    0:00 - 1. Basic Melody
    0:54 - 2. Dynamics (which don't really come accross that well here - I used too much compression on the recording)
    1:45 - 3. Note Length
    2:36 - 4. Basic Left Hand
    3:24 - 5. Left Hand Note Length
    4:10 - 6. Overlapping Left Hand
    4:54 - 7. Basic Ornaments
    5:37 - 8. Overlapping Right Hand Notes
    6:19 - 9. High Octave
    7:01 - 10. Chords Only
    7:43 - 11. Different Chords
    8:23 - 12. Rhythmic Variations

    Thanks for this, I really appreciate it as I've been working on this tune a lot myself recently. John Kirkpatrick writes a fair bit about playing the same tune for an hour to really get inside it and come up with variations and ornaments; you've made a good start of it!

      It’s a Hohner Pokerwork, which is a modestly priced instrument that many beginners start with, so certainly nothing fancy!

    Thank you! The first song I figured out was quite easy to find bass notes so I was a bit flabbergasted when the second song I tried only seemed to work with the root bass. I think this will help me add some variety to my melody

    Thanks Paul.
    That was a really good lesson. I learnt a lot especially with the Staccato.
    When on holiday in Ireland a great musician told me " Its not how many tunes you know its how many times you can play the same tune differently".
    I never forgot that.
    The little Poker Work in the right hands sounds glorious!!!
    It looks new.
    Is it Chinese made?
    Do you like it?
    It sounds A Okay to me and not too much of an air hog?
    Sorry for all the questions but you are just so good.
    Peter

    That staccato effect is awesome I would love to be able to grasp that. I have seen Simon Care do this live and it is amazing to watch.

    Thanks for posting, i have a 3 row hohner and am trying to figure it out, i can play the right hand better all the time but am trying to learn the left, you have some very good ideas

    How do you do all that in one take with no mistakes?!

    This is absolutely fantastic! Exactly what I need to get me out of a rut. I've played for years but find it hard to divert from the tune. I do 'crunchy' cross basing and chords in the right. I use a lot of bounce with my bellows and what I call bellows 'snap-off' but little else. Maybe it's my autism but I need help breaking out of the rut. Do you do any more of thse tutorials? Alexxx

    Thanks for the tutorial Paul. I'm struggling a bit to cover all the left hand buttons in some tunes playing on a GC melodeon especially quickly reaching from the top to bottom bass. I find the instrument hard to grip and to use all 4 fingers on the basses. Do you usually reach between the bass buttons with 2 fingers or 3 or 4?

  • @cjwaywell
    @cjwaywell 3 роки тому +2

    It might be like 4 notes but there is nothing simple about it as one minute you pull then you push then you push them you pull it's been driving me mad trying to get them in the right order lol.

    One thing I've noticed about the Hohners...noisy buttons.

    Thank you for that lesson, but as a total beginner, i dont get the order of the buttons/ notes you play with the right and with the left hand. Is here someone who can write me the order of the buttons?

    Brilliant that my G single row Melodeon is very limited but I'll be giving it a try

      he looks to be playing on one row so if you copy him you will just be playing it in G instead of im guessing A

    Thank you for the demonstration. I have a question about one of the simpler features: According to which rules do you play some melody notes staccato? Mostly the first one in a pair of same notes, but not exclusively.

    • @paulyoungfolk
      @paulyoungfolk  6 років тому +3

      Good question Yes, first in a pair of matching notes is a good general rule (for English tunes at least). Apart from that I don't follow many easily formulated rules that I'm aware of. It's often just where you want a bit of a lift in the tune (often to go with jumps in Morris dances).
      However, based on five minutes just now of playing a few tunes round and seeing where I put the staccato notes:
      In more reel-like English tunes (with lots of groups of four quavers) you can get a nice snappy sound to the off beat by making the third quaver in groups of four staccato (works well in Soldier's Joy).
      And when you get three or more crotchets in a row I think I'd usually staccato at least one of them to keep it sounding lively (lots of examples of this in Princess Royal).
      Finally, staccato notes can often just be a good antidote to parts of a tune that otherwise might get a bit messy or "smudgey". Can be helpful to use one especially when you've got a quick pair of notes that change both button and bellows direction to make sure you get cleanly from one to the other.

    Wow ! Fantastic
    I have a c/c# melodeon could I do all of this on my melodeon?

    • @paulyoungfolk
      @paulyoungfolk  3 роки тому

      No, a lot of this wouldn't work on a C/C# box.
