    The numbers painted on the "ribs" are where geologists collected rock samples for assaying. Different colors indicate different geologists likely at different times. Apparently the mine was studied for reopening possibly as an open pit. The existing deep cuts, according to a website, were excavated 1933-34. Desert taranulas are usually harmless and not aggressive.

    Great video! Be safe so you enjoy the next one!
    Just my 2 cents:
    12:44... 'Chasing a vein' and it petered out... no sense blasting further. If you look close remaining blast holes are bottom of drill hole only a few inches deep.
    27:35 - 27:55... Tracks were covered by slide and they didn't bother digging that steel out when pulling the tracks. It got bad few years back of scrappers raiding mine sites for iron machinery for scrap when iron was high scrap prices. Buddy of mine had a theft. Scrappers cut down his steel 60' windmill, a steel load bin and every piece of steel at the mine. Cut it up and hauled it off. Organized group with torches and trailers...
    30:44 yes, a tarantula... 99% of time very docile... Strange to us we've never seen one that deep in a mine. Most times near entrance where cool and prey comes in to cool.
    34:54... possibly winch hoist and motor platform?... Had to be later of mine history... possibly post war.
    42:48... Possibly base for a crusher.. or base for winch? Hard to tell without seeing whole operation layout.

    • @PinInTheAtlas
      @PinInTheAtlas  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you so much for all of that info. We love receiving this kind of feedback, it really helps us out on our future explorations. We normally don't give out the real location names due to those despicable scrappers vandals and thieves. Unless of course the location is very well known and already picked through. Glad you enjoyed our adventure!

  • @roundmidnightsuttree
    @roundmidnightsuttree 3 роки тому +3

    I don't have any underground mining experience and all my career was spent in open pit mining for industrial minerals (high purity white marble). It is not uncommon to collect blast hole drill chips and have them tested/assayed at a lab to direct further mining planning. In high value heavy metals mining that practice probably was established when technology was sufficiently advanced. It would not surprise me to find that profitable gold mines in the 50's were using this method to identify higher grade ore when planning mining for the next week or month. A simple way of marking drill holes to tie back to lab assays would be to use a numbering system spray painted on the face to mark where samples were taken.
    I really enjoyed this mine exploration. Seemed relatively safe to me.
    Keep up the good work.

    • @PinInTheAtlas
      @PinInTheAtlas  3 роки тому +1

      This mine is relatively safe and has lots of foot traffic. We are not mine explorers - don't have the knowledge or the equipment, although there is something about them which is illuring. Thanks for the info on your mining experience and glad you enjoyed this exploration.

As an occasional nomad myself I'd like to offer a suggestion; get one of those gazebo/pavilion shade devices. They generally sell for less than$100. They're tall enough to stand under and they ought to be taller than your truck. They generally measure 10x10 ft. I can erect mine solo in 3 minutes. You can also use tarps to enclose the sides for privacy or windproofing. Bon voyage, Mon Ami.

    Great video. Wonder what would have happened if spidey had decided to get between you and exit.:) Once when i was in Oklahoma i met this guy that would shoo the big spiders off the road. He would poke them with a stick he kept in his car just for that fact.Well he p.o.ed one and it jumped at him and landed on his face. Those things are as big as plates down there, and when you tease them they like to stand on their back legs. Moral of the story? When you see one stand on his back legs? Run baby, Run!!:) I've never been to the Tyro, but have watched some great mine exploration videos on it. Today i want to tell you about the "ribs". If you look down the back notice how it goes up a little and back down.. Those low spots are called ribs. That is do to the way they drill and shoot. The top holes are drilled up on a slight angle. By measuring between ribs you can determine how far their drill steel went into the rock. Anyway... thanks for the pin. You should have some pin the atlas hat pins made and sell them to help finance your great videos.

    • @PinInTheAtlas

      Thank you, Richard, Yeah I stay away from those things altogether, Andrea however, to my dismay thinks they are adorable! We also have some other merch, like shirts and a really nice hoodie we have our eyes on. We want quality products and have found a company we are interested in working with. Pfew, that was one big exploration! This mine didn't look as sketchy as some of the others you've ventured in; rock looked (in most places) pretty solid. But still: most of these old mines are totally blocked up with heavy duty metal grids surrounded by warning signs, while for this one only a 'welcome & explore' sign was missing?? Did that tarantula lose its way or something? Was very far in the mine imo.

    • @PinInTheAtlas
      @PinInTheAtlas  3 роки тому

      The really solid rock is why we felt more comfortable venturing into this one. Plus no entrances were fenced off and no warnings, plus it does receive a fair amount of foot traffic. It was very far in there, maybe it hitched a ride!

    For mine terminology you could hook up with someone who is really knowledgeable or watch some other You Tube videos - - an evening with Frank from Exploring Abandoned Mines especially when he's with Sharon as he is extremely careful explaining things to her while going into some levels that are super sketchy and she has rightly pulled back on his unbridled endeavors several times. He does stuff I know you're not into but he is very knowledgeable about mines and techniques for exploring them and mineralogy - - he even has his own mining museum. Awhile back I mentioned to Frank on his channel a lot of interesting things I had found hunting and exploring in Arizona where I grew up back in the 60s and how I wish we had today's electronics recording devices back then like they do now to record these things as many are just a memory without much trace left some 50 years later. Well next thing you know Frank hooked up with Gly from Abandoned and Forgotten Places in Arizona exploring mines in Arizona and the Southwest. Remember when I found some old mines or mining set ups I was hunting not out looking for anything but game but I'm a die hard history buff so I would ask question and try to find out about things I came across. I did not have a mining background so I barely knew any of the proper terminology but between Gly and Frank I gained that knowledge. I have participated in archaeological digs and have been scuba diving on wrecks for over 30 years. You seem to find a lot of things I'd like to know more about and it would be more interesting if you knew the why and the wherefore so if you watch stuff from those 2 guys your knowledge base will increase ten fold. That tarantula was more afraid of you than you were of it - - well maybe its a tie hehe. The sad part is when you get older and have learned everything there is to know nature plays a trick on you and makes you start to forget. In 2018 I went back to Arizona for our 50th class reunion and the pulp and paper mill our family moved to Arizona from Canada to open in 1961 is now a ghost. The old adobe structures in what was a ghost town not far from the mill back then is now gone so it is very important people record these places because you can turn around and they're gone - - good hunting on your adventures - - keep up the good work. And one final remark to your viewers/followers - - something that has survived the ravages of time (native artifacts, abandoned structures and the like) would benefit greatly from having you not leave your trash behind or your signature or witty sayings on the walls in any shape or fashion - - preserve and remember history don't deface it

      @@PinInTheAtlas I look for videos of places I am familiar with or similar environments but when I was there it was a night and day difference in the condition - - nature is relentless. Back in the 1960s we didn't have the gear available now in fact my mode of transportation on many hunting trips was on horse back - - original 4 wheel drive. When we drove off the Mogollon Rim to the Valley we'd see head frames still being used in some mines in the hills of the low desert areas. I've hunted all over the Superstitions, the Rim area and the Salt river Canyon on foot and on horseback - - I've actually been in the White House ruins in Canyon De Chelly but people couldn't just look they had to mess with it now there's a fence so you see it from behind that fence no more getting inside. White Mountain Lake was actually named Daggs Reservoir but developers didn't think that was classy enough and Rte. 66 and Interstate 40 ran right through Holbrook, Joe City and Winslow, etc so when I watch your videos I go back in time in my mind to what things looked like in the 60s and 70s. So if exploring these places is in your soul imagine what it was like seeing them when the buildings were less run down but rather had walls standing and a roof or at least part of one and not in the state we find them today - - I look forward to your new stuff. So Randy, Mr. M , Gly, Frank and Sharon plus Jeff he knows his mineralogy for sure - - wow what a crew - - a dream team in the new one hahaha I see why the recommendation GREAT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
