Thanks for all you have done in archiving all of the footage from this period of Irish and British history that's second to none. An amazing body of work.
there is actually a movie that has the same title about the prisoners lives and how they tried to escape and took hostages, the IRA took over the most secure prison ever built it wasn't supposed to be possible.
Brendan Darky Hughes is spoke off in the same category as Connolly, Pearse, Collins, Sands. legend of a man whos name and storys will be remembered forever.
dont agree with his agenda.....but Darkie was a man who stood for what he believed in. His final words are sad... take me back to the cell. sadly if he hadnt been on strike he may have lived to play a longer peace role and i am sure he would have embarrassed the challenge? whats your thoughts ? mike : )
I have vivid memories of visiting that shithole in the late 80s early 90s with my mammy visiting my dad. Seeing a gaunt looking man who i hadnt seen in the flesh from 1984 when i was 2. For my family the GFA allowed my dad to come home but for the struggle our republican cause it was selling our cause down the river. I havent been back home since i moved to scotland
All of the killing, lives lost, families left without Fathers, Mothers and children, hunger strikes etc and for what? A country now filled with low life vermin, drug dealers and people living in tents and cardboard boxes on the streets and complete lack of public services, health provision, homes etc, would they think it was worth the sacrifice now??
“Low life vermin”. Ahh, I spot an Englishman that holds a grudge against anyone who has pride for who they are, for having bravery to stand up for what they believe in, for possessing patriotism for a country worth being born into, for loving their history….all these things an Englishman can only dream of having the privilege to experience. No republican or nationalist died in vain, most of Ireland was kept in the hand of the Irish with the rest of it soon following suit (look at the latest political votes in NI). You’ll never understand the worth of Celtic sacrifices. Sending love from Wales as you clearly need some, whatever is making you so bitter, I hope you work through it. 🇮🇪🏴
That’s what I always say mate I’m 25 a lot of people I grew up with and know from school are dead of drug overdoses and su*cide with no mental health services to cater to the damage to drugs have done to our community’s
I went to school in Tunbridge Wells in the late 1970's, I'm from Australia. I went into the Army recruiting office and passed the initial psych test thinking the Army would be a realistic job choice. Then I was told I would get a train ticket for a medical evaluation etc. Got home and realized that there was a possibility no matter how small of going to Ireland. Being an Aussie I reckoned it was none of my business being neither Irish or British. Condolences and all due respects to the families and friends on both sides who suffer.
How is that woman crying on TV about her brother as if he was a good person. He committed human cruelty towards the prisoners, he abused his position. “I need to forgive those who killed him”, I wonder if she’s ever considered forgiving the evil acts he committed.
I lived through the troubles and remember very clearly when Bobby died. I also never agreed with the English approach in Northern Ireland, but killing innocent people with bombs and guns, gunning down fathers in front of their children is terrorism. Violence solved nothing in NI. R.I.P Bobby what you did took some serious balls.

It was the nationalist community that wanted the Army, they went from making them tea and sandwich’s to setting them up to be slaughtered within 6 months
@unusedsub3003 The NI govt, Stormont, did have an armed paramilitary force, the B specials. This was the equivalent of the US national guard. They were also exclusively made up of men from a protestant/loyalist background and had a reputation for human rights abuses against the Catholic minority. You have to remember that NI was set up to create a state dominated by protestants, had virtually no oversight or accountability, was gerrymandered to guarantee protestant supremacy and was opened/actively hostile to the Catholic minority (even though that Catholic minority made up over 1/3 of the population at that time!)
ATLmodK here, that’s how negotiations work, however he didn’t get far with Maggie, as I’m sure you know, and actually only got better when the Labour party got into power.
Generations of brave Irish patriots gave their lives and their liberty in the struggle for Irish identity. Don't give away what they so nobly fought for.
ATLmodK here, not sure that you can call Gerry’s internment experience easy time. Also, in any armed conflict, leaders are protected by their troops or followers. Can you imagine Montgomery or George VI being jailed during WW2? Or Eisenhower or FDR? The leaders are always the most secure.
@@ATroubledLand I just wondered because it seems that the late 70s was hellish for the prisoners. Never heard the top leadership talk about any experiences like that.
ATLmodK here again, thanks so much for your comment and you are right that the seventies were hell for prisoners and others in northern Ireland. Gerry has referred to his beating in a couple of his speeches in the 2010’s and later, but he always pointed out that he was not the only one subject to this treatment.
The ground area starts to rotate by position aloned with staff recieving the center blast cannons or mu,sic. Mon,he has the a cycle the claimants in front of the ride move along as the ground rotates positions untill the first position of the last death is washed where the next lone is is another ride then the cycle starts again
Feel sorry for the innocent men, women, and above all children who were murdered by these men. Not these men. Just for the book, I also served a period in Long Kesh ....and also in Crumlin Road Prison. But with a different purpose to these men. I was a real soldier.
What puzzles me the most about this calamity is how come two english speaking peoples have to show off like this? The possibilities are abundant and the bad a non entity. Its not a conflict of religious character. Its simple pride. 😢
It's never BEEN a religious struggle. Ever. Some of the most famous Irish nationalists were protestant, like the iconic Wolfe Tone. Hes a republican icon, thoroughly celebrated throughout republican Ireland, yet he wad a devout protestant. The Irish fight has ALWAYS been a resistance against tyranny.
A waste of time and human life the whole conflict.British working class loyalist working class and catholic working class all want equality and a prosperous life I hope under the peace deal we can find ways of working together for equal prosperity that respects all our community alliances.Personally I don’t believe in colonial segregation or settlements unless it has the approval of the host government that’s just me no disrespect to the loyalist community that I see as a great people we cannot change history we only have now what we’ve got the reality.I would like to see peace continue in Northern Ireland investment and jobs a fight against poverty a better life for everyone’s children.

Much respect for the men that had the courage to stand up for their beliefs, against decades of injustice.
As a Scottish man i just love these docs thay are so important and interesting to watch keep up the good work 😁🏴
Amazing channel and without doubt the best on the history and lives of those involved and affected by this dark period in British/Irish history 👍

Aged two in 1984, so aged 12 in 1994, 17'ish 1999? So what did you contribute to the 'cause' then, apart from comments on social media in 2024?

Imagine referring someone as terrorist for defending there country and flag. Disgusting.
Typical for the British

Defending “there” own country by murdering their own women & children?
The majority of people both catholics & Protestants didn’t want this.

RIP Brendan Hughes, Gaelic Hero.
Him sure it wasn't the first time this guy found two small holes. 😂
The English government sending in the military was the worst decision ever made, to this day I’ll never understand WHY.
the Bosnian war would have been a picnic by comparison I'd they didn't!

@unusedsub3003 UDR was their National Guard, some were also members of the UDA and UVF. The police were not worth the money they were getting paid.
