I am so happy to see you prospering. Kevin’s shirt says “Support your local farmer.” Please let me encourage you to support your local retailers as much as possible. A store is a brick and mortar farm of inanimate objects. It is tended with as much care as a farm. The people who own and work at the store are your neighbors. I know you enjoy the convenience of Amazon and make money as an affiliate, but think of them as a corporate farm. As a displaced retailer, I see the network of traditional local trade collapsing. I don’t mean to spread guilt, only an awareness of these dynamics. Please follow your own consciences, with prayer and thoughtfulness.

Suggest you set up some fly traps near your cattle and maybe allow some chickens to follow behind the cattle to rid the cow manure of fly larva.

I'm so glad you guys got "American Bresse" and are sharing your journey. For years, I have known that they are dual purpose, produce a fairly high number of eggs, and are considered to have the best tasting meat among chicken varieties, so the Bresse have been top on my dream farm list. Today I learned that the Bresse grow a little faster than other varieties (I know Cornish cross are basically the fastest growers but they can't be bred and self sustained on a farm) and the Bresse start producing eggs a month or more faster than other varieties. The Bresse just keep getting better as I learn about them! Thank you! :-)

I bought a dump truck of the best soil in my area for raised beds. The guys who delivered it kept showing me how fluffy it was. It was nice. After a season it settled. Nice yards I'd paid for had included a lot of air. Another thing I've found, that Kevin and Sarah have also experienced, is the top quality soil was lacking in nutrients. I thought it would be fabulous. I'm taking this year to build that soil with my compost. Cheers all!

I was able to get some American Bresse chickens from Bresse Farms about 3 weeks ago. I'm so impressed by how fast they're growing! I have them in with some Polishes, Americaunas, Wyandottes, and one week younger Buff Brahmas. The white bresse are growing faster than the black and blue bresse that I got from the same place. I think I might have 2 white rooster out of 7 white bresse chicks. This year's will be my breeding stock and next year I'll be hatching eggs from them. So excited!

Great you found the Bresse chickens. With all the avian flu going around, having your own breeding stock will be great. I bought a Meyer Lemon and a satsuma last fall and put into pots. Lost mine in the ground during the Texas Deep Freeze. They were fairly new to being planted. This year, these will go into the ground. Planning on building PVC pipe frames to go over them with Christmas lights for heat next winter. They can actually take brief periods below freezing.

With a little ingenuity, you could easily turn your salt tubs into self-watering pots. There are a couple of young men that brought life to the Global Bucket concept on UA-cam. That is where I got my start with them. Since then I have modified my 10 and 20-gallon pots into self-watering planters. For larger plants and trees this works amazingly well.

    • @CarolReidCA
      @CarolReidCA 2 роки тому

Do you have a video of how you do it? I know a couple of ways, but it's always good to see how others do it.
I would put them up higher than the plants, to gravity feed the plants, then add a garden timer manifold to a male host coupling on the water container, then run spray or drip lines off the manifold. The timer will turn the water on and off. You can get a timer watering manifold with 4 outlets for about $75 on Amazon. (They used yo be about $40, but with inflation they've gone up a lot), and the manifold will generally last for years.
      Great idea!
For small gardens, even a 5 gallon bucket used for watering with a drip line can be a big help.

Kevin and Sarah, thank you SO MUCH for your American Bresse video. I had recently made the same decision about breaking from the ‘beholden to a hatchery’ system, and had chosen American Bresse as a Cornish Cross replacement, but couldn’t find any. As it turns out, Northstar Farm is located in my state, so we made the 2.5 hour road trip last week and picked up our breeding flock! IT WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED if you could publish a video describing your BREEDING PROGRAM. That process seems rather confusing and complicated. I appreciate ALL of your videos…you taught me how to render my own lard from my first pigs last year, Sarah!! Very exciting! Y’all are a blessing to the Homesteading Community!!

Have you considered growing figs? They should do very well in your greenhouse, and will probably do well outside. This is a major food crop. They are easy to grow, the bugs for the most part don't bother them, every variety has a different flavor, they are easy to propagate and could be a cash crop for your farmers market. They are easy to propagate from cuttings taken in the fall and start bearing useable fruit the second or third year.

First time to have chickens. I was all set to get Cornish Cross for meat. After I saw you changed I started shopping for them. Ack! None local or at the hatchery you recommended. So I will be buying locally. Bresse is available and I won’t have to get a minimum thats more that my limit of 15 (per the city). I can’t have a rooster so being completely self-sufficient is out unless I can take my girls out for dinner and stud service.
Watching you cut up the Bresse breast was awesome. It reminded me when I buy chicken I prefer the longer thinner breasts over the ones that are extremely thick on the end, so thanks for that!
I think we will enjoy Bresse. Especially since it’s known as the best tasting chicken in the world! 😋

Hey guys saw you two on a random add in face book today someone was trying to sell the planting square you use and there you both were busy as little beavers planting up your raised bed in your green house on the original homestead

I love watching your UA-cam channel. We bought American Bresse chickens after watching the first video you posted on UA-cam about them. We are very excited to getthem at the 1st of May. I was wondering what chicken feed you are using? From what I understand you shouldn't feed them just any type of feed. Thank you for all you do to share your knowledge!

Baby calf is saying more milk please. Do you give the nursing moms extra food to help them produce more milk? Looks like the grass is ready to be reseeded. Maybe throw in some extra goodies like spinach or other greens in shadier areas? Just a thought. Glad to hear you’re doing so well at the farmer’s market! I’d love to see a video of that and see what all else you’re selling lol. Yes, buy local!👍🏻

Add peat moss or coco coir to your containers to make soil much more friable.

Looking great! WTG guys! Spring is definitely here! I'd stay aware of the bird flu, and your bio-security on the farm. Shoes & pants can be a transmission point of bird flu, so might want to keep shoes & pants you wear around the farm on the farm, and shoes you wear off the farm away from your farm shoes/boots.
This is something everyone should be aware of. I knew a guy who worked with quarantined imported pet birds, and between servicing different bird cages, they kept a pan of 10% bleach solutions that they stepped in for 5-10 minutes before going to the next cage, and they also washed their hands between cages with soap. It slowed things down, but doing so reduced transmission of diseases. They also didn't travel to other places with birds, and would set off fire crackers if they saw wild migrating birds around the farm, to discourage them from hanging around. Biosecurity with birds especially now, is something we all need to think about, and keeping separate shoes/boots worn off the farm seperate, and washing clothes you've worn off the farm before wearing them on the farm only takes a few minutes a day, yet could spare an entire flock from disease.
You may already do this, but for the benefit of others as well. Your Agricultural extension through your local university may have additional measures everyone can take to work together to reduce spread of bird flu and other pathogens.
Quarantining any new eggs and/or birds, and any birds that show signs of illness is essential as well.
Anyhow, great to see you guys doing so well! Those tomato plants look great! I planted a couple Romas and Serrano chilies the other day here in California. They look like they are already digging their roots into the garden soil. We planted seeds directly too. Lotsa basil! It's hard work, but pays off in a few weeks.
    Loving spring!

I saw flies on the calves. I really don't know much on what to do for flies, it's just that Jason from Cog Hill Farm put something on his cow Moody and he said he is not seeing any flies. Might be worth checking out. May be something you wouldn't want
