!
This video explains how to disinfect the whole system ua-cam.com/video/cQyNRu5LqOM/v-deo.html. But I would definitely drain the whole thing between use
@@GarytheWaterGuy Thanks! I'll check it out!
@@richarddaugherty8583I'd flush the whole system after every trip during the summers. That heat is brutal and I wouldn't want to ingest any of that water
my left ear is lonely.
Didnt realize it while listening to this inside the truck. When i saw this post i started laughing so hard because it is only the right speaker.
😂😂
Ahh..I was wondering what was wrong..I could barely hear it..but once I turned my phone sideways and wide screen that fixed the volume..thought my phone was messed up
😂😂😂😂
Why put rice down your sink that and eggshells clog the drain??
Not when the rice is raw.
Lol maybe you should specify UNCOOKED rice for all those worried it’s gonna put starch in their jug.
Would crushed ice work if they ran to the local convenient mart and grabbed a cup?
What about the spigot? Do we need to worry about cleaning those?
Thanks for the video, when letting it sit overnight, shouldn’t you fill it with 5 gallons at the same ratio with the bleach so all surfaces are touched during the soak? Thanks in advance for your response.
No since you splashed the chlorinated water around and kept the cap on it isn’t necessary
This was very helpful thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful! Please share with friends and family.
How do I clear the drain of swolen rice?
That occurred to me too. Maybe pour out the water through a strainer to catch the rice. You might need to set the strainer down and use some other item to keep it in position so the strainer doesn't fall over, since you'll probably need both hands to hold the water jug.
Gary the water guy will judge you for using tap water it feels like 😂 properly disinecting a few of my 5gal bottles as I type this, thanks to you Gary!
I hope the video helped.
Hi Gary. I wish you would of showed us how just about every household doesn't have that fancy water hose/dispenser. Like give us some ideas? Great vid though, the method seems sound.
You can use any faucet, like from a laundry or kitchen sink
Love your accent when you say the word OUT. I'm guessing that you are from the Upper Midwest or Canada.
Accent? What accent? Yes, I am Canadian, cottage country north of Toronto. Didn't you catch the "eh"?
Lol I guess you already said that. I'm from Wisconsin so pretty much north in the Midwest and I get told I'm from Canada from southerners but even here we don't pronounce it like that. Our neighbors to the north.
This seems like the most thorough and effective jug cleaning method. When you say to rinse it several times after the bleach mix was in it overnight. Do you literally mean seven times? Thank you.
No, several times, like 2 or 3 should do.
What was the concentration of bleach liquid? When left overnight, the water bottle should be full to allow chlorine to come in contact with whole surface.
The video says add one tablespoon of bleach and one gallon of water. You do not need to add more water.
Wow. So good to know. Thank you!
You're welcome. Please share visdeo with friends and family.
Watch pouring rice down drain, could cause problem use paper towel over drain to filter out rice
Yes, that will work fine.
I've been getting sick and I think it's because I haven't cleaned the jugs out in years. Hopefully this helps. 🙏

Hi, Thank you for this. I have two smaller containers and wonder what the right formula for the bleach solution is for 3.5 gallon containers and 1.5 gallon containers? Do I use less bleach to water? What kind of bleach do purchase for this? Thank you again
Yes, you would use less bleach proportionately. Any bleach will work fine, I use Chlorox.
@@GarytheWaterGuy how much bleach would you use for a 3.5 gallon jug and a 1.5 gallon jug? Sorry I am not sure of the math for this. Thank you
@@flynnsylvest257 my thinking is to make up the bigger jug first with the gallon and tablespoon and then pour some into the smaller one instead of just pouring it down the drain. I will be watching for Gary's answer to your good question.

Hmm. Bleach seems kind of a lot. In a container you drink from
you rinse it out afterward. Better than having bacteria in the jug.
@@GarytheWaterGuy yeah I understand. Just did it recently so hopefully its clean now and without bleach. My dad did it so I'm counting on him
How often should the bottles be replaced? I have had the same bottles for 9 years is it time for new ones?
I really don’t know but I would definitely say it is time for a replacement.
For drying do we leave the cap on or off once cleaned?
Great question! You would leave it off.
Nice thanks. But how are using these jugs to refill it for a water cooler with no "nipple" cap on it? That's what I wanted to do.
I don’t know.
How many hours does it need to sit with b leach?

I want to store water for emergencies. I was thinking of a 3 week supply in case of a disaster, such as an ice storm. Also readily available Hydrogen Peroxide. Currently no bleach here.
Sorry, I really don’t know. Always recommend bleach
How will bleach disinfect upper part of the jug, if it is not full? Exposure time to bleach will be very different for upper and lower parts. So if there is bacteria film, they can withstand this sanitation.
The chlorine mixed with the water will disinfect after shaking the jug.
@@GarytheWaterGuy that is right, but I'm talking about that this sanitation method is as effective as just shaking without waiting.
@@nomars4827 no you still need the contact time and chlorine fumes to complete the disinfection.
Great and informative video! However, can I just use like a tablespoon of vinegar OR some vodka to disinfect my nalgene?
Vinegar is good for destroying bacterial films, but alcohol is not good desinfectant. There are bacterias that alcohol can't kill.
And vinegar WON'T kill as many types of bacteria as bleach. For instance the bacteria associated with human poop isn't properly killed by vinegar.....this is why it can't be officially labeled as a "disinfectant" same with ammonia it kills a lot but not enough to be labeled as a disinfectant though.
This is very helpful, Gary! Why dry the jug upside down and not right side up?
So the water runs out.

just in case i dont want to waste rice just for cleaning it. can i use a bottle brush instead?

Anyone have a recommendation of a high quality 5 gallon screw top jug I can buy online? All the ones I see on Amazon have a lot of negative reviews of cracking and collapsing. I really don't want risk dumping 5 gallons of water on my kitchen floor.
Sorry I do not know of one.
I buy mine from Walmart. I buy 3 gallon jugs because I'm too short to lift and turn over the 5 gallon ones.
I am trying the reliance ones from Canadian Tire. They appear sturdy but I would like to check the reviews now that I read your comment.
I get the 3 gallon ones from Walmart. Easier to carry and lift for my old ass. They are made in USA. I don't know as far as quality as I have just started using them.Easier to store next to each other and lift into car and because rectangle type shape. And doing the "shake" to clean is easier. Hope that helps The Primo water pump works off it also.
2 days til the process is complete? 😮 Leave it out overnight with the bleach, then another to dry out? 😮
Yup.
Just curious, what is the purpose of the rice?
Great question! It is used to "scrub" the inside of the water jug.
Nice
