The Dutch boy who received the German Knight's Cross - World War II

  • A short documentary about the life of Gerard Mooyman, a Dutch boy who joined the German military and served in the SS-Freiwilligen Legion 'Niederlande' during the Second World War. He was the first non-German to be awarded the Knight's Cross, the highest German award during the war.
I find it very interesting to highlight his story. There is no way to defend or glorify Nazi Germany, I certainly don't do that, and that's not the point of this video at all. I think it is interesting to look behind the individual story of a soldier who fought for Nazi Germany. Why did they join the military? Why did they fight? What were their reasons? This is one of those stories.

Thus Mooyman attempted to be and really was one of the best in the period of occupation-definitely according to the requirements of the epoch-and also was a good citizen after the war. He was tried for "collaboration with the enemy" and was very fortunate to make it to trial .
In almost every country the germans occupied, male collaborators were either beaten by mobs and/or arrested-tried-sentenced to prison if not killed outright after liberation. Many chose to flee with the retreating germans. One such group was the 33rd Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS composed of French collaborators and the last unit to guard hitler's bunker.
Surprisingly as far as I've read , Women were somewhat spared this fate in all Western countries with most being chased out of their hometown after being shaved bald . Not to say that this was an easy fate for them as many were repeatedly beaten and raped on end for months as their short hair made them targets for reprisals. In one part of France 30 percent of the reprisal killing victims were women. Some escaped that fate by being hidden by relatives . One thing Grandparents don't talk about is that for months after the wars end many of those women could be found just outside U.S. bases engaging in the world's oldest business as American soldiers were seen to be more sympathetic and protective than the French or British soldiers.
Things were very different in the East , men and women were shot or sent to the gulags .

Imagine how hell would break loose when goverments decide to interact in child education at home. Is there any other solution? Basically it is unfair that kids are almost doomed to make wrong choices just because of their family education / misinformation. Maybe parental impact should be held accountable in court?
