Better than all the other 8-bits generally, better than spectrum, amstrad, c64. It shows the Atari was just ahead of its time and more than a match for all the other 8-bits, superior in many aspects. If Atari had just better sprite size and numbers it just would have wiped the floor completely. Still there are ways around some of the weaknesses as show here and atariblast shows too
But exactly these "bad" sprite sizes made this port look so great. Those chunky oversized sprites (or rather 'players and missiles') are used here as the color 'attributes' (in ULA terms) for various elements, so you have both high resolution (which was monochrome on 8-bit Atari) and multiple colors per line. Truly brilliant work, and I bet Tezz could add some Atari-specific bells and whistles if he decided to make it better than original game (like interrupt-driven color changes triggered by graphics processor, so you'd have screens full of rainbow effects and smooth color transitions). But I'm glad he did it as it is now. Now I have this strong urge to dig out one of my 8-bits and launch this game on a real hardware.
This is an awesome looking port. The Spectrum had amazing music in the game just because it did not have the hardware to do the music, so it took a lot of cool programming. Out of all the ports with music though, this is in my opinion one of, if not the best music.
One thing to know how to do it. The other would be actually doing ir, The ability to utilize hardware within means that seem to defy limits (in this case, creating polyphonic music through a 1-bit buzzer) means nothing if the end result is not properly formed. You really shouldn't blame anything on hardware limitations as that means very little. Especially in regards to those within the demoscene who wish to show off what they can do with their hardware. It's the end result that counts. Technology only defines the limits and querks of what one's working with.
In all honesty, the music is too good. The timing is perfect but I don't remember it being perfect. Didn't it slow down when things got busy? It would be interesting to emulate the slowdown due to the load on the CPU! 😆
Probably the best port I've seen. It's less colorful than the original Spectrum game - the enemy sprites in this version seem to be mostly plain white instead of a variety of different colors - but the screens with colored backdrops are a lot easier on the eye and the music's superb. Nice.
Absolutely awesome ! I am blown away ! I was working towards such things in 1988 when I was burgled and had my atari 800XL stolen :-( See Orb and Dreadnought....
Great job on this game. Was playing it yesterday. My six year old niece loved it too, although she struggled to work out how to use the Atari joystick 😆
what an absolute cracking port this is. Does it feature the change to control in jumping that the C64 received as it's a preferred way to play being a little faster. Anyway thanks for the great conversion
Hi, thanks. I intended for the conversion to be completely accurate to Matthew's original game. I could add the C64 jumping as a selectable feature however :)
@@TezzAtari that's certainly fair enough. It's just something I've gotten quite used to and I'm guessing others too. It would certainly be appreciated if you ever did take the time to do that and a nice little upgrade for Atari users. As it is I'd say this has to be the nicest version to play the game on thanks to the Atari's lovely colour palette. Thanks for the response. All the best
@@TezzAtariYou have made so excellent work that it would be nice from you to make colorized version out of Jet set willy 2007 spectrum remake. This game because of music is one of Atari most remembered games and if you could make it in colorised Hires that would be awesome work. Somebody already made working conversion but forgot to make it colourful.
@@ShadowTenReal Hi, yes a full colour version of Jet Set Willy could be possible although the game would be best to be written again from scratch rather than basing it on XXLs 2007 port. Jet Set Willy has 3 times the number of rooms compared to Manic Miner so the interrupt procedures for the A8 would be quite sizeable. It should still be doable however within stock RAM. I have Rob Hubbards music procedures disassembled including Jet Set Willy so the music presents no problem. Robs procedures are nice and compact as they should be :) I just need a lot of spare time to work on all these games!
Hi, thanks! I release all my Atari game projects for everyone for free. MM is downloadable at most Atari website archives so you can transfer to the real hardware or play under emulation :)
POKEY is killing it, the slight reverb adds to spookiness.

If it had had a better CPU too. It is interesting that he machines that probably had the best video and graphics also had the weakest CPU.
Albert also. Looks like a SMS game.
Absolutely amazing work, to not only port the game perfectly but to get
so much colour in as well is a work of genius! The music is really nice
too.
+Rich Mond Thanks.

This version is great but check out the sam coupe version of Manic Miner...It blows the rest away visually and musically...
The music is ace and gameplay appears authentic to the classic ZX Spectrum game. REALLY IMPRESSIVE :)
+Atari Crypt Thanks, I wanted above all for the game to be authentic to the original

beutiful atari xl/xe catching up these days! nice one

Fantastically faithful recreation. Very fluid and commensurate to the original.
This is unbelievable well done, now do the same with JSW but keep the amazing Atari music, I seen a version lately but it lacked color!
JSW completed! Coming soon :)
I used allways savestats at games very hard where exists this posibility

how its possible in Atari Hires so many colours?
Hi, I'm using carefully timed colour interrupts and hardware sprite overlays to simulate the ZX Spectrum colour map :)

I know it's a homebrew but some guys also release those as hardware as well! :)

pity that you couldn't completed MANIC MINER, but this game is very hard and harder than JET SET WILLY. You might to used SAVESTATS
