The Beast didn't imprison Belle. He imprisoned her father for trespassing. She offered (under her own free will) to take his place. She doesn't ask anything else first, just jumps directly to "I'll be your prisoner" then he realizes all the awful things he's done and works to make himself better

yes , people blame the beast for no reason. Just imagine that you turn from a beautiful prince into a hideous beast. He still changed himself and improved for Belle. People should stop taking things so negatively.
Pinoicchio taught us about honesty and doing all you can to make your dreams come true. What I got from Beauty & The Beast is to judge people based on their inside. Also Aladdin also taught us about how we should appreciate what we have instead of looking at others lives as well as how we rebel when we're teens
I agree with this but also Princess and the Frog also taught us that happiness doesn't come from money or other material things and you should never lose sight of the love you have for people and their love for you.

I agree with you except for Pinocchio, that movie is just messed up plain and simple. And Beauty and the Beast teaches how not to do what your saying. It sounds like you need to go back and watch both again with these thoughts in mind.
I still enjoy all the movies as an adult. I know some of them may have dark themes if you think about it, but I try to see them just as what they are, disney movies. Life is already enough tough to overthink about this movies. Let's just enjoy them and let the hard things to reality
I completely agree, ms mojo overthought these movies, sure some of this stuff is true but most is hilarious, adorable and kinda sad now (Mufas’ death especially)…I also don’t have kids so I can’t really judge as a parent 😅😄

I dunno about the prince in Snow White, he gives her a quick and respectful kiss on the lips to acknowledge his lost love and then sits down to morn with the dwarfs. He's just as surprised and overjoyed as they are when she comes back.
Ariel didn’t leave the ocean because of Eric. She had already sung an entire song about how much she wanted to be part of that world before she ever meets him. The kiss was just the bargain that Ursula proposes for her permanent transformation.
Yes. Ariel was already interested in exploring the human world. Eric turned that interest that might have happened into a full blown desire. Saving him turned 'someday' into now. The thing I find odd about many modern interpretations of The Little Mermaid is the idea that if Ariel found another reason to want to go to the surface, that her original reason and intent instantly died and no longer mattered. Life should not stop from having a crush or a partner. But it can be enhanced by that, and that's totally normal and okay.
@@kathycoleman4648 Exactly! And I don’t even think that meeting Eric is what made her decide to go to Ursula and strike up that deal, but rather her father violently destroying her collection. THAT was what made her think “Yeah, I’m outta here.”
I don't know why this is so hard to get. Ariel always wanted to live on the surface to escape the entrapment she felt in the ocean. Eric was just the trigger that gave her the courage to go through with it since her desire to get to know him gave her something more specific to shoot for. And considering how borderline abusive Triton was to her it's easy to see why she would risk everything for happiness.

Perfectly represents why they decided to make arial of African American descent for the little mermaid in the upcoming film. In the sequel as she warns her daughter not to return to the streets that her mother grew up on... She warned her daughter about how dangerous it is and how she need not know life of that nature... Ariel was from the streets yall

They touch on this quite a bit in other videos. I think they just try to adapt the narrative to fit whatever list they are creating.

All things considered, The Hunchback of Notre Dame is the most adult of the Disney movies cited here.
Frollo’s obsession over Esmeralda is something kids wouldn’t understand. And they already changed him from a man of the cloth to a judge already to avoid flak from the church.
Then there’s Esmeralda who’ll never pass muster as a teenager. She’s clearly an adult woman.
It’s said Mr. Eisner demanded a more serious, adult take on The Hunchback of Notre Dame and he got it in spades.
The case of Sleeping Beauty was ironic as Aurora and Prince Philip were already set up in a pre-arranged marriage, as implied by their fathers.

Same here! I’m leagually blind and it’s like the authority figures in my life seem to think that i can’t do anything. When I’ve tried to advocate for myself, they don’t really acknowledge it until after either five explanations or, the more common, when a sited person in their 30+ age explains what I’ve been trying to get accross. Like I don’t even matter.
Peter Pan is actually a true villain, cutting off Hook’s hand & feeding it to the Crocodile 🐊 ⏰, kidnapping kids, & also kidnapping toons & turning them into bootlegs like from “Chip & Dale: Rescue Rangers”.
In the original stories he was painted as a villain.
Well Hook is a murderous pirate. So he ain't no saint. You could say there were two villains and Wendy and her brothers were the heroes.
Not to mention the film having an extremely offensive scene and song about Native Americans aka "Red Man".

In Once Upon a Time he was one of the most vicious villains in the series.

I'm 36 and when I watch any classic disney movie I feel like a child again even though I have a son who's 14! As a family we love Disney and we organise a trip to Disneyland Paris every year for all the Christmas stuff. When you go there you don't even need to have a child, you see adults there alone on romantic breaks because all the fun and magic can also make it romantic xxxx
Ariel wanted to discover the world before she meant Eric so she’s technically following her dreams
Actually she changed her dreams after she knew Eric because after that she wanted to be with him and did all those things (like accepting the contract with an evil witch) because she wanted to be part of HIS world, she fell in love and just wanted a human life beside him.
Plus her father is being domestically abusive to her. He never hears her out even the one clip they show she tries to stand up for herself. Granted Ariel is a teenager and doesn’t know everything but her father unintentionally pushes her towards that. While he does mean well it’s still a form of abuse when he destroys her grotto.I’d be no differthen a parent destroying their daughter’s boy band stuff.
@jf k I know Ariel isn’t perfect I’m not saying she’s totally innocent from this, I understand he’s annoyed Ariel isn’t listening. However in the film her father never TALKS to her about this and when she does stand up for herself he refuses to listen to her, he does a “you live under my ocean you’re gonna do what I say because I say so”. Hey guess what if you try the enforcement method and tell your kids not to do something you’re just gonna encourage them to do it even more. If you want further details as to my perspective on this film I recommend you go watch jambareeqi’s review of this film he goes into much more debth then I have time for but point is neither of them are fully in the right in this film. I was just providing some contributing factors as to why Ariel would go with Ursula’s proposal
@jf k he's an adult and she's not. it's his duty to be a protective and kind leader. if we don't respect children obviously they will not respect us or themselves. children learn by example. she's doing what she was taught to do, disrespect.

The lion king hits me so hard as adult. I cry so much during this film now. Due to losing my own dad when I was 21 due to cancer. I tear up every time mufasa is brought up

honestly the fact that Hunchback of Notre Dame appeared so many times near the top in two of these Watch Mojo Videos about serious/dark Disney Movies shows that the Hunchback of Notre is literally one of the darkest Disney movies Disney has ever created. It’s probably like at least top 3 along with Pinocchio.
In a small defense of the Beast, he gave Belle only one rule: don't go in the West Wing, and it's one of the first things she does. I feel his anger was justified even if the expression of it was not.
Triton is still being overbearing, refusing to be honest with Ariel and hating all humans based on prejudice rather than instead maybe proposing Ariel get to know this particular one a bit better before getting in too deep (pun intended). His worries are understandable and relatable but he's still going about handling it all wrong. Ursula took advantage of Ariel's naivety but Triton made it a lot easier for her.
@jf k and making a mess of it. No one is denying he means well but he still has his share of responsibility for the ensuing problems.
I think it's prejudicms is off for this, He lost her wife to humans, that one enough is a good reason of course he was just being careful as a measure and wanna keep his daughter safe. Triton just acted like most of father would act for the safety of his kids.

I think Fantasia should be mentioned as well. It did make me love classical music more as a kid and now I understand music better, I appreciate it even more as an adult. Also Sleeping Beauty did grow on me more as an adult because of the detail in music and animation I see now.

When fantasia was rereleased in the 70s, people would do drugs then go see the movie while tripping. Just the thought of it cracks me up
Most of the Fairy Tales that Disney adapted were sanitized and made child friendly. Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast were extremely dark and gruesome. Hell even the original novels of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo and Peter Pan by J.M Barrie show their respective title characters in a villainous light.
Oh my god yes. Cinderella was so much darker. Almost all of these movies Disney made they took out all of the dark parts of the stories and re-told them.
Me and my friendgroup watched beauty and the beast a week ago and our main take was how childish the beast is. We grew up not liking his character because that was trendy when we were young (the buzzfeed articles etc) but now that we are grown-ups we just saw him as a depressed guy with anger issues and toxic behaviur. Ended up rooting for him to become a better person
‘Beauty and the Beast’ helped me deal with Red Flags and of course, the first Booktuber Disney Princess.
I’m going to get judged for this but Maleficent AND the fairies were iconic. Also, if I wasn’t invited to a party, I wouldn’t take it out on the child.
Maleficent was right to be angry. They should have invited her. Whether they wanted her there or not. She was an extremely powerful fairy and you don't tick off the fae.

What makes Judge Claude Frollo so frightening as a villain is the fact that he is under the delusion that he is doing the will of God. His character is an almost perfect example of many historical figures who were in a similar position of power and influence throughout history, resulting in the suffering of countless millions in every age of human civilization. This is why, as adults, we see Frollo as more dangerous than Disney villans with magical powers because our knowledge of history has taught us that men and women like Frollo have existed, and they can exist in the future if we are not careful enough to keep such individuals from gaining the kind of authority that allows one to discriminate that Frollo had in The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
The thing that makes Claude Frollo terrifying is that he is one of the few Disney villains whom, in some way or another, have the capability at any time in history of being truly real.
Also finding love in real life isn't as easy as in the movies
That's true I agree, nor is it all roses and milk all the time, love in real life takes work, a lot of it, it's a video game with a 2 player mode only.

I don't think Cinderella wanted to leave her step family. She loved them even if they mistreated her.
The fairy godmother couldn't wave her wand and fundamentally change a person so she couldn't force the steps to be kind to Cinderella. She couldn't directly give Cinderella a whole new life. However, she could introduce her to someone who could.
I'm 32 right now and I still enjoy these movies no matter how old I get, even if some of them do appear more messed up than they're supposed to be. 20 years ago, I was a huge fan of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Nowadays, I may be more of a Hunchback girl but Snow White still holds a special place in my heart. I don't care if it's not perfect. It's still a good movie.
I'm 39 & was always more of a Belle girl, as she was the first brunette princess that loves to read I remember seeing as a child ... So I've always related to her more
Honestly, the Toy Story films are some that give different perspectives watching them grown up. Many of the tear jerking moments hit much harder. But they're still masterpieces to watch.
Honestly, any Disney film can be watched, and still give off the charm needed, whether for kids or adults.
I had a breakthrough a few years ago when I realized Timon and Pumbaa's "Hakuna Matata" lifestyle wasn't about not letting things get to you but instead about avoidance.
Well to be fair to Timon and Pumbaa but if it hasn't been for them, Simba would have died in the desert. Heck, even when Simba wakes up he was already depressively walking back in the desert not caring if he lived or died. Timon and puma DID brought some happiness back into his life even if technically their problem-free philosophy goes against the movie's moral.
I was a 4-5 year old girl when "Sleeping Beauty" came out around 1960. I loved that movie. Had the book and the album. I still love it. It's a gorgeous film. I assure you, the "non-consensual" kiss and other elements of the story didn't harm me. Somehow, I earned a Master's degree from a prominent university, had a successful, professional career in a male-dominated field, and have enjoyed a wonderful family life.
kissing women that are not awake e sexual abuse. the fact that you're ok doesn't mean anything. im a victim of sexual abuse and I'm like you. how many children grew up being beaten everyday with a belt and are successful now. a person's success is not a measure for defending sexual abuse.

In the original story? Yes, it was a strange man who raped her as she slept which is absolutely horrific but the Disney version is romantic and wholesome.

It's not even that she 'brought it on herself', which kinda insinuates that she did something she knew was wrong. It's closer to Katniss Everdeen's "I volunteer as tribute" to save Primrose. Belle's a hell of a lot stronger than most people realize.

Peter is kind of a special case. When they say he can't grow up, they mean it. In the books and some of the movies, Peter is constantly forgetting things, because learning things would mean maturing, and maturing is growing up. Thus, he's a kid with a vaguely-adolescent looking-body with the mind of an eight-year-old. Peter seems dark and brash because doesn't understand the severity of death, has an aversion to girls that feels more like 'girls have cooties' than 'stay in the kitchen', and looks like life like a game because he's never had to think otherwise. He's not a sociopath, he's a kid who's literal stunted development keeps him from acquiring a moral compass.

There's no problem with liking them still as an adult. The issue comes in when children watch them and think there's nothing wrong about the message.
@@phantom115cw You can know the original story and still enjoy the Disney version. I know I do, and I’ve known both versions for as long as I can remember, meaning I have no memory of knowing the one without knowing the other (believe it or not, as a little girl, I had an illustrated kids book with the actual original story, including the “kill the prince or turn into seafoam” part. Of course, this was like 30 years ago).

Christ Dumbo has the saddest scene, not just in Disney but almost global wide, in history when Dumbo goes to his imprisoned Mom and such. That will make you cry for sure as it will break your soul!
Same with me and the Good Company scene in Oilver and Company where if you have had a good pet that loves you back, and sadly they pass on, this song reminds you of them and the good times you had, bringing you to tears for sure!

The Incredibles. As a child I enjoyed it because I saw it as a superhero movie good fights. But as an adult I noticed that Mr Incredible went through a middle age crisis and Elastigirl thought he was cheating on her
for a lot of these, what makes you look at them differently, at least to me, seems to be that the viewer is taking them literally or applying what are mostly fairy-tales to real life situations. Now I know that a lot of people use sleeping beauty and snow white as examples of why consent is important and its bad because they don't get consent before they're kissed but its like...thinking about it that way...sure. But it also kills the magic for me personally to think of a fairy tale that was written so long ago in such real modern terms. And just because you let a kid watch Snow white without saying "The prince didn't have consent to kiss her so it's bad", that doesn't mean a kid can't learn the lesson some other way. So I don't know.
People are trying to imagine that the characters in the films are people living in our real world under our current rules. But people in our modern world do not hold up to conflict very well, and conflict is the engine that drives every good story. You cannot have a happy ending without having gone through something--the happy ending would have no meaning or value. As we see modern 'story tellers' try to incorporate the values of today into traditional stories, the process fails time and again for this reason. (eg. why does Rings of Power have no discernable plot?)
Amongst other Disney films we look back on as adults I can name include Bambi, Lilo and Stitch and Fox and the Hound.
As kids we adored Bambi and his ridiculously cute friends Thumper and Flower and found it heartbreaking his mother got killed by a hunter. As adults we learn Bambi has to learn everything his mother taught including walking and eating bark off trees as part of survival. When his father informs him his mother won't be with him again it ends Bambi's childhood and he has to do everything his late mother taught him though his dad looked after him till he was older.
In Lilo and Stitch we found Lilo to be a very queer little girl as kids and wondered why she was depressed and had a hard time with Nani her elder sister. Then as adults we learn their parents died in a car crash and Lilo feeding a fish called Pudge on a Thursday implies that was the day their parents died as well rainy weather, explaining why Lilo thinks by feeding Pudge a peanut butter sandwich it won't rain leading to more deaths and her attacking Myrtle was because the latter unintentionally insulted her. And the death of the parents takes it toll on the two sisters.
In The Fox and Hound we as kids simply thought Tod and Copper were forced to be enemies rather than be friends but as adults we learn that they are supposed to be natural enemies and the reason they go their own ways is not because they don't forgive each other as both are implied to have made up. Instead it is because their friendship simply won't work out and they both accept they have to grow up and go their own paths. But it doesn't stop them from missing each other.
I get what you are saying about the ending of Fox and the Hound but I take the ending differently.
I like to imagine right after Todd rescued Copper and Amos from the bear.
At first Amos is about to shoot at Todd with his gun but then Copper protects him.
It makes Amos think to himself and silently realize that what he and Copper are doing with Todd seeking revenge on him when all along what had happened with Chief and that train was an accident.
Todd saved their lives and is now happily living in the wilderness so Amos now knows that he has to leave him alone.
Copper decides to let Todd go saying his silent farewell to him to indicate to Todd to not worry they will be friends forever but he understands that Todd is happy to be where he is now.
So he lets him go.
Amos could have been now alright if Copper and Todd had a friendship but Copper chose to be a good friend and have Todd live his life happily with Vixie in the wilderness.
After all it’s what true friends do!😇😍

Defending Sleeping Beauty for a moment. Yes, Phillip and Aurora were arranged to wed as children, but would find each other again when they were older (even though Aurora was brought up as Briar Rose). Neither was aware at first that they were one and the same until the fairies told Phillip while he was locked up. So by the time he got to kiss her, he is more that aware who she is (Briar is his intended bride Aurora) and that Aurora/Briar already liked the stranger who happens to be her intended groom (Phillip). So it may come across as “non consensual”, Phillip and the fairies knows that kissing Aurora will revive her.
Plus, Phillip just slayed a dragon-form Maleficent moments before. Lol

I’m not ashamed to say that Dumbo has always made my cry. As a child and an adult.
My favorite Pixar movie of all time is Finding Nemo. It is a love story. The love of a parent for a child. I saw it three times in the theater.

I miss the time I could watch these movies without knowing the real meaning and the issues in them... However I do have to confess I always felt disturbed by Pleasure Island and Mufasa's death always broke my heart from the beginning.
I think pleasure island is a good scare tactic. The world is also a dangerous place. Honor your mother and father. They are to protect you but they can only do so much. We raise children with good morals but kids aren’t perfect and will lie and make bad choices sometimes. Pleasure island is just worse case scenario. A good scare tactic.
I love Pocahontas, it should never be left in the dark! It's such a powerful and emotional, true story, that personally taught me that you should love one another. You shouldn't analyse films like this, it's just a Disney film based on previous fairytales some of them and most are regarding real issues that we should all be aware of 🖤💜
Yeah, well European colonization would proceed to decimate the Native American population by 80%. They would be stripped of their religion, their human rights, their dignity, and their land. But, typical Disney likes to end everything on a positive note though nothing is positive about Europeans colonizing and invading other peoples lands.

I swear, the nuances of Beauty and the Beast are always missed and oversimplified. First off, who had the idea of Belle staying in the castle? Go back and rewatch it, because it's not the Beast. He tries to establish rules, but Belle, fearing her father will die if he stays, exchanges herself for Maurice. Belle doesn't follow any of Beast's rules like when he demands her join him for dinner, she doesn't, when he says she has to stay forever, she does leave after he loses his temper on her in the west wing. She brings him back after he saves her because she's like "he put himself in danger to save me, the decent thing to do would be to bring him back and make sure he's OK". The other thing is she calls him out on his crap, and HE changes for her and makes the effort to restore his own humanity. And when he says she can leave after the ballroom scene, SHE LEAVES. She only goes back because she endangered him to save Maurice from the insane asylum and to return Chip to Mrs.Potts.
1] I hate how so many people try to take away some of these heroines' agency. Belle CHOSE to take her father's place in the castle. She wasn't blackmailed, or otherwise forced into it by any of the other characters. It was HER idea, HER promise. He just held her to it. Granted, he didn't have to be such a jerk about it, but the principle still stands.
2] What Ariel and Cinderella have in common is that independence/freedom from a situation they hated was their shared initial goal, not finding romance. The difference between them is how they handled it. If it hadn't been for that proclamation, Cinderella seemed like she would've been content with only the memory of the ball, and she would've continued on with her life as an abused servant. With Ariel, however, once she laid eyes on Eric, he became the catalyst for all her future plans. He was an easy center-excuse for doing things she'd actually wanted to do for years beforehand.
3] The idea of "Forewarned is forearmed" that troubled Aurora, her parents, and the fairies in "Sleeping Beauty" pops up again in "The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea". Ariel and Eric could've easily kept Melody out of the ocean, if they'd only told her why she was supposed to avoid it. Instead, their mutual attitude of, "I don't need a reason to tell you to do or not do something. Don't question it. Just obey me" gave her greater incentive to rebel. They practically threw her into Morgana's arms. (10/1/2022)
Agree with #1. My daughter literally screamed within the first 5 min. I was in the kitchen & ran into living room thinking she hurt herself. Took forever to calm her down. She's in her mid-20s now I don't think she's ever watched it.
Cinderella never asked for a prince. All she wanted was a night off and a dress.
I Remember as a kid loving Sleeping Beauty the most because Prince Philip actually talked to Aurora. The princes in both Snow White and Cinderella never really talk to them. They just "lived happily ever after."
I put Hamlet and The Lion King together in college and it BLEW my mind. Also, the fact that Belle develops a serious case of Stockholm Syndrome.

That happened to me too. But not in college, in high school. Senior year, I was out due to back surgery involving an abscess on my back, and Harrington rods, that’s too long of a story for me to go into right now. Anyhow, we are task reading, Macbeth, and of course, I couldn’t find the Shakespeare version, so I had to read it strict. You know what that means, the whole 9 yards old English. Thankfully, I was going to a tutor at the time, not because I need help in English, English was one of my best subjects, I’m mostly self-taught it, because my writing style needed help. He probably still does. We found a solution, the previous summer anyway. I tried to read Romeo and Juliet, because once it was hard, and of course, when someone says something is hard, I go, how hard can it be? Turns out Very. So the previous summer this tutor and I have been reading Romeo and Juliet, all loud. I have since learned that any play is to be read for a class that I must find a way to read it aloud, otherwise it will not make sense. It’s because it was meant to be performed. The only time this does not work is if you are reading a screenplay, which I did for the same year, inception was the movie. So anyway, we’re reading Macbeth and we’re reading the part where the rifle kings two sons have to flee the country. And I tell her this sounds a heck of a lot like lion, King, and she responds to me that lion King doesn’t come close to Macbeth, but it does come close to, what it mirrors, is Hamlet. Having never read Hamlet to this day, I can’t verify it directly, but I will take her word for it. AP English. If you must know, I read a lot of interesting things for that class, among them, Frankenstein, and a bunch of other classics I had before then not been exposed to. Thank you, Mrs. current, yes, ENT, except for heart of darkness, that thing was drier than crap.

Her collection of human things are before she met Eric... I think Eric was just the last straw of her being sick of being a mermaid... And it annoys me when people say she did for love.. She already wanted to be human. Her crush on Eric sped up the process. The flaw is thinking that the moment she was drawn to him everything about her instantly ceased to be.
Technically, she sang about being part of “that” world when she was in her grotto. When she met Eric it became part of “your” world. She wasn’t willing to go to a sea witch and get a spell that cost her her beautiful voice and literally ripped her fins into two so she could have legs until after she met Eric.

As a teenager she feels she couldn't trust her dad so with the manipulation of those two eels she felt she could trust Ursula... She wasn't there for Eric, She even had second thoughts in parts of Poor Unfortunate Souls... But Ursula being a master manipulator, manipulates her into wanting Eric.

Cinderella is the quintessential classic Disney movie and no one can dampen that movie for me. It's the ultimate satisfying ending because you know she got some justice on those 3 witches she called "step mother and step sisters"....now pocahontas was a shitty misrepresentation that is def offensive and pinnochio was down right horrifying!
Ever since I watched Hunchback in middle school, it has been my absolute favorite Disney movie. It's themes, characters, and cinematography were so different from other Disney movies that I've seen at the time. I didn't even mind the gargoyles all that much. Plus the Hunchback world in Kingdom Hearts has some spectacular music. Overall, a 10/10 movie 🔔

Courage to leave and go where? Do what? She probably doesn’t know anybody and has a little education since her dad died when she was young and I’m sure her stepmother cut off her education so she can’t be a tutor. Even finding work as a maid somewhere else would be dangerous because she would have absolutely nothing and no one to help her.

I found Ariel signing the contract at Ursula's Lair as a conceptual way to deal with being in the clutches of a bad stranger who's a vicious criminal when you're not comfortable signing a legal document in his/her presence. NOBODY does this to my favorite character.
Aurora didn’t asked to be cursed, and she was saved by someone she knew. It’s not like she was kissed by someone she didn’t know. The Once Upon a dream sequence saved her life. If she had not met Phillip in that way, she wouldn’t have waken up.
Yes, Beast was abusive and didn't care for Belle. But, it took both of them almost dying to get to know each other better. Also, it's Lima Syndrome where the captor falls in love with their captured person. Not the other way around.
As an adult, I realize Snow White didn't do much in the film regarding bravery or heroism. The dwarves offered her protection from the Queen in exchange for house work. Snow White having to look after the cottage while the dwarves go out and do the BIG work in the mines matches the female inferiority sadly common for the time the film was released in. Plus, one prince kiss later and all's well. This negatively implies that women can't function without men. The movie taught nothing beneficial.

Beast never held Belle captive. She offered herself to set her father free, she could have left anytime and she did, only going back because the Beast was injured because of her actions so she nursed him back to health.

You were right to place the hunchback of notre dame at #1 but it’s nothing compared to what happens in the book. This is both my favorite book and Disney movie. I love victor Hugo’s work!
Don’t forget ‘The Incredibles’. Pixar does not shy away from dark action sequences in the film.
The kids think it is a fun family movie.
But the adults see the darker sides in a more nuanced way - and Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl are more appealing to them.

I can still see Beauty and the Beast still having a positive message inside of it despite the fact that in real life we can't trust anybody to imprison us and throw stuff at us when they lose their temper. Lol
Belle doesn’t enable that from the Beast either and people who throw stuff can change if they get the right help and aren’t enabled but still.
But anyways the movie teaches to give help to people with issues even anger management issues especially by sending them to therapy as well as distancing yourself from them and not enabling them.

I'll start off with both Snow White and Sleeping Beauty for I feel like they are both in the same place here.
You know how terribly sick and tired I am of people saying that true love's kiss while someone is sleeping is a non consensual kiss?
That is so far from the truth!
Snow White knows the prince and Aurora knows the prince and they fall in love with the prince!
Sure they just met the prince but it is a fairy tale!
They know that they have a spell cast upon them and that the prince came along to save them the one that they love so in no way is it non consensual!
Isn't that what the spell is all about anyways where with true love's kiss the spell shall break?!
My Mom also told me that there's absolutely nothing wrong with people kissing their dead loved ones on the lips because of how much they miss them! So what the Prince Charming does kissing Snow White in the lips isn't creepy at all!
Snow White can also understand that her beloved prince could have thought that she was gone which was why the kiss happened and she already loves him anyways.
It shows her how much he loves her through and through.
Not to mention but to stick up for the dwarfs here they aren't in love with the princess for they all look at her as their friend. They are just absolutely touched that someone as gorgeous as her and as kind as her actually notices them and sends them out friendly kisses.
The dwarfs are way older than Snow White but there's absolutely nothing wrong with her helping out the men of the house no matter how old she is and for her to act like a mother.
Okay maybe it is weird in a way but again it is a fairy tale so who cares right?
Not to mention but Dopey is the youngest dwarf at the age of eleven so of course he's going to want her kiss on the lips. XD
Now onto The Little Mermaid.
While it is true that as adults we can totally see where King Triton is coming from with Ariel.
I would argue that we can now understand more of what Ariel is going through too.
You know how many teenagers out there in this world feel like they have overbearing families or toxic homes that they want to literally run away with a guy or girl that they just met and run away with them forever never seeing their families again only to regret it later at times realizing how important their families are depending on the situation?
That's how I feel with Ariel.
Keep in mind too that King Triton literally blew up all of her precious human possessions with his triton which would make Ariel feel even more encouraged to get out and never come back.
I can most guarantee that if Ariel had her voice during the film right at the moment when Eric is about to marry Vanessa she would have let out her regrets. In fact, the very scene where she is crying watching the wedding boat go by I feel like she is silently crying for not just Eric but for her family as well fully regretting every action that she took.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if that's what Disney was intending for her to do especially with all of those silent films out there.
Now the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella.
I feel like over the years she had been waiting for the right moment for Cinderella to have her fullest escape which was why she appeared the way that she did and the escape was through Prince Charming so she got her ready to go to the ball.
Now to talk about Pocahontas.
I get the fact that the real life Pocahontas went through hell and she was a child when she actually met John Smith.
Yet I'm sure that up in heaven she's awfully glad to see herself get her own movie and being a legacy Disney Princess among other people and kids. If she were alive she wouldn't like the movie but in heaven she does.
The real Pocahontas would want to be known as a beloved hero among people and live in a fairy tale and that's how I see the Disney movie where she gets exactly that.
Now next thing Peter Pan has absolutely nothing racist in the movie.
Indians sing folk tales all of the time as way to understand how things came to be and that's where What Makes the Red Man Red? song comes from!
Not to mention but while not every person does the same thing out of everybody there are people who do act out that way. Is it okay just to make fun of themselves and not overreact? How is that racist huh?
Peter Pan also learns his lesson in the end about letting Wendy go and letting her grow up and character develops too so cut him some slack. He's just a kid.
As for Dumbo, in real life circuses are bad for animals but I love to imagine in the movie world of Dumbo things eventually got better for the animals in the circus world especially once Dumbo became a famous hero and taught everyone to not judge a book by its cover.
I also saw Finding Nemo for the first time when I was a kid at the age of nine when it first came out and I understood Marlin perfectly well as an overprotective parent and why he acted the way he did. I admit I feel like I understand him even more now that I'm an adult but it still stands I understood him as a kid too if that makes sense.
Now as for Pinnochio what makes this video seriously think that kids actually saw Pleasure Island as fun? We understood that it made them turn into donkeys! Heck when I was a kid I was terrified to get turned into a donkey because of that scene and if I act up badly or go to a wrong amusement park!
I love going to amusement parks but back then even though I loved them I didn’t want to go to the wrong one and turn into a donkey.😅

As for Up, yeah when I used to be my Mom's assistant teacher at a preschool and we played the movie Up for the children.
We always skipped over at the beginning of the movie because it was too much difficult adult stuff for the kids to understand they would get bored easily. XD

As much as it pains me to admit it, I can't enjoy the old Disney films anymore. It's like you said: age ruined them for me. I can no longer look past certain plot holes/problems they have. I think that's why I enjoy watching the live-action remakes so much. They still tell the stories we love but they fix aspects and have modern sensibilities.
How are those kisses non-consensual, when the poor girl has been poisoned to death or to sleep and the only antidote is a Prince's kiss? How can she consent if she's technically in a coma? Is the other option to simply let her rot there until she wakes up on her own and signs the consent form?
I'd rather argue about how a kiss can wake the dead or wake you from a coma!
These kisses are the antidotes to magic spells, and are meant to symbolize the purity of love, devotion, and loyalty. The idea that people are viewing them as sexual assault in 2022 is eye roll inducing.

This really ticks me off. Why can't people realize that these were stories of different times? And the original versions of these stories were 100 times darker? Like in the original tale of Sleeping Beauty. Aurora was raped by her own father while she was asleep and had a child. Cinderellas sisters cut of their own toes to get the glass slipper to fit. Ariel killed herself in her original story. People need to realize the REAL stories behind these movies. If you want to scar kids with these tales, read the the original ones. These versions give kids joy and entertainment. I work at a day care for little kids and we watch these all the time. I want them so see the Disney magic I grew up with and that stories do have happy endings

I'd like to defend the Snow White movie. First of all, I believe the reason the dwarves were obeying Snow White was because she's a princess and you have to obey royalty. Furthermore, they have a crush on her. Also despite being adults, they act like children. Then again, it doesn't feel right that she's telling others what to do in their own house. Perhaps she was worried that they'd get her share of food dirty. Perhaps she was worried their bad habits would spread towards the public. Second, about the age gap, keep in mind that this story is set in a different time period. I will say though I read that she was 7 in the Grimms brothers story but Walt changed her age to 14. Third, the reason the kiss that Snow White got was a goodbye kiss. He doesn't love corpses. He loves Snow White and he wanted to give her a loving send-off and had no idea she'd come back to life. I feel like the general public in the modern age is overlooking that movie.
I consider Hunchback as one of Disney’s best. As a kid, I hated it for how dark it was. As an adult, it’s incredible

Thankfully for most of us, the themes from Snow White and Beauty & the Beast get a bit more fleshed out in Once Upon A Time; ESPECIALLY the former.
Sure, there are one or two moments where birds seem to approach Snow at her behest in OUAT. But she's no damsel in distress; she's an arrow-shooting, smack-talking, butt-kicking heroine in her own right

Snow White you can't really judge by modern standards. I mean it's 85 years old and based on a story significantly older then that. And Princess Aurora feels like the prototype for Princess Zelda. The title character who sits out their own story and is the ultimate prize for the hero to win. Fun in fiction but let us not take it too seriously.

Belle is one of the only Disney princesses who fell in love with someone she actually got to know.
It was said here that she was his prisoner and he mistreated her. I say she was never his prisoner and I ask, when did he mistreat her?
She was never Beast's prisoner. She was a prisoner to her word. She gave her word to stay and could not break it. When she did leave because he yelled at her, he didn't follow her to drag her back. He followed because he knew about the wolves. He protected her. After he was hurt she could have left again but she didn't. She decided to stay.
Beast imprisoning Maurice, justified as well. Maurice was a trespasser who stole food from Beast. Imagine some random old man just walks into your home, invades your refrigerator, and sits his dirty self in your favorite chair. Yes, he deserved to be imprisoned.
So when and how did he mistreat her?? The only times he spoke to or interacted with her before being injured was when they made the deal, when he gave her a tour of the castle and forbade her from the west wing, when he invited her to dinner and was offended by her refusal so he yelled and stomped off, and when he yelled at her when she went to the west wing and touched the rose. All this happened in 1 or 2 days.
First off, he was polite to invite her to dine with him even if it didn't occur to him that she needed space to grieve the lose of he father and freedom. He is use to people doing as he says and it has been 10 years since non-servants have interacted with him. It is understandable that he wouldn't understand how she was feeling and be offended she didn't want to dine with him. Yes, he reacted overdramatically by yelling but remember, his curse stymied his growth as a person.
Additionally, Belle totally deserved to be yelled at in the west wing. She invaded his privacy and touched his stuff without his permission. She had the freedom to go anywhere in the whole castle except the West wing. She purposely invaded his privacy.
Also, what she decided to touch was the only thing in the entire room that was in pristine condition. Belle was smart. She had already figured out that the talking furniture were under a curse. She would have known that there was probably a reason the glowing flower was not broken. She was being nosy. Of course Beast will yell about it. She could have damaged it and his curse could never be broken or, worse, it could have killed them all. He panicked and yelled. I think, in his place, I would have too.
I said all this because I emphatically disagree on their love be wrong or a mistake. She found someone that saw what she was interested in and gave her the freedom to enjoy it. They spoke to each other, got to know each other, respect each other. They probably have one of the healthiest falling in love stories, second only to Anna and Kristoff.
Given that the rose is the symbol that determines how much time Beast has left to break the curse, and that in some tellings of the tail it's actually connected to his own lifespan, yeah, he was in his right to flip out. Further, what people fail to realize is that without the more questionable actions of his character, the strength of Belle's character would not have been able to be seen, and a proper distinction between Beast and Gaston would not have been able to be established.
Does ANYONE - child or adult - not get how Pleasure Island is a hellish place meant to lure kids in with the promise of being able to do whatever they want and then change them into donkeys and sell them? Seriously, I was like seven or eight when I first saw the movie and I got how Pleasure Island is NOT a happy carefree place.

With Finding Nemo, even as a kid I always saw things from both Nemo AND Marlin’s prospects. I related to Nemo cuz as a kid I loved to swim and explore. But at the same time I couldn’t blame Marlin for how he acted because my parents had similar fears for me when I was younger. And the fact that this is one of those movies that only improves with age in every way shape and form(minus maybe it’s animation as I’m sure it’ll look ugly in say 50 years by their standards)only makes me love this movie even more.
